Something I was thinking about the other day is now players jobs have changed in the last 15/20 years. oneoff (UK) - Posts: 1651 - 01/10/2022 12:43:26 2442405Link 0 |

Very good question. I think that nowadays more players stay in education (masters and PhDs) a lot longer than in the past. That way they have more time for hurling/football, and have less hassle getting time off work. foreveryoung (USA) - Posts: 2392 - 01/10/2022 13:33:44 2442409Link 1 |

| Back in the day you'd get the odd priest playing inter-county games. Cockney_Cat (UK) - Posts: 2866 - 03/10/2022 19:34:37 2442706Link 0 |
| Paudie and Willie Fitzmaurice of Limerick, Iggy Clarke (great hurler) and his brother Joe (I think) of Galway, Mick Kennedy of Offaly, Paddy Barry of Cork, and Tom Fogarty of Tipp come to mind. None from Kilkenny. Mind you, there's lots of Protestants in that part of Ireland! foreveryoung (USA) - Posts: 2392 - 04/10/2022 11:13:33 2442752Link 1 |

| While we're on the topic of jobs, what player do you think has had the most jobs? My money would be on Colm O'Rourke: school principal, TV pundit, columnist/journalist, farmer, racehorse owner (at one stage anyway), international rules manager, club football manager, now Meath manager, and he may have even been involved in a pub at some stage, if my little grey cells serve me right! foreveryoung (USA) - Posts: 2392 - 04/10/2022 11:36:49 2442758Link 0 |
| Odhran McFadden-Ferry from Donegal footballers is in the army. He missed a campaign a few years ago when he was deployed to Syria. Currently out injured with the dreaded ACL. Lockjaw (Donegal) - Posts: 10101 - 04/10/2022 12:11:57 2442762Link 1 |

| Davy Fitz would give him a run for his money on that front. He's had plenty of different jobs on the go over the last few years. Sean Armstrong was in the army when playing football for Galway. You'd see far fewer tradesmen playing intercounty nowadays. They just don't have the time needed, especially those who are self-employed. Richie Fahy was a plasterer when Galway won in 2001. | I doubt if any of them would come close to Briege . Stonemason, vets assistant and then on to milking 500 cows a day and still somehow managing to win 18 All Ireland medals in between ( most of them with no helmet). A bona fide legend if there ever was one ,and dead sound to boot UtahBlaine (Galway) - Posts: 153 - 04/10/2022 21:32:03 2442826Link 0 |
