When working properly it is definitely needed in hurling as it's much harder for umpires to see the ball but in football the calls should be easier to make

No I am not but they are some on here who want no improvements made. The sport has and will change with more technology. If it did not the game would be still played with 25 aside, peaky caps and a black thorn stick while having a smoke.

I have advocated for change since I first posted. I want a 2nd referee, umpires to be club referees at least, Hawk Eye to be used. But I think Hawk Eye should be checked on the morning of the match and if there isn't a consensus regarding the accuracy, it gets fixed before throw in. Second ref with TV replays if not on field. Only takes a second.

Exactly. Or a bit like the rugby "ref, I have something to show you and bringing it up on the big screen". It is not that hard.

Hawk eye is as relevant to most gaelic games as sky tv is to others, there is something like 30 counties that most likely will never experience the use of Hawk eye, why persist with a fallible system that is only used in HQ

Video online shows comers point was a point and Hawkeye may have got it wrong. I think a lot of people will have been at games where are Hawkeye cartoon looks very different then what they saw in real life Kew (Galway) - Posts: 100 - 30/07/2024 10:52:17 2562899 Link 2 |
I don't see the need for hawk eye in football matches…( there is a good case for it to be used in hurling ) I have umpired at hundreds of GAA matches ( football )and never had any difficulty seeing if a ball went between the posts or not … it's just a cop out for these umpires who are mates of the referees..Get proper officials to do umpiring… WAKEY up sleepy GAA….

Just a question. Is hawkeye checked and calibrated on All Ireland final morning or how does it work? How do they calibrate it and how do they know it's working properly?Just interested to know. Alwaysencourage (Galway) - Posts: 369 - 30/07/2024 12:03:01 2562944 Link 1 |
It should be. But technology can fail, sometimes when you need it most. link GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 7651 - 30/07/2024 12:23:10 2562953 Link 0 |
This seems very flawed for football. It's actually crazy the have one system for two different types of game.

Hawkeye is completely flawed when a ball/sliothar is above the goalpost. If a ball, as it does, hit an upright/goal post and goes over the bar it is a point but in Hawkeyes view this would be a NIL beacause it has hit the upright. Comers looked in the last day but was given as a NIL. As we remember with Shanes free 2 years ago, Hawkeye makes mistakes and very clear ones in that case!! Every cartoon it draws up shows the ball hit the post. what are the odds of that ? It seems like they are just saying anything close will be shown as the ball hitting the post. It would be interesting to see how many times the fake cartoon posts were hit this year

Rule is ball must be between the posts Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 1913 - 30/07/2024 14:37:43 2563016 Link 0 |
You are right about the hurling… if a goalie puts his hurl above the bar to stop a point going over and the umpire calls for Hawk Eye to intervene it will always give a point as it can only determine if the ball is between the uprights but can't determine if it's actually gone fully behind the crossbar… It's a totally over expensive system that the GAA have great faith in despite all its flaws and failures…..

I'm not sure I trust the technology but as regards the graphic on hawkeye showing the ball as hitting/going through the virtual Post and indicating "níl", that is the correct call. Similarly if an umpire (with no hawkeye) watches the ball and judges it as having gone over the post, the call is wide.

When umpiring football and the ball goes directly over the post and not to the outside of it, I always call a score as there is no way of saying if it hit the post that it might well have gone over anyway… I would side with the guy who got his shot away and it was that close…. Think of the Armagh point that went over of the post … if he kicked it higher and it went over the post hawk eye would have called it wide and Armagh might not have won… It's a flawed system
