A Team of the Year should be the best lads for that year regardless of county. Besides, 2 per county would still have left most counties unrepresented. This might encourage others to train and play harder to win next year. There's not a huge gulf in standard between any of the teams in Divisions 3 and 4.

We would be moving into 'participation trophy' territory with a move like that. The team of the year should reflect the best players, regardless of how many appear from any one county. Quotas would discredit the process entirely and make the accolade meaningless.

Be a bit unfair on the winners and lads who had great year over many games if they didn't get one especially when the Liam Mac/Sam Maguire All Stars wouldn't use the same method of selection, maybe a cap of 5 be more realistic and even then probably not. Do think in recent years the final and winners carry way more weight than ever, even at their height Kilkenny or Kerry did win as many all stars as Limerick or Dublin picked up some years. In the 1980s you had all stars in hurling from Laois, Westmeath and Antrim. There's no right way to pick all stars, if it goes the public vote it'll just turn into a popularity vote, (think the NBA trialled that for a few years but it was just the same lads no matter how they played due to their popularity) There's going to be flaws to the selection process. Brian Whelahan winning hurler of the year but no star in 94 another example. Different tastes in players too, how many times has the Sunday Game team of the year been completely different to the actual all stars team. I remember in 2017 nearly all the pundits picked Gearoid McInerney as Hurler of the year and he wasn't even nominated then for the proper award then. I think the importance of all stars has diminished a bit over the last decade or so, still unbelievable for any people to get one but I don't think they carry as much weight in interest for the public or media that they did. Shane Walsh is going to win his first all star and nominated for Footballer of the Year but he won't be attending the award show at all, going to a fundraiser in Chicago for Galway Community/GAA out there, no doubt he's getting a nice packet to go out there and rightly so but if that was 10/15 years ago it would've been the biggest day in his sporting life outside of an all Ireland win but shows a little how the all stars have fallen a bit in their standing. It'll always be about winning with the team and what someone will always be remembered for first (probably matter to players but not as much I think)

Do not agree at all, too many 'medals for all' competitions about as it is... beidhmeanseo (Donegal) - Posts: 143 - 26/10/2022 10:49:47 2445479 Link 0 |
Your suggestion would weaken the awards albeit it's the Tailteann Cup. By the same token you would need to do likewise with the All Stars. Could you see Kerry happy with 2 awards ? eoinog (Sligo) - Posts: 2096 - 26/10/2022 10:52:44 2445480 Link 0 |
No I don't think so. Should the all stars be limited. It might be a second tier competition but it is still a meritocracy.

What conceivable, measurable benefit to the strength or development of football in a county would getting a player named on the Team of the Year deliver? The Team of the Year should be just that - the best players who have played in that competition that season. Londonish (UK) - Posts: 35 - 26/10/2022 11:21:07 2445488 Link 0 |
Sure why not just give everyone who played in it an award while we're at it.

any county footballer is a decent footballer and a good athlete!! the game now a days is basically professional so no this idea is crazy and what your suggesting makes no sense!! its a team of the year based on how an individual plays in that competition!! if it is giving to 2 reps from each county that most years the same players will receive the award!! ie Longford: mickey quinn Leitrim: K Beirne westmeath: Heslin Cavan G mcKeirnan Tipp: Sweeney Fermanagh: Quigley and the list goes on! Should be the best players at each position no matter who they play for. Anything else and we're into this 'everyone gets a medal' rubbish. FrankieJoe (Wicklow) - Posts: 95 - 31/10/2022 17:30:06 2446055 Link 0 |

There are 16 teams in the Cup. So who do you propose misses out when you allow 2 per county?
