Replying To PowellJohn3:  "You were nearly spot on until you mentioned Athlone and Tyrellspass here, for the rest of the clubs i am uncertain, Neighbouring parishes will always have family ties to one place or the other. Listening to a few people Tyrellspass and Kilbeggan there a defo a few that are or are not in either parish, someone said Castledaly and Rosemount, i am uncertain if they even Touch one another parish wise ????, Athlone have multiple players who are not in the catchment but thats normal. Malachys another club because of Castletown geoghan do really well off as they have ballinagore, loughnavalley, in close proximity. The community Games years ago was the one tournament that had parish rule and was funny to see certain lads play with there area and play with a different club, Cant see county board change this how would they ?"
Town teams will always have a few players transferring in, Athlone currently have a good few not from the area; Scally is Clann na Gael as is Finlass, Lynn is from Longford, Mulligan and O'Connor are from Tubberclair, Shane Allen also from the Roscommon side but a few of those mentioned would have parents from the town.

Shamrocks currently have 2 new transfers in addition to a few from the last few years.

Makes it all the harder for the smaller clubs to compete but it's the nature of town teams.

What's the story around Heslin not being available , is he two minds about the year ahead ? He's a massive loss , could likes of Senan Baker emerge as a real star/leader for the coming year? Midfield a major worry, would McCartan go in there with Lynam ?

Heslin is abroad with work. People have life's outside football! He is also injured anyways.

He only asked whether he was available as he's close to retirement at that level after an exceptional career, the "lives outside football comment" was totally unnecessary, simple question surely should be met with straightforward answer.

Brilliant win for Maynooth University in Sigerson Cup this week, three Westmeath starters in Dan Scahill, Kevin O' Sullivan and Sean Leech. Defeated holders UCC and playing Queens Belfast next week in quarter final. Jonathan Lynam also featuring for UCD at same stage

It's great to see so many westmeath players playing sigerson. The standard of the sigerson is extremely high. Tus midlands had a few westmeath lads playing against dcu and senan baker involved with dcu. Danny mccartan also involved with TU dublin in the quater finals and fionn o hara named on Queens panel. Not sure what current situation is with Fionn but would be great to see him back involved with westmeath in the near future.

Charlie drumm also on UCD panel but hasn't featured yet UCD have a very strong side with Ben o Carroll & Theo Clancy yet to return .
I thought Scahill didn't start vs UCC but came on as a sub for an injury early on vs UCC. ?? He was poor against UL the week before.
Was like men against boys last night in athlone and DCU easily got past ait and well the scoreline flattered athlone too. Senan baker an unused sub last night for DCU and the Westmeath men for athlone in Whittaker Brandon Kelly and torpey weren't great either. Fleming and cooney both were injured.

Team named:
1. Daly
2. J. Smith
3. Drumm
4. Gonoud
5. J. Dolan
6. Wallace
7. McCartan
8. Connellan
9. A. McCormack
10. Lynch
11. O'Toole
12. Lynam
13. Loughlin
14. Baker
15. S. Smith
Subs:
T. Martin, Giles, K.Martin, Whittaker, Mulvihill, Harte, Scahill, L. Dolan, Forde, Leech, Dillon.

Remains to be seen if that team actually starts the game. Much of the same team as we would have seen last year, lots of workhorse type players around the middle.

Is Maguire injured or what's the story? Drumm a decent replacement regardless

Probably the strongest team we have without Heslin and Maguire. Drumm getting his chance. Nigel Hatre and Scahill probably feel they should be in ahead of Gonoud and Dolan but Dessie has gone with experience. I feel we are abit light up front we will need McCartan, O Toole and Loughlin to be flying. Big chance for Baker to be leading the line and taking the frees.

This game will define the year ahead!!

Usual set up with just 4 forwards. Lynam and Lynch will drop into midfield area. Can't see a very high scoring game and a lot of responsibility will fall onto Loughlin and O'Toole. Presume Maguire is injured. Drumm will be fine once he get's matched up properly. Though OSullivan from The Downs would make the bench but looks like his Maynooth team mate Leech gets the nod ahead of him. Some good options off the bench. I'm predicting a draw, 11 points apiece.

It will be tight match tomorrow. Heslin and Maguire big losses but time for other people to stand up in their positions. I still we have enough experience to get over Offaly July 2-3 points.

Any word from the panel? Has anyone been cut from initial panel since O'Byrne cup?

Offaly side has 9 starters under 23, they're missing Hyland, Cunningham and Ruairi McNamee, we're far more experienced but they're at home if that's a significant advantage, physically we look stronger and that might count in January, I'd expect a 2-3 point win

Great win today lads well deserved. All the negative comments these past few weeks have been put to bed . Going to Tullamore and taking 2 points home is great . Mccormack and Baker excellent fair play to management for getting it right now let's get behind the team and have a real go for promotion.

Two huge points in the bag, crucial away win against our neighbours. Lots of lads stepped up to the mark today. Delighted in particular for Senan Baker showing what he can do. Ray Connellan showed great leadership. Well done Dessie and the team. Clare at home next week will be as tough .
