Mayo Junior Championship Round 1.

Group 1:
Eastern Gaels V Cill Chomain
A home tie for the Brickens outfit and they will be throwing everything at the Erris side.
Cill Chomain will feel hard done as they were the only team to give Kilmeena a game last year in their All-Ireland success bar the final in Croke Park.
Cill Chomain will be strong favorite for the title this year.
Cill Chomain by 4

Moygownagh V Ballycastle
2 North Mayo outfits that know each other out.
Ballycastle usually make the last 8 while Moygownagh have been struggling for some time.
Ballycastle by 3.

Group 2
Ardagh V Ballycroy
Ardagh have not been consistent enough to prove me that they can win a Junior title and maybe they lack quality without James Carr.
Ballycroy have some good young footballers such as the Conways brothers.

Ardagh by 4.

Swinford V Kilfian
It's must be in the 60s or the 70s since Swinford last partipate in the Junior Championship and for a population of almost 1,500. It's probably a kick for Swinford that they need because they have been struggling in Intermediate for the past 5 years.
Kilfian a small club will be playing for pride and passion for their parish but it's a step to far.
Swinford by 6

Group 3:
Islandeady V Killala
Probably the game to watch in the Junior competition.
Islandeady another favorite for the title.
Killala promoted to Division 2 next season is a brilliant achievement but their league final defeat to Bonniconlon will knock them back so they had 2 weeks recovery and recharge for this tie.

Islandeady by 3

Kilmovee Shamrocks BYE

Group 4:
Achill V Tourmakeady this is 5th time these 2 West Mayo outfits meet again this year and they might be as well head to Westport for a session after for a reunion.
Tourmakeady are making improvements again after a poor few years previously.
Achill have been struggling for numbers while Manager Martin Keane is now player/manager.

Tourmakeady by 2.

Lacken Sarsfield V Shrule/Glencorrib
Lacken will be doing everything they can to participate in this year Championship and playing for pride for the late Paddy Connor R.I.P
Shrule/Glencorrib will be disappointed not to get promoted to Division 2 but they may refocus and they will be to good for Lacken.

Shrule/Glencorrib by 8.

Mayo Intermediate Championship Round 1.

Group 1:
Bonniconlon V Lahardane McHales
Very few experts will be backing either team to win IFC this year so both will be targeting this game as a must win.
Bonniconlon won Division 3 with ease while Lahardane were relegated from Division 2.

Bonniconlon by 2

Louisburgh V Crossmolina Deel Rovers
Louisburgh will be among the favorites for title and relegated from Division 1 after 1 year but had a lot of encouraging performances.
Crossmolina have failed to get beyond the 1/4 finals since relegated from Senior in 2018.

Louisburgh by 3

Group 2:
Ballinrobe V Parke/Keelouges/Crimlin
Probably the game of that weekend for IFC. Parke/K/C are flying but suffer a defeat in Division 2 final.
Ballinrobe hold there own in Division 1.

Parke/K/C by 2.

Kiltane V Burrishoole
Kiltane will play Intermediate for only a 3rd time.
They have lost Mikey Sweeney to Injury.
Burrishoole a strong physical team but depend to much on Fintan McMananon if back from USA.

Kiltane by 3.

Group 3:
Ballyhaunis V Castlebar Mitchels B
Ballyhaunis sore from last year final defeat have to do all again starting from scratch.
Castlebar B not to be written off depending who is available in the panel.

Ballyhaunis by 4.

Ardnaree Sarsfields V Bohola Moy Davitts
Ardnaree have been poor at this level since winning Junior 2015 and just recently suffered relegation from Division 2.
Moy Davitts should be thereafter last 4 or last 8.

Bohola Moy Davitts by 3.

Group 4:
Kiltimagh V Hollymount/Carramore
Both teams are in for a chance at the title.
Kiltimagh are like Breaffy at this level losing finals.
Hollymount/Carramore have 2015 Intermediate winning manager Tom Connelly on board again.

Kiltimagh by 2.

Kilmeena V Kilmaine
Kilmeena have to shake off there all-Ireland success and go again for the IFC Jack Carney and Oisin Mullen both should be home from USA.

Kilmaine by 2.

