Derry made a game of it in the second half. Meath won by 2 points. Three close finals today. Meath back in the McDonagh at their first attempt.

Apparently this is true. I found it hard to believe but apart from some national league finals (which are not normally in Croke Park) and a junior championship in the 1930's there has been very little national success for Monaghan in hurling (, one could say football also)…

Monaghan senior hurlers played Derry in NHL Division 3 final in Croke Park in 1982.
