I don't think a straight final helps the McDonagh. Possibly a 2nd v 3rd final can be a good fit. The crowds are low though to be fair. Laois had a great crowd against Dublin years ago but that support isn't holding. To see a crowd like that for a Carlow v Laois semi-final would be a good starting point. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 8773 - 10/05/2023 10:35:23 2477224 Link 0 |
Okay but why should get more coverage if people within those counties are not turning up.

I'd say Offaly will get a crowd if they get far. They had a massive crowd at the minor Leinster final, all Ireland semi and final the other year.

Agree but a lot of the fault lies with the GAA. You only have to look at promotion of of Football B championship V Hurling B Championship. GAA put much more effort into football promotion and that is reflected in both attendances and coverage of games outside the the top 10 in both codes.

The way to generate interest in the competition is to televise it. I don't think people in their own counties know how good hurlers like Marty Kavanagh, Shane Conway, Paddy Purcell are. Would love to see TG4 cover all the games. carlovia (None) - Posts: 1536 - 11/05/2023 10:35:41 2477516 Link 1 |
Well said, the gaa are at fault. They haven't managed proper promotion of hurling in nearly 150 years of existence.

More teams in the B football championship though. I think the hurling champ would be much better and easier to promote if it were 3 tiers of 12 but then I suppose the lack of quality comes into play.

Great to see Carlow in final Blackbog (Carlow) - Posts: 755 - 13/05/2023 19:21:30 2478111 Link 0 |
Down result no real surprise - should a hit 3-30+ last week again Carlow & prob targeted the one game to stay up. Best two teams in final. Should be a cracker.

Is the Joe Mc Donagh final a stand alone fixture in Croke Park on 28th May Blackbog (Carlow) - Posts: 755 - 13/05/2023 20:07:06 2478127 Link 0 |
Mmmm. I don't think there will be much fellow feeling across in Queen's County this evening. Offaly of course well entitled to rest players given the schedule they are on in senior and 20s, but it is indicative of what can happen in the final round. Might yet be a factor in other round robins too .... BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3506 - 13/05/2023 20:33:32 2478141 Link 0 |
Dublin v Galway hurling and possibly Dublin v Ros football on there that day.

Curtain raiser to the U20 final this year. The finalists will have three weeks to get ready for the preliminary quarter-finals. Teams can celebrate and recover for a week after the final before possibly using two weeks to prepare for a free hit.

What would hapyig Offaly were in both matches? Wouldn't be ideal. I'm sure the big-wigs thought a Joe McDonagh county wouldn't make an u20 final

Offaly really screwed a good Laois team over. Laois should have really beaten Carlow on that day I suppose. It'll be a tough division next year with Westmeath and Laois. skirge7 (UK) - Posts: 254 - 14/05/2023 09:41:49 2478235 Link 0 |
It is not Offaly's job to get Laois to a final in fairness! They were perfectly entitled to pick whatever team they chose, especially given the amount of games they've played in short period and the cross over with the under 20s. It does, however, point to a flaw in round robins that will have collateral damage. Same possibly will happen in final round of Leinster senior and is almost a certainty in the football groups, where it is not beyond bounds of possibility that qualified teams will be able to avoid others if they were so inclined. On what grounds do you assume a fully strength Offaly would have beaten Carlow? Who were unbeaten coming into the game, and beat Offaly (by five points) last year? And if Leix are 'really good' why didn't they beat Carlow? They had their chance. CARPS (Carlow) - Posts: 853 - 14/05/2023 11:17:39 2478252 Link 2 |
Good point.
