I'd say if Putin had of offered to withdraw 2 and a half years ago Zelensky would've very happily made a peace deal without Trump.

Putin has no intention of withdrawing. What he has now, he will hold. I find it difficult to see what Ukraine are getting in return for this deal on rare minerals. I can't see Trump reversing on the aid embargo.

I think what rubs everyone up the wrong way here is the current US administration making demands on Ukraine and the narrative is that's it's their fault. Nothing about Putin? Again today's he's referring to Canadas PM as a governor. Total disrespect to friendly nations. As for the US providing protection to Europe since WW2, well that was an arrangement that suited the US during the Cold War. American power and influence in Europe and the east. As America retreats towards isolationism I believe an EU military alliance will happen and is needed. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11477 - 05/03/2025 15:32:11 2594904 Link 0 |
Nearly all the viewers would be people who voted for him Would be a bad job if the lad's own party didn't support him now wouldn't it? Really he should've had greater support tbh.

That was a 2 way street. Europe provided protection to the Americans also.

Whatever about American tariffs what we and our Gov should be concerned about is our own country, the Americans will be fine. Tirchonaill1 (Donegal) - Posts: 3098 - 05/03/2025 16:40:38 2594914 Link 3 |

The population of the EU is 440 million. Add in the UK and its over 500 million. The population of the US is 340 million. The gdp of the EU is 20.2 odd trillion dollars. The gdp of the USA is 27 trillion. The gdp of the UK is approx 3.2 trillion. The EU doesn't need Trump, if it sorted out it's own defence spending. And while the Americans and the Russians have proven themselves not to have the word of a dog when it comes to international agreements like Budapest, the other guarantor was the UK, who are only now starting to talk about really trying to uphold their end. Germany especially was hamstrung for years by restrictions placed on it after WW2. It should really be spending more. At the same time from a personal point of view I'd rather Ireland didn't get involved in any EU army. We are supposed to be a neutral country. The French never got off their boats in Kinsale ;-) Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 15047 - 05/03/2025 17:00:30 2594921 Link 0 |
It was a CBS Poll not Foxnews or some other semi pro Trump site. But hey here's CNN for you: President Donald Trump's address to a joint session of Congress was broadly well-received by Americans who watched it, according to multiple polls after the speech. CNN found that 69% of watchers had a positive reaction to the speech, with a plurality, 44%, having a "very positive" reaction. A survey from CBS News and YouGov found a similar result, with 76% of watchers reporting having a positive response. Trump2020 (Galway) - Posts: 2384 - 05/03/2025 17:32:25 2594928 Link 2 |

The US was already despised in half the countries around the world. Trump's alienating the other half pretty quickly. Putin must be laughing his head off.

I don't think you should be in any country if you don't have a visa/work permit to be there, I know I wouldn't do it but I think the Americans are more worried about protecting their southern border at present. I don't think you'd be let in through JFK or O'Hare without proper documentation the way the undocumented seem to be able to arrive into Ireland through Dublin airport. It was a CBS poll that was done on people who watched the address. The link you put up specifically states that most people who watched the address would've been people who supported him. Maybe best read articles first that you put up links for?

Trump is not trying to broker a peace deal, he's trying to get Ukraine to surrender. The difference isn't subtle.

Do you any info/figures/references on "undocumented" people coming through Dublin Airport?

China agrees with you. But hey if the USA is so "despised" as you seem to think then why are so many trying to get IN vs OUT of the USA? I mean Trump is having to build a WALL to keep them out.