Mayo Senior Football Championship Round 1:

Group 1:
The Neale V Westport
This is there 3rd season for the Cong side and they are missing Tommy Conroy so it's a huge loss so will need Stephen Conroy and Padraig Walsh to step up a gear.
Westport 3rd season going that I expect to win the SFC failed to get beyond the Semifinals stages for the past 2 seasons. I honestly don't know this year depending how many Galácticos
players they are missing in USA.

Westport by 4.

Ballintubber V Mayo Gaels
Cillian O'Connor should be back in flying colors, I'm hearing that Alan Dillon is back but might be wrong.
Mayo Gaels will be playing Senior football for the 1st time since 2002 and they hold there own in Division 1 but it's all about scraping as much points as possible to survive.

Ballintubber by 4

Group 2:
Ballaghaderren V Balllina Stephenites
Ballaghaderren with all the players they have in disposal they should be at least top 2 favorite for the SFC no county players except for David McBrien so they have David Drake, Cian/Andy Hanley, Andy Moran is back, Kuba Callaghan and Seamus Cunniffe.
Ballina were my favorite for the SFC but I read that Evan Regan (USA) Ciaran Treacy (Dubai) 2 big forwards gone.
Could be a classic game.

Ballina Stephenites by 2.

Knockmore V Aghamore
Knockmore have a full deck except for Darren McHale, Knockmore going for 3 in a row since Castlebar Mitchels complete 2015-2017.
Aghamore Senior since 2009 have been poor in this grade a handful of quarters finals and mostly relegation candidates.

Knockmore by 4.

Group 3:
Claremorris V Breaffy
For the past decade Claremorris have been quite dominate at Underage titles but failed to make no impact at Senior football only semi finals in 2008 and 2017.
Breaffy I believe have miss the boat for the SFC title and they were bullied by Belmullet last year quarterfinal.
The O'Sheas can only do so much and I always believe that Liam Irwin was the missing link for there 2018 & 2020 final defeat.

Breaffy by 4.

Balla V Belmullet
Balla have certainly have some journey Junior 2018, Intermediate 2020 and won the relegation final last year.
It's all about settling into Senior football for Balla now.
Are Belmullet are a 1 year wonder? They have lost Shane Nallen and Eoin O'Donoghue also a Boylan man in defense.
Belmullet seems to deal well with players departures as 2018 IFC team V 2021 SFC finalist only 4 survivors from each team.

Belmullet by 1.

Group 4:
Castlebar Mitchels V Charlestown Sarsfields
Mitchells seems to be back on the map after their recent Division 1 title success.
I heard James Durcan is gone with a cruciate done, they have new players such as Sean Morahan, Bob Tuohy and U20 Mayo player Paddy Heneghan.
Charlestown are not as forceful as they were in 2001-2009 but hard beaten in championship football they have Colm Maye, Paul Towey (If back from USA) and reliable Gareth O'Donnell.

Castlebar Mitchels by 3.

Garrymore V Davitts
A south Mayo derby Garrymore have been boosted by former Corofin 4 All-Ireland Club winner Ciaran McGrath on there team. It's amazing achievement for Garrymore not even a town no shop or pub in the area also partipatng Senior football since 1969 I think.
Davitts Senior since 2012 have only made past group stages once in 2019 so need to start making improvements or they will return to Intermediate football.

Garrymore by 2.

Mayo Junior Football Championship Round 2.

Group 1:
Ballycastle V Eastern Gaels
This tie will be the battle of finishing 2nd place in the group. Fergal Forde is back after traveling. Eastern Gaels need to improve their discipline as they finish with 13 men's V Cill Chomain.
Will be close game.

Ballycastle by 1.

Cill Chomain V Moygownagh
Cill Chomain should have no problem getting through this tie. Martin Geraghty is back this year for the whites.
Moygownagh will be sore after losing by 1 to north Mayo rivals Ballycastle but this game is a step to far for Moygownagh.

Cill Chomain by 8.

Group 2:
Ballycroy V Swinford
A lot of experts thought it be shock if Ballycroy have beaten Ardagh I disagree as Ballycroy are a decent side. Brendan & Micheal Conway are fine footballers.
Swinford will go in this tie fresh as they were given the points last week V Kilfian.
Ballycroy at home will throw everything at the "Hardy bucks"

Swinford by 5.

