I love hurling but there are times when it is difficult to listen to hurling supporters talk about hurling as if it's the only skilled game in the world. The score of the day yesterday was Argentina's second goal. The speed, touch and teamwork were phenomenal. Mbappe's second goal deserves honourable mention too. I'm looking forward to the club football semi finals and the club hurling final. We are blessed to have the two sports.

It was founded by people who were indeed "narrow minded" in the context that was implied. They did support the exclusive playing of Irish sports, and many of them also supported the replacement of English with Irish as the spoken language. And of course the IRB was central to both projects and organised an armed uprising at a time when the vast amount of Irish people were happy to lose their identity. As most are now.

It's clear to me that the split season is working when we have in recent weeks witnessed.superb club fare particularly in hurling. Chief among those contests were Na Piarsaigh v Ballygunner and Kilmacud Crokes v Ballyhale Shamrocks. Both of those games were matched by yesterday's game with Ballyhale overcoming Ballygunner in a massive contest. Dunloy's performance was exceptional too. Since 1972 when Roscrea won the inaugural club hurling final we have been treated to fantastic games where the pride of one's county attempts to be the best in one's province and ultimately hopes to get to Croke Park on All Irl Club Final day. For those who follow hurling we absolutely love the contest between these tests but also love the skill that we are privileged to witness . Of course full time players who play Soccer and reach the World Cup also represent their countries and display exceptional ball control and skills and are to be admired. But for.me - a long time sports fan of.many sports , you just cannot beat hurling. And hurling followers are right to be a little bit snotty about their sport as it is the best field sport in the world. Fair play to Lionel and Kyrian for demonstrating their skills but fair play also to all 4 teams yesterday representing their clubs and their counties for performing so well and displaying the great skils of our game. Aren't we lucky to have the final to look forward to also... Dunloy against Ballyhale. Privileged. carlowman (Carlow) - Posts: 1875 - 19/12/2022 20:57:09 2450778 Link 0 |
I'm a blow in and never saw a hurling game until 1989. I played Rugby for 15 years and still follow the same soccer teams I followed since I was a teenager. By far and away hurling is the best game to watch.

In hindsight it was a mistake by GAA to have club semis on same time as World cup final. galwayford (Galway) - Posts: 2614 - 20/12/2022 10:28:55 2450797 Link 0 |
Hindsight wasn't required to have that opinion, having arguably the biggest club game in a decade on at the same time as the biggest sporting event on the planet was hardly going to work well.

absolutely. ridiculous decision to have it at the same time at a cavernous venue. On Saturday somewhere a lot closer to the neighbouring counties would have made for a better atmosphere and a wider audience.

Absolutely, Ballyhale/Ballygunner Saturday evening in Portlaoise with Thurles unavailable would have been a great occasion, with the St Thomas wedding put back that game could have been at 1 on Sunday or Saturday afternoon in Parnell Park, Navan, Breffni Park etc.

Great post carlowman and I would agree with quite a lot of it. A lot of what we have seen in the hurling club championships this year has been enjoyable. We have also seen matches that have been less than competitive. That however is true of all sports. I enjoy all field sports. Football, hurling and soccer would be followed by rugby. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I find much to admire in all field sports and I am of the firm belief that each of the sports particularly hurling, football and soccer can learn from each other. What I find hard to stomach is the smug arrogance of some hurling supporters who routinely come out with phrases such as, " football is a game for fellas who can't play hurling" or " hurling is the best game in the world." Really? Ask the billions of soccer supporters what the best game in the world is. I was at a national league final double bill in 2019 in Croke Park. Limerick played Waterford in the hurling final in what was a very routine win for them in a game that was devoid of any real competitiveness. I was stunned to see the hurling supporters get up and leave in their thousands before the start of the football final. It was their loss because the football final between Mayo and Kerry was a cracker. As I said earlier carlowman, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and there is much to enjoy and admire in all sports. That's what I will continue to do, watch, admire and enjoy all of them.
