Kingston Gone: New Cork Manager

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

An interesting situation in Cork now. Do they stick with 'inside the county' when the pickings seem quite scant? Or do they break tradition and go outside the county for a non-Cork man? Some may say that they'd never do that, but technically they have already; John Meyler is a Wexford man, a fact that delayed his appointment as Cork manager for years.

Davy Fitz might get it. He's going well with the Cork camogie team and has undoubtedly used his time down there to make contact with important people.

I'd love to see Davy being appointed. I always like to see Cork hurlers being beaten (not their footballers, though), and one thing that would make that even better is to see them being beaten with little bitter Davy at the helm.

The look on Donal Og's face would be priceless too, if Davy is appointed before him.

Not sure Donal Og deserves it, what manager role has he had recently.

They should give it to Donal Og. It'd be a win win for them. Either he's a success or he fails and we won't have to hear him going on about it.

It would constitute a shock if Donal Og don't get it. However I think there are many long knives still down there for him. They threw the people who support him a bone by giving him involvement with the minors.

Davys dedicated army of detractors always struck me as being far more bitter than he is.
If he never wins another trophy I still think he can be proud of what he achieved as a hurling manager

Eamon Cregan won all Ireland playing with Limerick, and managed Offaly and Johnny Dooley to All Ireland win over his native county!

As a percentage its only a tiny fraction of 1%,and it gets even smaller when you consider he did it without the luxury of being from kilkenny, Cork or tipp.
Anyways, back to topic.
I'm glad Cork decided to stay within.

Yes, I agree. Pat Ryan will blood some younger players, and will most likely bring Wayne Sherlock on board . Both are all Ireland winners, and both involved in recent underage successes!

Football …Jim Gavin, Mick O' Dwyer, Jim McGuinness (substitute in 1992), Conor Counihan, Páidí Ó Sé, Billy Morgan… probably long list of All Ireland winners playing and managing!!!

Pat Ryan with Wayne Sherlock and Ben O' Connor, all of whom were associated with recent winning underage teams, are popular choices on Leeside!

You probably only need your second hand. Did Kevin Heffernan in football ? Mick O'Dwyer did. Paidi ? John Keane I believe in 1948 and was involved in the 1959 team. They were not called managers then. Davy like him or dislike him deserves honourable mention.

For Dublin, Dessie, Gavin, Gillers, Pat O'Neil, Heffo, Tony Hanahoe... In fact, in my lifetime there's never been a winning manager who didn't also win as a player.

A load have done it in football. Actually all the winning managers since 2010 have also won medals as players (except Fergal Logan). Would Heffo have been the first to do it in 1974? I don't think the role of manager really existed much before that. I know that in 1973 Limerick had 5 selectors, one of whom was Jackie Power who had won AI titles in 1936 and '40 with Limerick, but there was no real main man as manager.

Kevin Heffernan definitely! All Ireland winner and managed dubs in 1970's. Most famous Cork manager was undoubtedly Jim "Tough" Barry who managed successful Cork teams for decades all the way up to 1966.Also managed Cork in 1945 football win,and managed Limerick hurlers to all Ireland hurling success in 1934. Never played himself, but he quoted " You don't need to be a greyhound to manage greyhound's"

Johnny Clifford All Ireland winner playing and managing Cork, famously said "Cork hurlers are like mushrooms and spring up overnight " . Let's hope that this prophecy holds true over next decade, and Cork dominate hurling again!

Davy Fitz, I don't believe was ever seriously considered. He is too controversial and divisive. Donal Óg Cusack… similar. Pat Ryan is a good choice, and will bring a seamless progression from underage ranks. Dual players like Brian Hayes may declare for hurlers , and if Ryan brings Sherlock and O' Connor on board, we may have a winning ticket!
