Its ok saying moderation with drinking, but where do you draw the line? Previously, you mentioned Meath players being taken away for a knees up before the Leinster final replay in 91. What happens if some of the team have no interest in drinking but feel pressured to do so because their team mates are doing it? Its not really the 'done thing' in modern sport. I agree there should be a window for lads who do want a drink at times when fixtures aren't as congested, but we all have to make sacrifices for different reasons in life too. I assume the substance you're talking about is PED's? It is a concern and more should definitely be done by the GAA but even pro sports like soccer seem to be turning a blind eye to it and they have more money than sense obviously. But mental health issues stem from a far bigger societal problem for me. Cost of living, cost of housing, social media, employment etc are the main issues today. Problems that existed in the past at different times but never altogether at this rate. Youngsters today have a tough gig just to get on their feet as adults. Most can't think of marriage until they're well into their 30s now, which has to be a constant burden on their shoulders. I think if the numbers of both players and supporters were taking a hit, then maybe it would be worth looking into things that might see a return to greater numbers but as far as I can see it's business as usual in that regard which tells me most people will still pay to watch and youngsters still want to play the game. As for Murphy, he is saying those words at 33 and after 15 years of intercounty competitiveness. Most players would be very lucky to last even two thirds of that with their county. I don't think he owes the game much at this stage of things, he will rightly retire a legend of the game. I'd take him for Antrim until the same age btw, but that's because we can never create and harness our own stars unfortunately. Club football should be enjoyed, you shouldn't be forcing lads to go tea total for a full season, which I have seen happening. Told not to go on stag weekends, managers calling training the morning after big weddings in the club. Bans on drink causes rows as you'll always get lads drinking but some are sneakier than the fool that's caught. Your right, bigger problems in clubs with other substances.

The original rules were made over 125 years ago when diets were different. One simple rule change could be maintain the rules as they were (no mark ) but reduce all teams down to 13 a side, creating more space for forward players. Think attendances will remain ok as gaa taps into an Irish psychology of something local. But outside of passion for my own county the rest of football matches on tg4 have become hard to watch. The Hurling on the other hand, more often than not, throws up great games, just a pity it's not played seriously in more counties LeitrimLover94 (Leitrim) - Posts: 22 - 12/02/2023 16:45:01 2457937 Link 3 |
Was just reading last week about Dick Fitzgerald, the Kerry player from the 1900's after whom Fitzerald Stadium is named and who wrote the seminal book "The Rules of Gaelic Football". Apparently he envisaged that the game would eventually evolve into 13-a-side. Maybe it's time to try it? (Would be a help to "weaker counties" too since obviously there's a better chance a county or club with a small pick would be able to muster 13 quality player)

There is plenty of space for forwards inside the D but they don't seem to want to go onto it for some reason. Hence the passing sideways, backways while supposedly attacking. Breffni1969 (Cavan) - Posts: 510 - 12/02/2023 20:08:17 2457983 Link 0 |

In soccer the players have near 650 sq metres space, in GAA the players have near 1000 sq metres. Plenty of space.

One way to show off is to moan about the "low standards of [sport/music/TV shows etc etc] today". The unsubtle underlying message is that you're a person of great taste and discernment, and that anyone who disagrees with you knows nothing. points50swiththeargyllsonthewrongfeet (Tyrone) - Posts: 282 - 12/02/2023 21:32:06 2458006 Link 1 |

He's from Monaghan! The constant trolling of Cavan, Tyrone, etc, is a symptom of an inferiority complex or something. Junior poster, Mrs T, the great Cavan gaels, mean Cavan people; he's a hindrance to proper banter and debate on this platform. I'd wager that many who have stopped posting were tired of his constant disruption of debate. Don't engage with him.
