I think Derek Lyng might have to plan without some of the older KK players, who are no longer operating at a high level. They need new faces, but the talent pool is not as deep as in the past. Kilkenny will still compete as always, but won't dominate the championship. The other Leinster teams should be contenders for provincial honours. thelongridge (Offaly) - Posts: 1879 - 25/07/2023 11:58:09 2496760 Link 0 |
Hope so. Certainly should be if prepared right.

John Kiely is stepping down as Principal of the Abbey CBS in Tipperary and taking up the role of Vice Principal instead. This is to take pressure off himself, and allow him the space to do the both Jobs even better (if that is even possible:). following the debate on the player of the year...I watched back the Sunday game start to finish again last night (didnt see it all Sunday night after watching the game live) What I will say is that Kyle Hayes was massive on Sunday, after Lynch went up CF Hayes was monumental and led from the back, his involvement and strenght and delivery we absolutely key to Limerick winning that All Ireland, along with Gillanes scoring prowess, Lynchs distribution, Barry Nash got little or no mention much and I thought he had a blinder not sure was he on Cody, but if he was Cody only got one score (a goal) I seen all Limericks games and Kyle Hayes was a common dominator, yes along with Gillane, in them winning them games. Normally the top sharpshooter gets it, look at it this way, if Kilkenny won on Sunday, and TJ Reid got 10 points plus (many from frees too let me add) there would be no debate about who was player of the year, not only that the debate that he is better than Henry Shefflin and DJ and Charlie Carter and dare we say Eddie Keher would be a live debate right now. Personally, I think Kyle Hayes deserves player of the year, he was moved up and down the pitch to different positions and still had excellent games. Cian Lynch only for injury going by his form on Sunday had he been back sooner would be definitely a contender too...I suppose Gillane only getting 2 points from play was it goinng by his standards just dampened down his claim to player of the year on Sunday...the sign of how good Limerick are they still scored 0-30 even if Gillane was quiet by his standards..from 42nd mintue to the 70th+ injury time. Limerick outscored Kilkenny by 0-19 to 0-15, in 30 odd minutes..that is some shooting...especially against Kilkenny..

A few words on this All Ireland win & Limerick hurling in general. slayer (Limerick) - Posts: 6480 - 27/07/2023 12:22:08 2497264 Link 3 |
Belated congratulations to Limerick. Far more knowledgeable people than me have posted about their hurling prowess but on a personal level I was in Limerick many years ago and spent the night in the company of some shannonsiders. They were great to me and made me feel welcome. Must say that I have met a few over here over the years and cant say a bad word about any of them. Had a good friend who was mad keen Hurling man but did not live to see his counties triumphs. Also think of him when I watch Limerick. Very good points but one man that seems to be always forgotten about is Dan Morrissey, since he came on full back against tipp in the second half in the Munster final in 2021,he had had been excellent,I don't understand how he isn't getting mentioned for player of the year ,when hannon went off against cork this year and they took Dan out of full back, cork got on top, they had to move Dan back to sort it out.

Great read. Well done. You brought me back through a lot of memories there, lots of them bad but that's what makes these days so special. Luimneach Abu. skillet (Limerick) - Posts: 1103 - 28/07/2023 23:00:21 2497526 Link 1 |
Totally agree about Dan. When JJ was switched from no. 7 to no. 3 for KK, the media used to be all over it. Almost no commentary on it when Dan does it. Mind you, JJ was an all-time great. Dan is a present-time great!

The next fascination for me is the next generation of players bubbling beneath the starting XV in the panel. I'd expect that JK will be keeping a close eye on the club scene over the next few months and will be offering opportunity to a number of players both in the Munster League and the NHL next spring. now the dust has settled on another all ireland final im going to give my tuppence worth on a few points. firstly eoin cody v aaron gillane for hurler of the year no contest cody 1 goal in final not enough , 2nd limerick had a more impressive route to final ie, clare , cork , waterford, ,tipp. and thats just in munster . galway semi final ,kilkenny had westmeath, antrim ,wexford and galway who lost in dramatic cicumstances. now clare were seriously unlucky in semi due to the greatest save ever seen. now lets back track to league final kilkenny also got 15 points that day limerick 2.20 thats a hammering albeit i know only league but the signs were there limerick were warming up... finally i was bemused by the bringing on of hogan by derek lyng surely there was young lads from last years u20 winning team who deserved a crack..just a thought . a joy to be in croke park for 4 in a row hillman (Limerick) - Posts: 27 - 02/08/2023 21:21:37 2498756 Link 0 |

Can't see it. Played very well in the league but couldn't crack the subs bench in the championship and he's already in his mid 20's.

Cian Lynch was key to all ireland win. Knockfiarna (Limerick) - Posts: 24 - 03/08/2023 22:07:39 2498949 Link 1 |
He made the subs bench last year as far as I know. Perhaps, I'm wrong. So, overall 2023 might be seen as a slight regression on 2022 for him. However, you also have to factor in that forwards Lynch and Casey were back. Backs Finn and English were out, so overall probably more places on the bench were up for grabs for backs in 2023 as opposed to 2022 when they were more disposed to forwards. However, Aiden O'Connor made the bench for the final this year which suggests that he was going better at training.

Reidy?
Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 13886 - 04/08/2023 14:16:47 2499037 Link 0 |
Reidy is a very unusual example. He went to Kildare and got back in after leaving the squad entirely. A lot depends on Michael's club form in championship but he's a very hard road. The way that the Limerick panel works at least to me is that the top 26 are nailed on and the remaining 10 are the development prospects. If you're in that bunch for a few years and you're still not cracking the championship squad, then your exposed to the new annual intake of fresh young talent who deserve the opportunity. If you get passed out - you won't last. Interco senior is a tough game and that starts with panel development. JK won't want to retire and leave a massive player vacuum behind him if he can help it.
