1st is in last 8,and then the 4 runner ups play the 4 3rd place teams,then eventually it's down to the last 8

The second placed teams will be drawn to play against the third placed teams in preliminary quarter finals. The winners of the groups go straight through to the quarter finals. They will be drawn against the winners of the preliminary quarter finals.

Teams finishing second and third first play off in the "preliminary quarter-finals" - a grand term that only ever seems to be used in the GAA and not in any other sporting organisation.

Winners of these four matches then go into the quarter-finals proper with the four group winners.

Same applies in Tailteann Cup.

the 4 teams who finish top go into quarter finals

then there is provisional quarters where the 2nd place team in a group would play the 3rd in another group

The four preliminary quarter-finals will consist of the second placed teams being at home to third place teams, subject to avoiding of repeat provincial final pairings and where possible repeat pairings from Round One

Mayo v Cork, Galway v Armagh/Derry, Roscommon v Kildare and Derry/Armagh v Clare are the group games from every group that could be staged in Croke Park. Players want to play in Croke Park. Let them play there!

Kerry v Louth, Tullamore/Portlaoise
Tyrone v Westmeath, Cavan/Clones
Dublin v Sligo, Cavan/Clones
Monaghan v Donegal, Cavan

Someone told me that they were sitting behind two priests in the Hogan Stand last Sunday, and one of them whispered to the other that the Leinster Council was going to "get Ryan" and that when Kildare were beaten by Dublin and put into the same group - which had all been settled BEFORE the ball was thrown in, by certain parties - that Kildare would be forced to nominate Farrell's own ground in Na Fianna on Mobhi Road as Kildare's home ground.

And that Dublin would get 2 penalties and win by 13 points, having led by 5 at half time. Sure, there's no point in any team trying to compete with that, lads.

Not sure I agree with that tbh.
The 4 teams who lose the preliminary quarter finals should by right be allowed to play off against one another, in Croke park preferably,( the more empty seats the better), with the two winning teams playing each other for a place in the semi finals of the Tailteann cup.

This fad of playing in CP is a nonsense. For example, FA Cup first or second round games aren't played at Wembley are they?

Last year's move by the CCCC to try and cash in on the "everyone wants Croke Park" belief backfired with less than 15k at the Ros/Clare and Mayo/Kildare double header.
They were knock out games. Group games especially if they're only sorting out 2nd/3rds won't fill many of the 82,300 spaces in Croke Park.

whatever about giving the dubs an advantage, there is far more merit in playing these at smaller provincial venues with a packed house and better atmosphere. If croke isn't near capacity on match days it is like a morgue.

worst thing about double headers is during the second game there is so much shuffling out. people from the first game wait for a bit of the second and then leave. stand up sit down etc etc.

then there is large empty spaces.

even if the attendance for both games waited for everything, it is still a cavernous atmosphere.

at the Tailteann Cup level and below players dont get much opportunity to play at CP but the guys playing in the group stages get plenty of opportunity without forcing a game in their that has no business being there.

A bit off topic but anyone heading to Croke Park for matches can get, fairly, reasonably priced accomataion at the college campus in Maynooth.

I'm not for the neutral venue, I think the provincial winner should get the two home games, the only advantage of winning your province is top seed

It didn't make sense last year and was unfair on supporters from Clare and Roscommon. But I think I remember Colm Collins saying afterwards that he put it to his players and they wanted the match to be on in Croke Park. Suppose they wanted to play there. So that's fair when they're the ones slogging since last autumn or winter.