Kilfian V Ardagh
Kilfian conceded their game last week V Swinford and I don't know there reason. Cathal & Ciaran Boland should be rarely to go.
Ardagh must have taken Ballycroy for granted last week so they must improve but should get through this game.

Ardagh by 5.

Group 3:
Killala V Kilmovee Shamrocks
Killala gave Islandeady a run for their money last week after their recent league final hammering. Kilmovee also go into this game fresh having receive a bye in a 3 team group. Think 2018 Mayo U20 Cathal Horan is gone to USA or OZ.

Killala by 5.

Islandeady BYE

Group 4:
Tourmakeady V Lacken Sarsfields
Tourmakeady are on a verge of making the last 8 of the JFC for the time since returning to Junior in 2018 a great win away V Achill when veteran Kevin Dolan still kicking scores.
Lacken will be doing there best to upset them.

Tourmakeady by 7.

Shrule/Glencorrib V Achill
Pressure is on Achill if they failed to lose they are out and usually always in the last 8 thereafter.
Evergreen Michael Dara Sweeney came on last week V Tourmakeady determined to win for Achill.
Shrule/Glencorrib go into this game untested after they beat Lacken easy.
I expect Shrule/Glencorrib to go far.

Shrule/Glencorrib by 3

Mayo Intermediate Championship Round 2:

Group 1:
Crossmolina Deel Rovers V Bonniconlon
Crossmolina were only within a goal from Louisburgh for up to 55minutes when 2nd goal kill the challenge and if Jordan Flynn was available it may have change the game. Bonniconlon morale is up after winning Division 3 and there Round 1 win.
They have met in recent years in the Championship and it was close.

Crossmolina by 3.

Lahardane McHales V Louisburgh
Lahardane are dealt with a huge loss in Paul Coleman Injury last week. They are at home and they usually relegation candidates. Dylan Prendergast score 2-4 last week for Louisburgh but still given a test by Crossmolina.

Louisburgh by 2.

Group 2:
Parke/Keelouges/Crimlin V Kiltane
Both teams have lost there openers which I expected both teams to win.
It's a do or die for both teams and Parke/K/C need to win as they are huge candidates for the IFC. Kiltane defeat last week marked a sign that they won't be returning to Senior football for another few years as they need to build a new team.

Parke/K/C by 4.

Burrishoole V Ballinrobe
Burrishoole were very impressive last week with Jason Doherty and Fintan McMananon causing problems. Ballinrobe came through a huge battle V Parke/K/C and led by 6 HT and finish by 1pt win they need to maintain there lead.

Burrishoole by 2.

Group 3:
Castlebar Mitchels B V Ardnaree Sarsfields
The county town were 9pts up at HT last week V Ballyhaunis and only scored 1pt in the 2nd half so they bound to be kicking themselves for a draw as losing the 1Point may cost them a 1/4 final spot later.
Ardnaree received a hiding last week at home and there form has been poor this year.

Castlebar Mitchels B by 3.

Bohola Moy Davitts V Ballyhaunis
The Foxford outfit scored 2-16 which is a big score. Ballyhaunis beaten finalist last year need to get a result and deserved praises for coming back from 9point to a draw V Castlebar B.

Bohola Moy Davitts by 3.

Group 4:
Hollymount/Carramore V Kilmeena
Hollymount/Carramore received a trimming last week V Kiltimagh 9points they may be to dependent on the Darren/Stephen Coen.
Kilmeena are 60 minutes from a 1/4 final spot and they are in a good place also a hard fought win V Kilmaine.

Kilmeena by 2.

Kilmaine V Kiltimagh
I hope to attend this game as this will be tight. Kilmaine only lost by the minimum V Kilmeena. Kiltimagh rip Hollymount/Carramore so Oisín Mullen will probably keep close tabs on Conor Malee who was reported excellent last week.

Kilmaine by 1.

Mayo Senior Football Championship Round 2:

Group 1:
Mayo Gaels V The Neale
Both teams would have been sore this week after there respective hiding from round 1. Adam/John Gallagher and Ethan Henry would need a big performance.
The Neale have lost Tommy Conroe but also lost Steven Conroy and Padraic Walsh to Injury to so it's has weaken them a lot.

