The football equivalent of our beloved Katser.

Hard to credit the negative attitude from most on here to a brilliant facility. Yes it is in Mayo but is open to all in Connacht. Some of ye would be moaning no matter where it was situated. In many recent winters there has been hardly a pitch playable at times. Think if you ask any of those present for the Sligo/Leitrim game including players, mentors, officials and spectators whether they would have preferred to be outside in the cold, wind and rain they'd have told you to get real.

Anyone have any news on Galway and Mayo panels for game on Friday, played indoors with no wind or rain and a dry pitch it should be like a Championship game.

Wrong that the game is been played in prenty Park
We will have something like 8 debutants tomorrow all in the back 9.
Playing a indoor match will tell nothing of what these newbies are looking at the end of the month on most likely a dirty wet day in the Hyde against a seasoned side.
This is no more than prenty wishing to show off his hot air.

Mayo have named their team alright. No word on Galway team yet.
I don't honestly know who is or isn't in the panel even at this stage.
I know a few M-M players declined an invitation to join the squad (aside from any potential bans that is).
There is rumours of a current covid outbreak in the squad also, so will probably be a shadow side for today's game if that is the case.

Location and whether a provincial council should be building something like the Dome aside. It looks a fantastic facility.

I cannot get my head around the fact that they are say it was built for only €3.1m. I've been involved in clubs all my life and to build one pitch in a field can cost a huge amount of money. The land cost alone, drainage etc before you even think about the infrastructure involved in Bekan.

If that is the true cost I wonder why all county boards are not building them. Seems like a no brainer a a centre of excellence in every county. Seems to good to be true.

Would love to see a full breakdown of the cost from purchase of land to the full completion of the dome and the project plan made public. Larger clubs or County Boards could follow the template rather than re inventing the wheel. Also it would add transparency to the whole project (which is not a dig at Prenty.......I believe transparency is lacking across lots of aspects of our organisation and it gives ammunition to people to throw snide remarks as well as being bad governance).

Regarding tonights game - hard to know what it will tell us other than who are potential additions to the squads.

Connacht GAA already owned the land so I don't think that's included in the 3.1 million. It's still a great facility and only a 5 minute drive from the n17. That's a pretty good location.

I think the cost mentioned is just for the dome and pitch.
The land was bought years ago out of the soccer/rugby Croke Park rent.
Of course that should have been spent in the Counties too instead of the vanity Bekan set up.
3 Connacht Counties are/were in effect being run by Croke Park due to financial problems but instead of helping and guiding them the CC were off building their Taj Mohal.

All I tell you is the COE in Leitrim cost 2.8 mil and to be honest took nearly 15 years from land purchase to completion. I'm not even sure what it all went on as we only have 2 full sized all weather pitches, dressing rooms & an indoor handball court. So I would guess the Air Dome itself cost 3.1mil and god knows what other money was spent on all the pitches & buildings up there... all in all it probably was a 6mil+ project. There's not too many counties who could foot up 3.1mil for a dome or even justify the maintenance costs. The right piece of ground with good drainage or some sort of pump system to drain excess water would serve a team just as well. Personally I think the dome was a bit of a pet project but look we have it now and it will have its usefulness

I know certainly the larger counties could afford it if they git their act together.

A dome like that in Galway you would imagine could be used for concerts etc. The land alone in Mountain South that Galway bought cost well over €2m and sold again for peanuts. County Councils could develop them as municipal facilities to ensure they get enough use.

I definitely think it was a Prenty pet project but to be fair to him it looks like he delivered something that even if it is not something a provincial council should be doing. Shows to county boards, county councils, Colleges, League of Ireland etc what can be done. Imagine if every county council had one of these to be used as municipal facilities. Maybe wouldn't need to be on the same scale but it certainly shows the possibilities.

No tickets on sale for tonight. Looks like we won't get the annual tradition of Mayo fans booing free takers in a pre season competition and the rest of Connacht wondering how sad their lives must be

The Dome is paid for already from Rural regeneration and development funds, Croke Park and Connacht GAA money.

'Sold on the idea from their travels, which also included a trip to Queens Park Rangers in London, they began funding the €3.1 million required, €2.1 million deriving from the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund, €700,000 from Croke Park funds and €300,000 from money left aside by Connacht GAA with the project in mind'.

Well Larry McCarthy seems to be in favour anyhow... I think he wants every province to have one anyhow. Certainly I think the next one (or even two) should be built at Abbotstown as a shared facility between the IRFU / FAI / GAA / Cricket Ireland and anyone else who can contribute & utilise it. It's still hard to see how some of the bigger counties could fund a facility on their own without provincial/ central council assistance... Dublin have plans to spend millions on Hollystown & The Spawell, Cork havent got a pot to **** in... Tyrone spent 8mil on their own COE... Mayo are still struggling to pay for the refurb to McHale Park. Maybe some of the hurling counties like Limerick, Tipp & Kilkenny could afford a project like this but you'd have to wonder. I certainly could see the value of a facility in Limerick which again could be shared between the colleages and other sporting organisations. I don't subscribe to the idea that every county needs one.

I dunno if you have looked at a map of the province but Galway city isn't very accessible to someone in Leitrim for example. It should have been built in the centre of the province in Roscommon somewhere perhaps, if they could find land it wouldn't sink in.

Galway city and accessible should never be used in the same sentence.

The dome itself is a good idea. The location is a farce and ive no idea how the rest of the counties went for it.

Somewhere in east Galway or South roscommon near the motorway was the obvious location and close to the main population base of the province. Not a hovel in the middle of nowhere.

The highest performing team in the province consistently across all age groups are the Galway hurlers. While not strictly Connacht council they should've been considered as one of the main tenants. The location has frozen them out completely. The Galway camogie teams are second, again frozen out
