Greatest Midfielder

Replying To Eddie the Exile:  "Midfield is all about the partnership.
A draught horse paired with a thoroughbred always seemed work best. Tohill and McGilligan a classic example"
True enough. The sad thing about the great partnerships midfield though is the hard grafter never seems to get the same kudos as the other guy.

Still prefer his club mate, Sean Cavanagh but would have been some partnership.

Yes Saynothing. Because Cavanagh was such a super forward its often forgotten that he was a brilliant midfielder

I always thought that much of Jack O'Shea's greatness could be attributed to his partner Seanie Walsh, although it would be unfair to describe Walsh as merely a grafter. His consistent excellence around the middle allowed Jacko to do his stuff all over the field, safe in the knowledge that the midfield house was being very well minded.

Obviously bias as most of my life have attended games in ulster tbh, I know there's been a few mentioned already out of ulster but I would rate Stephen king and Dermott McCabe out of Cavan, P mcginnity and P Brewster from Fermanagh, P mcgrane Armagh and also loved watching willie joe from Mayo.
All classic drive it on midfielders who would put the head on the line everyday.

I see on balls. Ie they picking the best midfielders over last 50 years. Selectors are Oisín McConville Peter Canavan and John ó Mahony. Jacko Shea was voted in automatically and Fenton his partner slightly ahead off Sean Cavanagh.

Well there is an element of truth in it. For a midfielder to roam all over the pitch the other has to mind the house. Seanie Walsh was a super fielder. There is an iconic photo of him in croke park outfielding Brian Mullins and he is a few feet over Mullins who leaped high too. Seanie also a very good forward centre back and full back.

All above midfielders well worth a mention ,i have to add in Greg McCartan,a total powerhouse ,and could kick 50s with either foot

Two excellent midfielders. Dunne was only a young man in 82 and Tomás like all the Connor was class.

Another man you'd pay to see was the brilliant Enda Muldoon. He's a big Tyrone supporter at heart we'd have loved to have him.

Replying To Greengrass:  "Mick O Connell was at the end of his time in 1972. That's the main reason he was eclipsed in those games. Mick O Connell in his prime was a better player than Willie Bryan . Mick O Connell played in his first All Ireland final in 1959."
Mick O' Connell great player, but played game on his own. If Kerry were winning, Micko was icing on the cake. His direct opponent in 1968 All Ireland,Colm McAlarney, won man of match award. Colm has stated that Micko had no interest in marking anyone. Jack O' Shea in contrast, had terrific football ability coupled with a warrior spirit, and to my mind was greatest midfielder. Of today's crop, obviously Brian Fenton stands out!

Paddy Keenan gave 12 great years to the Wee County cause. What a player and what a leader. Louths only All Star and very very unlucky not to lift the Delaney cup for Louth in 2010.

Paddy was a brilliant footballer and it's a pity he didn't win a leinster, is he still playing club? Or involved with management?

Mickey Quinn of Leitrim was one of the best around in the 80s/90s.

Obviously not as talked about s he didn't have the success of the boys from Kerry/Dublin etc. but could hold his own with any of them.

He is still playing with his local club St Pats in Lordship in North Louth. He is a Gent off the pitch as well.

Sound Ollie, I'm glad things are going well for Paddy and he's still playing away with the club.
