That question hardly needs an answer? All I'm saying, have said, in any individual year whoever gets the "opinion trinkets" , there will be different opinions, the real currency is the Celtic Cross, and in fairness to you this probably applies more to serial winners like Dublin and Kerry and more more lately Tyrone. I can understand why "other counties" could get orgasmic with a poty award. I personally have no issues with window dressing awards or their recipients. Team game man, team game!

You said there were issues yet refuse to say what those issues were. This topic has nothing to do with All-Ireland medals so I don't know why you keep bringing that up.

Again, not obsessed with anything. Just saying that with somebody like yourself who is so obsessed with the Dubs and Dublin posters, the POTY award doesn't mean much having already won the main prize. It's just opinion led window dressing. I've said on other posts that perhaps Clifford should win it but like most posters I suspect, I'm closer to the performances of my own county's players having been to all their games. I've seen snippets of other players on TSG but not enough to be able to gauge a year's performance level.

Again why are you bringing up winning the All-Ireland when it has nothing to do with this topic? So I'll ask again what were the issues with the Mayo players winning POTY? Because again you're the one who said there were issues but all you've done is try to change the subject when asked what those issues were. oneoff (UK) - Posts: 1472 - 06/08/2023 19:49:30 2499285 Link 0 |
I could have issues with Clifford being given an award because he ultimately failed to deliver on the big day. I could have issues with Cluxton being given an award because he didn't play in the league. Look I don't care who gets the award, and maybe I'm wrong but I'd say the three being mentioned Clifford, Cluxton or McCarthy don't give a damn either, the prize has been won. Over and out.

So winning an All Ireland has nothing to do with this topic!! Bizarre.

Does a player have to have won an All-Ireland in order to win either an All Star or POTY?

Cluxton won it in 2019. Didn't deserve that year or this year !

They give it to cluxton in 2019 just because he was going to retire.

Maybe Cluxton's going to retire again and will get it.!

And they're now throwing him into the FOTY conversation even though he shouldn't be anywhere near it - just to keep the raised eyebrows to a minimum when he gets the all star. (They don't want to leave 1 of the 3 9-time winners out). Before the final, the top 3 keepers had been Ryan, Beggan and Lynch. Cluxton had a decent final. No more than that. 2 good frees, and hit his unmarked man each time with his kickout. Poor for Geaney's goal. I would say it was enough to get him a nomination ahead of Lynch, but no more than that. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5194 - 07/08/2023 12:29:58 2499362 Link 2 |
After starting this thread, (post 1) I have read very little in the 147 posts on this thread and the very repetitive, and often biased/boring 565 posts on the 2023 Dublin v Kerry thread to enlighted me and make me change my mind. letsgetgoing (Roscommon) - Posts: 633 - 07/08/2023 12:42:22 2499364 Link 1 |
He didn't say he he was retiring in 2019, he didn't retire in 2019 and indeed he didn't retire since 2019.

No, but the fact that close to 50% of all-stars are "given" to the current All Ireland winners in any given year would indicate that it has something to do with it and the % of recipients of potys from current all Ireland winners even higher. Had to think about it but yes, you know what, I think there just maybe a connection between winning Sam and these "opinion awards"

It sure helps though.

Here is a stat: For the 28years of POTY, only 5 times has the winner come from a non All Ireland winning team. 1995 the great Peter Canavan 2003 Steven McDonnell 2010 Bernard Brogan 2016 Lee Keegan 2017 Andy Moran Fionn (Dublin) - Posts: 3980 - 07/08/2023 19:12:58 2499411 Link 2 |
Had Geaney not over hopped the ball Cluxton would have smothered it. Look at it again. Scoring 2 pressure points and hitting a free man with every kick-out is not an average game for a goalkeeper. Cluxton and Beggan are the two best keepers in the country. The fact that the dodgy Geaney goal was the only one he conceded this year behind what many considered a poor Dublin defence this year, says something for his performances. Some great close range reflex saves this year, excellent under the high ball bar one drop, unparalleled kick out accuracy and 2 points in an AI final. He's still no. 1 and the GOAT in that position.

Colm Ó Rourke got poty in 91 as losing finalist. Twice poty was given to a player that never got to the final. Bernard Brogan (Dublin) 2010 and the best one was 1974 Kevin Heffernan (Dublin) got poty and he did nt play at all in the championship. Other trivia on poty. Only two players won it two years in a row Jimmy Keaveney (Dublin) and Jacko Shea (Kerry). Jacko Shea won poty two years in a row twice (winning poty 4 times). Only 2 sets of brothers have won poty. Alan and Bernard Brogan (Dublin) and Tomás and Marc Ó Sé (Kerry). CiarraiMick (Dublin) - Posts: 3844 - 07/08/2023 21:39:55 2499437 Link 1 |
Where did I say that there were issues with Mayo players? Winning the AI has everything to do with it as you keep saying that Dublin supporters are upset about POTY. How could we be upset when we've won the only prize that matters? You seem to be the only one who gives a fiddlers about POTY.
