The club semis matter a lot to the clubs involved and to their counties as well. carlowman (Carlow) - Posts: 1875 - 09/12/2022 18:35:00 2449996 Link 0 |
Good job they didn't postpone the games so people could watch the "dancing Brazilians." BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3520 - 09/12/2022 21:35:23 2450005 Link 2 |
It's just an opinion, so when you post bits of rubbish I don't come on here to remind you of the rubbish You post at times.

The issue with culture change is mentioned a few times in your post.....TV. TV, and now in more recent years phones, have killed the culture of rambling to peoples houses which was the essence of community and has pretty much done away with the traditions of story telling, the oral genealogy, games of 25, random dances and music, the wren boys, bonfires and more. Fragments remain. I say that as someone who watches tv. I think we should be less afraid of "foreign" sports and more concerned with how community bonds have weakened. A confident/prosperous culture should be able to embrace the new without losing its roots and its root is community.

Irish culture will be a museum piece in 30 years the way things are going. Even the Gaelscoileanna and the schools in the Gaeltachts themselves are coming under pressure to cater for people whose first language is not even English. Almost happened before of course after An Gorta Mór, but difficult to see any turnaround at this stage/ BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3520 - 10/12/2022 14:39:28 2450043 Link 3 |
What xenophobic, antagonistic and nasty post. Completely false. KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 3758 - 10/12/2022 15:40:44 2450049 Link 0 |
What part is false? Anyone familiar with schools situation knows this is a fact.

Arra more damage has been done to the language from our own people and British policy than a few foreign kids. They should cater to them so they can learn Irish. Can't see anything negative about that. The problem with culture is that Irish people are stepping away from traditions and community of their own volition. We've embraced the individualism and materialism of the Anglophone world far too readily. MachaireConnacht (Roscommon) - Posts: 1000 - 10/12/2022 17:09:04 2450058 Link 0 |

The problem is too many do gooders crying discrimination if you even think about looking after and promoting your own people first.

Freedom of speech has nothing to do with mobile phones, dancing at the crossroads or rambling from house to house, story telling or games of 25, or other stuff mentioned. Sport and the way it is brought to us has nothing to do with music, the wren boys or bonfires. Culture change happens naturally over the years, but rapid change can bring culture shock.

Reading this thread I reckon gives a good indication of the age profile of HS posters. I reckon the vast majority of HS posters are over the age of 50 , and maybe there's even a majority over 60. Why do I say this? Because that's the cohort generally that will say in a fixtures clash such as this, that they will watch the club semi finals and not the World Cup final. I would hazard a guess that if a poll was conducted among Gaa fans under 30 years of age less that 1% would make that choice. No need to look down your nose, that stuff kept people binded together. The culture shock has been the decimation of community and it has a profound impact on society, especially mental health.

I would be in the older age category that you mention. Yes, I will watch the hurling simply because I expect it to be much more entertaining than the soccer game. I'm quite sure there are many under 30s who would feel the same, and certainly a lot more than 1%. I've already spoken to several younger people who will also watch the hurling, none of them from either Kilkenny or Waterford.

With likely line up for the final now, I'd safely say that knocks quite a whack off the potential final viewer rating here. Event junkies and genuine soccer supporters pretty much. Few of them TG4 hurling people, would be safe to say. GAA would have looked like absolute clowns had they rescheduled to suit those who probably wouldn't watch a hurling match if their lives depended on it. Well I wouldnt expect you to agree with me anyway! We all know that for a sizeable percentage of northern gaels soccer is still a foreign game and if the ban could be brought back a lot of ye would want it! So yeah, I'd say up north more of the younger age group will prioritize the club semi finals ahead of the World Cup final than will happen in the rest of the country.
