Sky Sports To Stop Showing GAA

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Signing on the bottom line of the sky deal was an unfortunate error of judgement by Croke Park, in truth it never sat well with us mere every day underdog gaels, in fact two or three years after singing the sky deal croke park found themselves trying to justify the same said deal.
There is over 40% of counties in our country that possibly never get to see their county play championship football on our national terrestrial provider(s), so what chance have they seeing it on sky as sky caters for only the very best.

The provincial senior club championship is the last of a dying breed as in no back door, it's all on the day so to speak, in my view it is a more balanced and fairer system, those games, clubs and players are entitled to some bit of on air recognition from our own national terrestrial providers, after all they put in the same work rate as the more successful county players.

Our very own terrestrial tv channels has the ability to promote and foster our gaelic games than sky could only dream of.

Personally I'm happy to see it end.

PS The availability of the sky sports channel has nothing to do with my decision.

RTE have done very little to promote club hurling or football. And I can't remember the last time I saw any of the so called lesser counties games on it either.

Yes, you are correct RTE could have, and should have done a lot more to promote club hurling and football in particular in the weaker counties, along with that I can never remember being able to watch Carlow senior footballers or hurlers play their game live on any terrestrial tv channel, effectively that means RTE. However a few short years ago the footballers were to meet Monaghan through the qualifiers, that one and only game was to go out live on sky,? I happened to be across the water work related so I missed out on the chance of seeing them live on tv, dare I say it, sky tv.

You say you can't remember the last time you saw any of the so called lesser counties games on live tv, well no less than two weeks ago I was delighted to get the chance to watch the Carlow champions contest the leinster senior football club championship against St Pat's of Wicklow live on RTE tv they had an unexpected convincing win. I also saw O'Hanrahans pick up a leinster SF title on RTE tv, along with that I saw Eire Og pick up a few leinster titles and contest 3 all Ireland finals (one a replay) live on RTE tv, to finish it off I saw Mount Leinster Rangers collect their leinster senior hurling title and contest their all Ireland final live on RTE tv otherwise known as terrestrial tv.In truth that's an awful lot more than sky ever done for the weaker counties.

In the meantime good luck to you and your beloved Wexford in both codes, I doubt if you will have to wait too long to watch them live on tv.

The young Gael has the sports channels.
This week the young Gael had access to watch 24 soccer games across Premier League and Champions league and plenty more if you include the Europa league, the conference league, the LOI and various other top flight leagues around Europe.
This week the young Gael could watch 8 top level URC rugby games.
This week the young Gael can waste away a Sunday evening watching 2/3 NFL games live from America
The young Gael can still watch 31 GAA games a year. In an age of information overload where there's so much noise to cut through keeping the coverage at the current level is going backwards rapidly."
The Young Gael can for sure see all that, but most don't bother. This age group are more interested in the "quick highlights", i.e. tell me in 3-4 minutes what happened in the game.
But I wouldn't want my 3 lads (teenagers) to only have an interest in GAA like many "Auld Gaels". I want them to be open to other worlds beyond the GAA.
I have always wanted my young lads to try every sport. They love hurling, like football and soccer and hated rugby. One of them plays tennis, another likes athletics.
I will never stop them playing any sport, nor do I think it would be a good idea to. If they get to a level of any where they need to give it their full commitment and if there is good potential to get to the top level, maybe then.
Having a diverse mind is good for young people, the day of the died in the wood gael is probably gone.

Do they definitely put in the same work as the more successful county players though?

That's a loaded question 9801 as I'm not sure how to measure it; however our best chance is at club level, it's on the day no back door etc, at junior level today Clonmore (Carlow) 3-5 Straffan (Kildare) 0-8 I know it's at junior level but that was a big ask of Clonmore against a much fancied Kildare side.

To morrow Palatine will face Portarlington in the leinster club sf championship and that is an even bigger ask of Pal. but - - -

Probably doesn't answer your question but they do the best they can with what is at their disposal, and all that..
