Replying To MesAmis:  "Very hard to pick a FOTY this year. No stand out candidate for me, Brendan Rogers maybe?

There is a weird push in the media and online for it to be Cliffford. Seems really odd to me, bordering on disrespectful of the fella if I'm honest."
Why?

52 championship games since 2014, no game lost, some man Stevo"
Can't get man off the match for kicking 25 placed balls. Nike have robots doing the same job testing boots. Ryan done more during the match including coming out for balls and getting the head took of him.

I think that's a good call but POTY is seldom given to a non Final competitor… I would love to see Rodgers get it as he was brilliant in all games but I'd say Mc Carthy will get it…. Not his best season but was overlooked a couple of times when lesser influential Dubs picked it up… a real warrior

He shared his opinion. Don't see why he should have to apologise for it. Same as the rest of the talking heads, other than most of them just say what they think is popular about anything under the sun. Then take the opposite view if that changes.

Clifford surely the standout candidate for POTY. Was nailed on if Kerry got over the line on Sunday. He really carried them when they needed him this year and produced some magic only he is capable of doing.

Closest for me then would be McCarthy, what an absolute animal of a player and a true GAA legend.

For TOTY, Monaghan will surely feel hard done by if they don't get one or two in?

Ryan might have come out with a few balls but who had the most influence on the game every one of cluxtons kick outs found one of his team mates something Ryan didn't do

As I say I'm bias but player of the year for me is David Clifford. A few times finalists have got it like Lee Keegan and Andy Moran. The facts are before the all ireland final Clifford was hot favourite to win poty with Paddypower at 4/7 on. Mccarthy was 9/4.Now for Mccarthy to trump Clifford he d have to get motm and Clifford would probably have to be held scoreless. In truth both played well below par in the final. James also lucky to not be sent off. Clifford while underperfirming scored 3 points brilliantly set up the Kerry goal and created other scores. Of course I'm biased but common sense says Clifford for me.

McManus major is surely deserving of a shout. Crucial to win over Armagh and titanic display against Dublin when most thought he wouldn't last the 70+ and would only be sprung late.

Replying To Pope_Benedict:  "Just mention Jack McCaffrey, and it underlines the difficulty of selecting all-stars these times. You pick six 'all-star' defenders carefully for 2023, based solely on 'body of work' since January. Then you step back and realise that you'd pick McCaffrey ahead of every one of them if you could, and the same McCaffrey has just won a 2023 all-ireland medal in a tactical bench role. Could kind of make a similar point about Ciaran Kilkenny 2023 and forward selections too, but McCaffrey is still a major thorn for oppositions, and strangely that seems to be getting more noticeable the less he plays."
Unfortunately Jack probably did nt play enough to get an all star. If I was picking the best team in the country yes I would have Jack pencilled in straigh away at number 7 but due to injuries etc he did nt play enough but def was a big factor on Dubs all ireland win. Another player I admire and a gentleman to go with it. A likeable person.

As you know yourself Mick common sense within the GAA is not that common…. Clifford who was a good bit below his high standards in the Final was still miles ahead of McCarthy on the day who as you rightly say was lucky not to see red but for an incompetent ref…. If Clifford was hot favourite before the Final nothing happened on the day to put McCarthy ahead of him….simple

Its very easy pick footballer of the year. The problem with us all is that we suffer a recency problem and we tend to place too much weight on more recent performances e.g. Al Ireland final.
David Clifford had a poor performance by his standards in the AI. Note the "by his standard" . In this game he scored 2 outrageously good points from play ( one from either foot) , worked some magic to create the goal , and pretty much won every ball kicked in to him. He was very tightly marked by a very good player and that certainly contributed to him shooting some wides that he would normally score.
But look back on the other games. Balanced over the year he was unquestionably ( I honestly cant believe anyone is questioning this) the player of the year.

Yeah I'd agree. James pulled Dublin through a couple of games but Clifford had an excellent year up until the final. They'd be a much lesser force without him. I think James being the captain of the winning team and leaving behind such a legacy, if he does step down, probably influenced the decision. Had Costello had a hot day then I would have fancied him as he has been superb this year but Clifford had been consistent also up until the final and has had big days this year, his 8 against Mayo although they were beaten, stands out.

I only saw Kerry play Cork, Mayo, Tyrone, Derry and Dublin this year.

I don't think Clifford was at FOTY standard over those games.

I think giving him the award because he's such a talent even when he doesn't deliver is a little disrespectful to him to be honest.

Fair enough Mesamis but he was man of the match in a few games and in munster final which you did nt see he got 2-6.Of course you don't get the award on talent but genuinely I believe he was the best player over the year. As I've stated the bookies had him red hot favourite before final. The closest to him was James ie. Did he do enough in final to overtake him. I'd say no! If Mannion had been in the running then I could understand Mannion pipping him. Cluxton did nt even play in the league and did nt play early championship. If Clifford was the best before the final for poty I can't see how he could be surpassed by James ie who did nt have a good final and Clifford who was below par still contributed so much But sure we all see things different and no problem with that.

What's to explain?
Ryan has been the outstanding player in his position.
He's kicked points from play, got involved in Kerry attacks, made a crucial save against Derry and saved a point on Sunday. Didn't fluff and high balls - Cluxton's one v Monaghan was like something you'd see at junior b level

Maybe nobody deserves the award this year but somebody is going to get it. James McCarthy was unbelievably poor last Sunday for such a good player.

I'd have no issue with him getting it, but it's a bit of stretch to call his two points in the final 'outrageously' good. They're the type of points you see scored in almost every game. He has scored some genuinely outrageous points, but they weren't two of them.
There is a tendency to overblow anything good done by brilliant players, because they've done some amazing things. It happens in every sport.
He did kick 5 wides in the final, which is a lot and most of them were at the most crucial stage of the game. He also dropped another one well short.
He had a similar outing against Tyrone, where a lot of his kicks were off target.
He was excellent against Derry, particularly in the 1st half.
His scoring in the routs of Clare and Louth were impressive, but it's not on such games that players of the year are judged.
He's certainly deserving of it, but it's far from unquestionable as you're suggesting.
