Big Away Support

Replying To endgame:  "I'd say about 10,000 in The Hyde last Sunday. Probably around 3,000 Armagh supporters which is great away support for a League game in February."
3000 out of a population of 175,000 in Armagh county so 1.7% of the county. If Leitrim brought 700 fans for an away trip (which we easily would do) from a population of 35,000 that's 2% of the county. Won't hear anything about the massive away support for Leitrim though.

As they shay there is three kinds of lies- Lies, damn lies and statistics!!

Are u16s counted in attendance? We've seen massive crowds at the league games so far but many fans including our own and even looking around at the grounds it appears the official attendances while great for league look to be below what's actually in the grounds….looked to be more than 12k in MacHale Park last night.

I'm not sure about under 16s being included..I do know there used be a separate gate for them in limerick, which I always took to mean they weren't counted..Tralee looked packed last night but 11,000 looked small..crowds attending matches is unbelievable and as latter rounds take place I think support may fall off..

U16 are counted. They walk in without a ticket. Attendance figures are tickets sold.

In fairness to Leitrim supporters there were a good few travelled down to Wexford and that's probably as far as a Leitrim man can go and still be on the island of Ireland.

I think you need to reassess your figures - there's a fairly sizeable non-GAA fraternity in all of the forgotten counties.

U 16s should have a ticket even if it's free. Health and safety comes first for supporters.

175,000 - well a good proportion are from the other side - only big town with a sizeable nationalist population is Newry ( and it's half in Down) , Armagh is small while lurgan and portadown have large number of unionists

Very big crowds at many GAA matchs recently in both HUrling & Football, i think Limerick v Cork 19,500 has been the largest crowd to date but theres a lot of greater than 10K attendances at different matchs, most grounds dont count under 16s so official attendances are an underestimation of the number of people there. PUC & Croke Park are 2 of the few that count everyone.
Its amazing to hear the League of Ireland & Papers crowing about big crowds at matchs 4/5K whereas National League numbers are far greater not to mind the Championship crowds.

Are the League of Ireland and papers crowing about the size of crowds for League of Ireland games? They've a very low pool of supporters.

Yes but the flip side is you are one of a number of counties who in reality focus on one code only. While some strides have been made with hurling in Armagh the gaa support in fairness is not really split like in dual code counties. Only speaking for Galway as an example but fair to say at least half the county here support hurling only. Galway city is probably the most migrated City proportionally after Dublin from stats I saw some years ago so not a traditional gaa heartland (or quite a few support their county of origin) like Cork once was or Limerick/Waterford currently are. Having said all that Armagh have been a well supported County over the years.

GAA people are for the most part lazy slobs who'd rather sit on their couch than drive 2 hours to a game.
Wexford are often lauded as great support but they were the worst supported team in Thurles last year and when Clare got on top their supporters were there.
My cousin lives in Birmingham and plans his life around Villa games, home and away. He goes to matches every week. In Ireland, we complain about a match being "too far away" and "sure its on telly".
As somebody who once followed the unfashionable Dublin hurlers around the place, you could never tell me that there is anything better than being part of the away support.

Indeed and there are a group of people who think they should be able park right up at the gates of the ground.

Also it can be difficult to get to county games if your involved with your local club. Ireland has a very small population. The crowds we get at games are great for the most part. Winning teams will always gain more support and that goes for any sport.
