Parish Rule

(Oldest Posts First)

See that Damien Cahalane was playing for Castlehaven of West Cork at the weekend in the Cork SFC final against St Finbarr's in Cork City whom he plays hurling for.

Isn't that a major relaxation of the parish rule?

Should be grand once Castlehaven haven't a senior hurling team?

The Cahalane thing was mentioned in a different thread a few weeks ago. Somebody there posted this reply:

St Finbarr's is their home club, there's a by-law in Cork that allows players to play with their father's club. Think they play football with Castlehaven because their dad played into his 40s and was travelling down for training, so it made sense for them to go with him.

What exactly is the parish rule?, is it in place in every county?, in Meath I know parishes often have 2 clubs who play against each other in one code or the other. I'm fairly sure there have been situations where players, playing for the 2 separate clubs in a parish play against each other in one code but maybe play together for one of the clubs in the other code (often say hurling clubs pick up players from adjoining football clubs and players from the hurling area play with one of the adjoining clubs).

The so-called "parish rule" is a minefield as it can be subject to a whole raft of local by-laws. What applies in one county doesn't necessarily apply in another.

If you played underage for a club you can continue, no matter where you live I believe. Otherwise, lads would have to change clubs when they move for work reasons etc.
Castlehaven have no hurling club, so they can choose to play for st finbarrs, as local to where they live. Mark Collins does the exact same.

He can play with whomever he likes. He grew up in Bishopstown. How, he decided that he wanted to play hurling with St Finbarrs and football with Castle haven.

If he joined Bishopstown and played underage with them, he would be allowed to transfer to Castlehaven (father's club ) at ant point. He would NOT Be allowed to move to St Finbarrs without either waiting or some other extenuating issue.

Perhaps people conflate issues but people are allowed to join whatever club they want at underage level. It doesn't matter where you live.

Gweedore footballers can play hurling for Dungloe and come up against them in football. I'm sure Templeglantine also provide hurling for Abbeyfeale and Athea. I know of relatives who played for Athea and Templeglantine.
