Hurling Relegation Playoff

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

The last placed team in leinster (probably Wexford) should play Waterford (last in munster) in a relegation playoff for fairness. At least Wexford won a championship match this year. So what if Waterford get relegated.

There would be 4 munster and 7 Leinster next year but move a team into munster until Waterford or Kerry gain promotion back to munster.

It's not unprecedented for counties to play in other provinces. For instance last week, Galway, a connacht county played Antrim, an ulster county in the Leinster championship!

I heard someone else suggest this. Not sure how serious a prospect it is as they are hardly going to change the format at the last minute. Anyway, i am coming increasingly to believe that Wexford will win tomorrow.

Munster and Leinster are guaranteed 5 teams. The McDonagh winner determines the province with 6 teams. Munster has less threat of relegation but Leinster is less competitive. On balance there is fairness. The two teams missing out in Munster are arguably stronger than the third team in the Leinster championship.

Good idea. if Waterford get relegated, move Galway into Munster. Then again, Kilkenny could move into Munster, just for the craic. That would put the cat among the pigeons (pun intended)

What evidence is there to suggest that Waterford are better than Dublin at the moment? Only form over last 5/6 years has been league and it's been pretty much evens. Indeed three draws that i can recall and one or two narrow wins either way.

It would certainly not be unfair to have a relegation payoff between the two provinces.

Move two from Munster to Leinster and vice versa or else move the lot to Connacht! lol

How do you reckon that? In the last completed round robin last year Clare drew with Limerick twice over 70 minutes, cruised to victory over Tipp and Cork, and their 2nd string hammered Waterford, while it took them an almighty effort to pip us at the last in the AIQF after trailing most of the game, after we finished 3rd in Leinster. Cork struggled to put away Antrim til the last 10 minutes also.

The supposed jewel in the GAA crown of the Munster hurling championship winds me up. No relegation even when teams fail to win a game like Tipp last year. At a minimum a sense of jeopardy should prevail, Waterford have been atrocious this year, yet will still be there next year in their never ending bid to win an All Ireland. They haven't won a Munster title since 2010. Wexford have only lost 6 games out of the last 21 in Leinster yet facing relegation. Absolute joke.

I was going to say that. Like every Munster county, Waterford seem to think being a Munster county makes you better than any other county.
If Dublin were playing Waterford tomorrow, I would have no fear for it. They are a decent crop of players but poorly managed side.
But the cracks and obvious deficiencies in this system are all on show out this year. A terrible 5th team in Munster but 4 good teams, 2 Leinster teams a bit ahead of the others (and the tiresome moaning from Munster about how easy Kilkenny and Galway have it) and a Wexford team having a really bad year facing relegation in the face yet Waterford might not win a game and through a farcical structure don't face any such risk?
Crazy structure all round. Time for a review with a view to improving the game and its structure for everybody, not just the few.

2 Leinster teams not even in the Leinster championship gave us every bit as much entertainment as any Munster match today at Croke Park. There is no evidence whatsoever to suggest Waterford is better than Dublin so let them rattle on.Leinster has let Galway and Antrim in at Laois,Offaly,Carlow and Westmeaths expense over the years while they wont even let Kerry get a crack at Waterford.

Currently Waterford are not that far ahead of Kerry, Carlow and Offaly and I'd definitely fancy Dublin to beat them.

And Clare got their arses handed to them in Croke park last year by a Kilkenny team not even going at full tilt.

Ah now, there's definitely a gap from Waterford to Kerry. Laois, Offaly and whoever drops from Leinster will be the favourites for the top 3 next year.

In fairness Munster is miles ahead of Leinster, and I do think if Waterford was in Leinster they would come out in the top 3. You can't compare but Leinster is alot easier and as a Galway man i know well that we are lucky to be in Leinster!

The rules are the rules, if Wexford get relegated today it's on Wexford, can't change rules half way through a championship.

But structures do need to change.

No one cares about the league, it's become a glorified series of practice matches, forget it.

Run off the championships on a knockout/semi knockout basis to determine the provincial champions and then mix and match Leinster and Munster teams in a super 10/12 team Liam Mac all,Ireland series.

They really struggled to beat Laois in 2021 in Championship.

Clare beat Cork by 2 points hardly cruising to victory. It is also a fair statement to say that Cork or Limerick are better than Dublin. You're finding all these isolated examples to try and prove your points, what exactly have Dublin done in the past few years or this year to indicate that they are better than Limerick (haha) or Cork? The Munster championship isn't always stronger than Leinster, it wasn't last year but it definitely is this year and only the most biased of Leinster hurling fans can deny this.

Waterford also aren't as bad as everyone here are making out and they would beat Kerry/Kildare/Down with a bit to spare. The original post was right in saying that there should be a relegation playoff vs last in each province.
