Think we will be stronger this year after last year's injury disasters. The league will be a tough battle and there's an interesting change where the top team will go to the final and the second and third teams will play a semi to join them. Seems like a good change. carlovia (None) - Posts: 1517 - 10/01/2022 13:56:48 2394392 Link 1 |

It almost always has been. Its a tremendous cship and should be marketed better. After another few months you'll have people saying most of them should be in the Liam McCarthy which does nothing for them and you'll have players who won't commit. This cship gives them a serious platform to consistently play quality games which preps them somewhat when they are promoted. Winning breathes confidence (obviously) and any team that gets promoted can be as well primed as possible for a go at the big boys. Wouldnt it be great if maybe TG4 could take on the lower tiers in both football and hurling? tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 4119 - 10/01/2022 16:04:16 2394425 Link 1 |
That's a great idea TG4 are brilliant with their club and underage football and hurling coverage.

Is it possible that Kerry are already seeing the benefits of playing in the Munster U20 championship? I know they've only been in it for 2 years, so I would have thought it would take longer to see more tangible benefits, but I'm not sure of the age cohort of this Kerry team (how many have been brought into the squad from the las 2 U20 teams etc). One game against a Tier 1 team is better than 5 games against Tier 2 teams. Hurling has struggled with this concept for years, putting glass ceilings in place etc. to hold back the progress of lower seeded counties. The target for Kerry this year is to make the Joe McDonagh Cup final. For the last two years, the finalists did not get a preliminary quarter-final. They will this year. Kerry could do with the profile of a home preliminary quarter-final. It'll be typical Kerry hurling luck that they will miss out on the final when this carrot is back on the table! :-( legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 7871 - 10/01/2022 17:12:13 2394441 Link 1 |
Have Kenmare a team-they have had one over the years anyway. Of course, Jackie Healy Rae was a fine hurler, with his native Kilgarvan and a Caman was placed on the coffin at his funeral. It was said in tribute, that 'he played it hard but fair'.

You nailed it there. It is not the team that breaks through but the follow up . It is not necessary to win under age but you must be competitive. If these fellows could hang in there getting decent results and there were additions coming that would make a difference. Waterford are around now for over 20 years even though not winning the big one (no god given right) and that is because of the conveyor belt. Last year we were probable the third best U20 and not far behind minor. Credit given to the work put in doing this. We used to take horrendous beatings at under age. Despite the football beatings there is a lot of work going on here also. Every team can not win the ALL-Ireland but what a breath of fresh air it would to have the likes of Kerry, Westmeath, Laois, Carlow, Antrim etc. not always a given to be beaten. What would Kerry's goal this year be if the glass ceiling wasnt in place?

I don't think that would have had much of an impact as not too many of them were playing yesterday but it reminded me of something. The Kerry minor hurlers last year stuck with Tipperary for a lot of the game before Tipp pulled away at the end. But Kerry were missing 6 players who started the year previous due to them being on the football panel! If they had them I think they could have beaten Tipp which would have been phenomenal. Kerry have a very strong u20 team this year it's be great if they could take a big scalp.

If it wasn't for Covid Kerry would still be playing in the B championships at underage level. The Munster Council wanted them in the A championship but the Kerry County board didn't want to. Said they weren't ready but in reality they just didn't want to fund the training etc it'd require.

Some of the top tier have no interest in changing things. You only have to look at when Galway were first looking at entering Leinster. Only one county was against it and that was Kilkenny. You also have to look at the endless play offs teams have to win to get promoted. Lets not forget Wexford once refused to play in a relegation play off and nothing was done. It's also not that long ago the league kept getting changed to suit top tier teams. oneoff (UK) - Posts: 1380 - 10/01/2022 21:55:49 2394479 Link 0 |
Say no more! Glad to see some common sense prevail.

They will be lucky to make the final of Joe McDonagh even.

Id agree with a lot of what you say but Laois Carlow and Westmeath were also against it but Leinster council thinking of gate receipts bulled it through with the support of not only Longford Wicklow and Louth but also Meath and Kildare.Of all the big counties Tipperary are always supportive always willing to help out with coaching.

Kerry's goal is obvious after the last two finals. In my humble opinion, if humble Kerry were to surprise the hurling world and win the McDonagh Cup against all the odds: 1a. Kerry should be promoted as the 6th team in Munster. 1b. The 6th placed team in Leinster should be relegated. 2a. The 6th placed Munster team in 2023 should be relegated. 2b. The 2023 Joe McDonagh Cup winner should be promoted as the 6th team in Leinster. Summary: One of Leinster and Munster will have a 6th team. The 6th team of the 6 team provincial championship is relegated. The McDonagh winner is promoted to their province. (By the way: Were the McDonagh runners-up to pull off a shock and win the All-Ireland, they should be promoted instead as a good GAA back door insurance policy!) legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 7871 - 11/01/2022 10:29:15 2394496 Link 0 |
Offaly had to take their medicine. Hopefully an acceptance that relegation does mean relegation!

To be honest I waa surprised that the GAA didn't change something to stop that. Remember Antrim never won the Christy Ring Cup to be able to play in the Joe Mc at the start.