Mayo Gaels by 3.

Westport V Ballintubber
Very exciting game and hard to call. Westport gave a weaken Neale team a hiding. Ballintubber appears to be not gone with Jason Gibbons rolling back the years with his fine performances last week V Mayo Gaels.

Westport by 2

Group 2:
Aghamore V Ballaghaderren
2 East Mayo teams desperate need the points in this group of death.
Aghamore were never going to beat Knockmore but gave a creditable display. Ballaghaderren probably should have held on and beat Ballina last weekend but they have 1pt.

Ballaghaderren by 1

Ballina Stephenites V Knockmore
I said Ballina were my favorites at the start of the year but since last week Ger Cafferkey (retired) Ciaran Treacy (Dubai) and Evan Regan only back from USA with limited football played.
Knockmore seems to have a full deck except for Darren McHale (still not match fit)

Knockmore by 2

Group 3:
Belmullet V Claremorris
Belmullet came back from the dead last week V Balla. Ronan Murray is on form with 3 goals last week. Ryan O'Donoghue still absent with a groin injury. Claremorris were well beaten at home V Breaffy and may need Conor Diskin in midfield as he was left in full forward to long.

Belmullet by 4.

Breaffy V Balla
Business as usual for Breaffy last week and set for 10 consecutive season in a row for making the last 8 IF they get past Balla.
Balla will be disappointed after leaving the Belmullet game behind as they were in the lead on many occasions.

Breaffy by 5.

Group 4:
Charlestown Sarsfields V Garrymore
Charlestown empty the tank V Castlebar and just came up short may be to dependent on Paul Towey for scores. Garrymore means business to with a 9 point win over Davitts. Former Corofin/Galway Ciaran McGrath is a huge boost and the return of Jimmy Killeen (41) another bonus to have.

Draw

Davitts V Castlebar Mitchels
Colm Boyle went off Injury early last week so hope not to serious. Castlebar were brought back to earth last week as they narrowly defeated Charlestown so it's was a good test that should stand to them.

Castlebar Mitchels by 5

Finals weekend in Mayo:

Junior B football final: Achill v Moygownagh

Junior Football final: Cill Chomain v Islandeady

Intermediate Football final: Ballyhaunis v Kilmeena

Senior football final: Westport v Ballina

Junior B football final: Achill v Moygownagh - Should be a win for Achill, they have decent shape to the team and can get scores. Moygownagh have improved this year and hopefully can build on this for next year. Achill by 6

Junior Football final: Cill Chomain v Islandeady - After both teams semi final performances, they have both gone down in peoples estimations but only by a bit. Cill Chomain couldn't shake off Killala in a good dogged game. Islandeady were second best in there semi and still managed to get the win. So two physical dogged teams, both are very very defensive, Islandeady had all players behind the ball at some stages, so it wont be a great spectacle I don't think. I think Cill Chomain might have taken there eye of the Kilala game and cause it should have given them a bit of kick up the arse, I think they should win this. Cill Chomain by 5

Intermediate Football final: Ballyhaunis v Kilmeena - this should be a good game. Ballyhaunis always kind of come under the radar but are a very good team, they should have beat The Neale in the final 2 years ago, so they have plenty of experience. Kilmeena are flying it, carrying the momentum on from winning everything at Junior level, some very good players there. Hard one to call but Im going to go with the experience and say Ballyhaunis by 1

Senior football final: Westport v Ballina - another that will be a good game. Power and pace on both sides, and plenty of scorers on both sides. the weather might have an effect, as if its bad weather then the physicality of Ballina will be an advantage to them over a smaller Westport team. Westport will have to plan to stop Ballina from scoring goals as they have scored them for fun so far, with turnovers high up the field and runners from deep. If Westport can get all there talented forwards firing on Sunday then they will be hard stopped. I think, especially with the weather looking to be bad, that it is setup for Ballina to win this one, Ballina by 4

I have to say I thought Westport were as physically strong as Ballina. Their fitness levels very impressive. Well done to them on a first county title. O'Hora battled to the end but very poor return from the Ballina forwards in the second half. Evan Regan showed some glimpses and surely deserves another call up to county? I was surprised that the attendance was only 7000. Thought there would be more than that at a Mayo county final and actually looked like there was more.
