:D That's an obvious flaw in his plan all right. Also how provincial club finals would be in week 51. This year, that'd mean all four of them being played over Saturday/Sunday December 20 & 21. Others years, that Saturday and Sunday would fall on December 24 & 25, or December 25 & 26. Sure it'd be one way to spend Christmas. In the USA, there are NFL games on Christmas Day. We could have the provincial club finals. Might start a whole new tradition :) Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 3151 - 16/09/2025 18:14:02 2636475 Link 0 |
I hate to break it too you but its not my plan. i was just outlining the schedule of fixtures if the All Ireland final is pushed back into August. With the tailteann cup running into July - even the weaker counties cant plan their club championships until late July. When you put down all the fixtures and the dates, you can easily see that moving the all Ireland isn't really a runner unless the provincial club championships are moved into January. Everyone is happy with the current situation - no one will vote to allow the clubs championships be squeezed by another 3-4 weeks. There are already 2 Wexford men complaining about it and it has only been typed out on a sports blog. tirawleybaron (Mayo) - Posts: 1615 - 22/09/2025 12:41:58 2637046 Link 1 |
I don't mind the Provincial club Championships being put back to January.

If the All Ireland goes into August - the provincial club finals (and maybe semis) will have to go into January 2025. God help you if you are an intercounty player, in college and your club makes the provincial final.

Anybody whose club makes a Provincial or AI Final isn't training with their county while their club is still competing as it is. Why do you imagine that will change? As regards Fitzgibbon intercounty managers make allowances for that too already. Again, why do you think this will change? Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 17175 - 27/09/2025 08:36:09 2637612 Link 0 |
The suggested All Ireland football final on the second weekend of August is about as far as the inter county season can reasonably encroach on the current club championship season. There are inefficiencies in the current club championship season which makes that two week encroachment doable. The CPA will have to regroup if there is any further encroachment IMHO. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 9203 - 27/09/2025 13:03:33 2637637 Link 0 |
At the minute, only the All Ireland semi finalists (4 hurling and 4 football) have no offseason. Push the All Ireland final back and you end up with double or even 4 times that amount. While they might not be doubling up on a given week - its the lack of rest periods that caused burn out and injuries. tirawleybaron (Mayo) - Posts: 1615 - 29/09/2025 10:52:33 2637781 Link 0 |
Define off season?

I agree with the premise of more rest for players. The problem I have is that when you free up the calendar, club/county/college/school coaches fill it up with extra training sessions. As good as the colleges competitions are, I think they can be revamped. I would stretch out their comp, rather than shorten it. Stop any college kids playing county league. Have a longer college season. It stops the players being rushed from pillar to post. Then the added importance that's been thrown onto league position needs to be done away with and have no baring on championship. Two different competitions. Then more players will get the opportunity to play league. This takes the burden off players having to play all year round and running from team to team. Take the choice out of the players hands and stop coaches pressuring them to play too many games. BaldyBadger (Cork) - Posts: 336 - 30/09/2025 09:45:59 2637909 Link 0 |

The colleges are a law unto themselves. They used to be for undergraduates - most lads started at 17/18 in freshers, and finished their 3/4 year course at 21/22 (with max of 2 years playing sigerson/fitzgibbon while playing a bit of U21 football (which was during the summer). Due to scholarships and other payments - most sigerson and fitzgibbon players are post graduates, playing intercounty football aged anything between 20-30. Colleges football should be for undergraduates only - there shouldnt be a case where a player is asked to play intercounty and colleges at the same time. tirawleybaron (Mayo) - Posts: 1615 - 07/10/2025 14:12:56 2638841 Link 0 |

Or its more people are doing post grads now because theyre needed etc for professional careers so theyre playing collefe level older and people are entering third level later as well. much more are 18/19 entering college which is a factor as well. keeping third level for undergrads only would be foolish.
