Bit of an overreaction, plenty of times an all Ireland finalist from the previous year has either pulled out or fielded a development team due to team holiday in pre season competitions, it will all forgotten about by the weekend when some other controversy has people talking.

Could be alright. The decision by both Louth and Kildare flies in the face of what this competition is all about. It was meant to allow counties to try out new players in an Inter County level competition. I think it is very disrespectful of both the competition and the opposing counties who may have welcomed the game to try out new players at that level. To say that a team cannot field is just ridiculous. Play your U21 team or your Junior team if you have to but fulfil your obligation to the competition and the opposition.

Louth are through to a semi-final, not the final. If there was the threat of expulsion for giving a walkover, they'd surely have sent down some sort of a team. Kildare were already out of the competition anyway. Expulsion would make no difference to them, unless it was carried over so that they weren't allowed to enter next year. O'Byrne cup is effectively a set of centralised pre-season friendlies with just enough competition history and credibility to ensure that a good chunk of those involved take it seriously enough to want to win it. Most stars of today in Leinster got their start in an experimental line-out in an O'Byrne Cup game. It serves a purpose. Dismantling it and throwing the playing of friendlies to the county boards to manage arbitrarily, is not progress, certainly not for my county! I don't think we should declare an existential crisis just yet. Leinster council need to sit a couple of counties down and do some hard talking about responsibility, even for dead-rubber games!

It's a pre-season competition and if you enter in it, you're should be obliged to fulfill all fixtures except of course in exceptional circumstances. I get it that it's windy and wet and you might have nothing to play for, but surely it's a great opportunity to try out players. Teams pulling out goes against the ethos of what the GAA stands for. Maybe it should change to a straight open draw knock out competition where all teams get a game and then depending on the luck of the draw maybe get a few games.At the moment as doon as teams lose they withdraw citing all sorts of excuses.As the late Great Paudi O'Shea (RIP) called the O Byrne cup "a chance to blow out the dirty petrol"!!-maybe it should be kept going but teams have to respect it whatever form it takes. It was run as a straight knock-out up to about ten years ago. The group format where everybody gets (or is supposed to get!) two or three games makes it more useful for preparing for the League and giving new faces or fringe players a run out. Like somebody else above, it's far preferable to me than just leaving it up to counties to arrange challenge matches between themselves.
