Something I was thinking about the other day is now players jobs have changed in the last 15/20 years. Does anyone know the last players from the following jobs to win All-Irelands? I know there's been a few from Tipp and Kilkenny in hurling. But who was the last member of the Army to win a football All-Ireland? Jim Gavin is the only one I think of and even then he was in the Air Corps. Have their been anyone in either code from the Navy? In hurling is Noel Hickey the last farmer to win an All-Ireland? Very good question. I think that nowadays more players stay in education (masters and PhDs) a lot longer than in the past. That way they have more time for hurling/football, and have less hassle getting time off work. Correct me if wrong but is Mikey Butler cuurently doing a dairy farming course. Here is a quote from Micheal Rice on Butler from the past season "I'll give you an example. He works for a local farmer, Brian Houlihan, and even on the Saturday before the Leinster Final he was working late cutting silage." Paudie and Willie Fitzmaurice of Limerick, Iggy Clarke (great hurler) and his brother Joe (I think) of Galway, Mick Kennedy of Offaly, Paddy Barry of Cork, and Tom Fogarty of Tipp come to mind. While we're on the topic of jobs, what player do you think has had the most jobs? Davy Fitz would give him a run for his money on that front. He's had plenty of different jobs on the go over the last few years. Sean Armstrong was in the army when playing football for Galway. You'd see far fewer tradesmen playing intercounty nowadays. They just don't have the time needed, especially those who are self-employed. Richie Fahy was a plasterer when Galway won in 2001. I doubt if any of them would come close to Briege . Stonemason,vets assistant and then on to milking 500 cows a day and still somehow managing to win 18 All Ireland medals in between ( most of them with no helmet).
