Yeah but you said it was a "dodgy" goal. I would say it was a very well taken goal. A sublime pass by Clifford and excellent thinking by Geaney before dispatching his shot to the net..

Yes great pass from Clifford. Not so sure about Larry Bird's finish :)

Larry Bird was a brilliant basketballer and I saw many of his scores on tv but Not once did I see him kick a ball into the net,

You may have seen him take more than one hop though Mick. :)

"Might" and "dodgy", bottom line both keepers were beaten once in the game, neither goal was down to keeper error. Both keepers were otherwise excellent as regards goal-line duties. Cluxton found blue with all his restarts, Ryan found blue with three of his. Cluxton scored two long range place-kicks. So take it from there.

It doesn't matter whether a save resulted in a game being won or lost, the keeper doesn't know that at the time. It's the ability, agility and positioning to make that save in the first place that counts. Cluxton made 2 or 3 top class reflex saves this year in the championship (don't know whether they made TSG for those who were not there in person), his distribution has been flawless and he scored 2 pressure points in the AI final in greasy conditions. If Ryan can top that then Ryan should get the nod but I don't know if he did because I only saw glimpses of him on TSG. That's the problem with these awards, probably not enough evidence to fully support them, just opinion.

My arguement has nothing to do with Cluxton. Cluxton is class. Always was. My point is Geaney s goal was legit and a very good goal.

Yeah but once he did nt catch it before he flicked it up then it's perfect. All referees say so. Class goal. Oh I've seen foul double hops alright in AI finals lol but not by Geaney.

You'd be used to players fouling the ball to be fair.

Ryan made some super saves this year but I have no prob whatsoever if Cluxton gets All star. I don't agree with all the stats though as from one restart Cluxton kicked it out to midfield in first half and the first person to touch the ball was Kerry s Diarmuid Ó Connor who punched the ball away hard and a Dublin player gathered it. Now that goes down as a kickout won for Dublin but in truth Cluxton did nt know a Dub would get it as he kicked it towards Diarmuid and Diarmuid was first to the ball. Likewise Shane Ryan kicked a ball and Fenton punched it away but again a Dub player got it so it went as Ryan losing kickout. Also in some games the pundits are talking about keepers finding me at back. In alot of games the kickouts are not contested at all and even I could kick it to my corner back. In the provincial championships I saw games where no one pushed up and contested ko s.

Yes indeed Mick. Bounce is hand to ground to hand. It stopped being a bounce when he put his foot to the ball. Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 1955 - 09/08/2023 19:44:03 2499802 Link 1 |

As you say kick-out stats are based on possession and not on first touch, and rightly so. The kick-out strategy involves more than the keeper and the intended receiver. Because an opposition player gets a first touch or punch to the ball doesn't mean the strategy has failed. If the opposition come away with possession then the kick-out strategy has failed and of course there may be some luck involved, it is a ball game. But the stat is correct, three of Shane Ryan's kick-outs failed in retaining possession for Kerry.

Spot on. Stevo with 100% kick out success rate and 2pts scored in the biggest day of the year. Enough said imo. We wont even go into the self-preservation/assault by the other fella v Derry - if it was a rugby game it was, a red card all day long... Knew exactly what he was doing. Could have a target on his head for next season v Derry ;o) Joking of course. Cherry picking aspects or stats of a losing final and re-watching it over and over again - wouldnt be my way of dealing with that defeat tbh. We can all start going through the good aspects of certain of our players in the final, but from a losers pov, does it actually make the loss feel any easier.? I am not sure Stevo's performance in the final and the lack of goals conceded by him before the final, will be enough to get him the All Star. I actually think an outfield Dublin player might get one instead of him. Similarly the POTY award going to Jamesie - not so sure he will actually get it. But really, does it matter - who have the All Ireland medals this year - that is the main thing. Many players has received All Stars when other were perhaps more deserving of them. Very rarely everyone will agree on them. Similarly for the team of the year and even POTY. It can be good for debate etc but I wouldnt be losing sleep over it and continually trying to prove a point - be it positive or negative, depending on your team of preference. What will be, will be.... ;o) Fionn (Dublin) - Posts: 3980 - 10/08/2023 14:18:27 2499895 Link 0 |
