And because of that Dublin Hurlers are always going to be playing with a disadvantage. Until they can get the best Hurlers in the county prioritising hurling they'll win nothing .

Tipp have a a worse problem - Liam Cahill brought in a regime where he wanted no crossover between the two after we lost both minor hurling and football finals a few years back now. So pretty much all choose hurling and those who dont make the step up to senior are lost to the footballers generally as they didnt play inter county underage football and the club football cships is generally not taken seriously particularly at junior and intermediate level and they never get any exposure after underage. The likes of Steven O'Brien and Philip Austin (who played very little club football at adult level) for example would never have played senior intercounty if the old regime was in place back in their time. Its an awful shame and a disgrace really. At least in Dublin they can play both still - to the best of my knowledge.

It is hard for clubs in Dublin, demoralising in fact, but it isn't today's problem. It existed back when I hurled in Dublin in the 80's/90's. ExiledInWex (Dublin) - Posts: 1259 - 25/08/2022 15:37:06 2438685 Link 1 |
So the semi finals of the Senior 1 championship have been decided. Should be two cracking matches: Kilmacud Crokes v Ballyboden and Cuala v Na Fianna. Very hard to predict both games, I think Ballyboden have improved but Crokes will edge it. Na Fianna really struggled past Vincents and I think Cuala will be able to get the scores Vincents left behind. Cuala to win. bad.monkey (USA) - Posts: 4643 - 26/09/2022 20:39:13 2441971 Link 0 |
Na Fianna might have had a few more goals. Worked the ball excellently into positions but fluffed the finish. Burke was unusually below par on frees, However, had Vinnies been fitter - sounds like a ludicrous thing to say in this day and age, but true - and not faded almost completely out of game after Hetherton got the line it would have at the very least been closer. Would be expecting two quality games. Hopefully one might be televised..

The Kilkenny man I believe. Con got fed up of it himself in the end and wandered out field and got some nice points in the semi final against Crokes but too late to save them. If he's fit they'll be hard to beat. Might have been slightly unfair to Na Fianna as they've not hit top form yet and always seem to have big men like Rushie or Burke having an off day, If they get it together they will give Cuala a run for it. Chris Crummey and Cian O'Callaghan apparently heading off travelling for a year according to the Irish Independent. Good luck to the lads but a big loss for the new management team. bad.monkey (USA) - Posts: 4643 - 06/10/2022 10:10:47 2442943 Link 0 |
Great win for Na Fianna yesterday. Seemed to be on verge of another collapse for first 15 of second half but they dug it out in great part to masterful display by Rushie who won some ferocious ball when Cuala were hunting for goals. Yes it should be an excellent final, cant remember the same two teams in both the football and hurling final before? I didnt get out to watch the Na Fianna-Cuala game but was at the Crokes-Boden game. A lot of excellent young players coming through in Crokes - Purcell in midfield really stood out. For Boden it looks like time is catching up wth some of the older lads. They have been the backbone of the great Boden teams and Dublin for the past 15 years. They will be very hard to replace. bad.monkey (USA) - Posts: 4643 - 10/10/2022 13:58:25 2443405 Link 0 |
Hard to see Crokes not winning the final but would be good to see Na Fianna win a county title, given the strides they have made at the small ball game. ExiledInWex (Dublin) - Posts: 1259 - 10/10/2022 16:41:16 2443443 Link 0 |
Rushie not going to hurl for county next year. I suppose he was becoming permanent sub by this stage. Crummy is huge loss. McDonnell definitely staying which is good but there always seems to be some thing hampering a new manager from the start. BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3120 - 11/10/2022 18:13:44 2443621 Link 1 |
Every county will lose players in the next year or two with the catch-up of the travelling brigade post-covid. To be fair, the Dublin championship was poorly run. Wexford have run off both championships and while not perfect, it was very well ran and the games finish this weekend with all the football finals. The GAA can't win if they continued what had gone before. They had to do something for the club players, if that isn't backed up by their county boards then that is where the ire has to be directed Barney. Championships are finishing a couple of weeks earlier than usual. They were run efficiently by DCB in fairness with due regard for the traditional August break, dual players and exit of the county footballers. Lots of the better club players around the country chose to play in States, That is not county boards fault. Now players are choosing to use the time saved to travel! Split season is only reducing the prominence of the inter county championships and we will pay for that in lower interest from children who will be watching other sports at time GAA used to, and ought to, dominate the airwaves. Exiled, the Dublin football final is on Sunday! Wexford was run better in what regards? Their county team exited four months ago! BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3120 - 12/10/2022 12:47:15 2443728 Link 1 |
I think the split has been great in Dublin, having the inter county players playing more club games is great! The kids love going out to watch them. It could be tweeked by a week or two if needed. bad.monkey (USA) - Posts: 4643 - 12/10/2022 14:18:46 2443745 Link 0 |
Players going to the states for the summer is hardly a new phenomenon, has been going on ever since I remember so to link this to the new calender is highly disingenuous. From personal and family experience a club adult making a county final weather its senior, intermediate or junior will stoke interest for kids in that locality as good as anything else. Recent GPA players survey (87% with a positive reaction to the calender) should be the best indicator of all up to this point on the merits of the split season.

Going to go for Na Fianna to make the historic breakthrough tomorrow. BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3120 - 22/10/2022 10:50:29 2445010 Link 1 |
Desperate weather this morning, hopefully the pitch holds up. Too close to call for me, maybe Crokes just have that extra experience to get them over the line. It should be a realy good game. bad.monkey (USA) - Posts: 4643 - 23/10/2022 09:28:09 2445081 Link 0 |
