Replying To yew_tree:  "Yes he is. Played in a challenge game last sat v Westmeath I'm told. The Mayo team that played Galway in the air dome later that evening was "another" mayo selection. Either way challenges/FBD can be taken with a large grain of salt."
he's a quality player great to see him fit again.

Replying To thelongridge:  "Where in Mayo are Tooreen club, and how many hurling clubs are in the county? Mayo are better known as a football county, but I recall a Joe Henry hurling with Mayo. Was he from Tooreen?"
Joe was indeed from Tooreen. It's just outside Ballyhaunis who also hurl senior. Castlebar & Westport do too but are the poor relations, although defo making progress at underage. Ballina, Claremorris, Caiseal Gaels & Ballyvary also making strides in development.

Tooreen man indeed one of Mayos best ever hurlers. Was P. E teacher in Castlerea for a number of decades recently retired but still coaches the school basketball teams which has had plenty of success over the years. He married a former Roscommon camogie player and his son is a decent hurler also.

All change in defence, big test for the new lads, can see Mayo be very defensive to protect them, and to add to it a new goalkeeper so that doesnt help but its what you want this time of year, to try new players and see if they are up too it.
4 mid fielders named to start so that tells you what too expect. Galway could try same tactic for there kickouts of isolating Comer and putting it out on top of him so they will have too have that covered.
Galway might try Comer and Tierney inside and go with high ball in, cause that Mayo full back line is lacking height and strength and even the 4 midfielders Mayo have named they are not the biggest presence wise..

Could be a dour enough game if both teams are going defensive

Not a bad first game..intensity, workrate, tackling all very good, rusty on passing and shooting but weather conditions had an effect also.
All the news lads played well, none looked out of place. McBrien did well on Comer when he went on him, Comer had a good start but wasn't in the game much after that. Would have liked to see Finnerty stay on to test the defensive, Conneely wasnt up too much.
Good battle around the middle, Ruane and McDaid were the best there.
Forwards played ok, Donoghue was good even though he was getting pulled and dragged all evening by Kelly but it was a good battle for the 2 of them.
Orme tried but needs games, theres more in him, Carr def needs to up the workrate, excellent goal but went bit quiet after, bit like Comer, good start and maybe they thought they had enough done, either way Carr is frustrating cause he could do so much more damage but too easily drifts out of the game.
Great to have Cillian O Connor to come on, might be best used as a sub, give him 20mins and he will contribute.
Eoghan McLoughlin still needs to improve his kicking, great chance for a point and blazed it wide, such a great runner with the ball but needs to improve the end product
Reape i think was good in goals, couldnt do much for Tierney goal, but caught one or two in the second half and kickouts were good, wonder does Hennelly transfer mean he isnt in with Mayo..

Are you saying COC would be best used as an impact sub for the year? That's mad stuff.

Hennelly said in his interview he wants his Mayo place back again. Thinks his move will allow him to extend his career with Mayo.

No wouldn't be thinking about championship yet, league is very important for Mayo this year with all the new players coming in..Im not saying either Cillian will be a certain starter, will have to see how he goes in the league.

Thats good he still wants the keeper position, always need good competition for places..Reape looked a good option the last night though, Reape would be more comfortable in possession than Hennelly which is an advantage..if Hennelly could be more consistent with the long range frees then that would be a huge plus.

He's a nailed on starter for championship barring injury and rightly so. Tommy Conroy is the key to everything this year. If he comes back fit it opens up more space for COC and ROD.

Thought behaviour of Mayo supporters last weekend left a lot to be desired. Booing the Galway free taker and even jeered their own when they held on to the ball for too long!!!

Hennelly is by far our best long range free taker. Last weekend we won a free on the 45 in the 1st half and nobody even looked at the posts before taking it short.

He is our best option for long range frees, but needs to improve conversion rate, has the distance easily but can lack accuracy and if they are to win anything they need him nailing the long range frees, it is such an advantage like Kerry have with Sean O Shea.
A bigger issue is a free taker on the right, Orme not good enough on them, he might improve but still no option. Id still have Cillian O Connor taking them that side over any of the left footed options

Agree we still have no reliable left footed free taker but I would prefer Ryan on them rather than Cillian.

That felt like a defeat. Mayo had the game won but managed to throw it away. Some very questionable frees given against Mayo. The one at the end was well "engineered". That said it's a point and Kerry next up.

Some game of football in the second half. We were lucky to be just two points down at half time. Awful stuff playing it back and forth in front of the Armagh defence. We played some great stuff in the second half but not for long enough. Armagh were well worth the draw.

He was questionable throughout the match.
Where did the minute & a half come from for Armagh to tie it up. Conor Lane gave the Monaghan player a red card for something that wasn't close to what the Armagh player did. Consistency in refereeing is a high problem and not just ref to ref but minute to minute in the game.

Probably too many subs late on when we were in control but happy enough with the performance until injury time. Ref in most incidences got the calls right except the corner back Finn with the strike to Carr's face. If the ref didn't see it he shouldn't have given a yellow if he did see it then he has to give red.

Mayo happy or frustrated with just 2 points from 2 games this far?

Frustrated after we were 5 points up but sure we never closed it out so didn't deserve the two points.
