For many years now I haven't taken All-Star awards or nominations very seriously. However, I've just looked at this year's list and was amazed to see that, alone among the top hurling counties, Galway received no nomination. I know they had a disappointing championship after a promising league campaign but does anyone seriously believe that not a single Galway player was worthy of a nomination? In particular, I find in incredible that Conor Whelan was overlooked. Apart from Cian Lynch, is there a better forward in the country? Even on days when Galway struggle, Whelan consistently delivers a good performance. midlands (Westmeath) - Posts: 541 - 08/10/2021 10:58:09 2384872 Link 0 |
You are correct Conor Whelan is a quality player but I think there is a number of players you can put up along side him. Arron Gillane, Pat Horgan, TJ Reid, Jason Forde, Bubbles, Seamus Flanagan. The league was somewhat of a non event with not a Final being played so do not see much of an issue without a Galway player not being picked Southsham (Limerick) - Posts: 738 - 08/10/2021 17:44:26 2384950 Link 0 |

Surprised that Danny Suthcliffe got a nomination. Wouldn't have been my choice if any Dublin player was to get one. BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 2524 - 10/10/2021 12:42:59 2385099 Link 0 |
He's a top class player and one of the top 6 in the country but he didnt have a good year by any means. I specifically remember a league game where he got his first touch after 68 mins. There were certainly other forwards not nominated who were ahead of him this year. Additionally when you lose all your games its very unlikely you'll get a nomination. For me the likes of himself and Concannon were disappointing this year, where both probably were deserving of all stars last year. Certainly Concannon was. tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 4119 - 12/10/2021 09:52:47 2385313 Link 0 |
Personally I thought Sutcliffe was superb this year. He chipped in with 2-3 points in every game but got through an incredible amount of work and for me it was possibly his best year in a Dublin jersey.

I think there is general agreement that neither Galway , in general nor Conor Whelan in particular, deserve an All Star. But there were 18 forwards NOMINATED. Surely Conor Whelan was in the top 18 in 2021. anotheralias (Galway) - Posts: 840 - 12/10/2021 10:43:11 2385325 Link 0 |
