Replying To Dheen:  "Meath beat Wicklow in minor by 3 points. We beat Wicklow by 49 points last week, I hope our lads treat this game with Meath next with the same respect as the Wicklow game."
if we are to judge by head to head results in the group , westmeath would be looking to trounce every team in the group because offaly only bet meath by 3 and antrim by 6. but you cannot do that and be complacent, wicklow must have upped their morale and performance immeasurably for the meath game, meath had about 7 different starters in the game also from the offaly game.

Unlike a lot of lads here I was in Navan. This Meath team are decent. They beat us in minor 3 years ago a lot of the same team playing yesterday. As for us the 5 lads on senior panel have trained 3 times with the 20s. That was very evident yesterday. Very individualistic. We were poor no doubt about it. But if we beat Derry in Cusack Park we go through. Let's not bury the boot in players and management just yet.

That was my point, I hope we don't look at other results and become complacent, our u20s were complacent and thought things were just going to happen for them and ended up drawing. Same team pretty much that hammered Meath last year, bet Laois and lost narrowly by 4 points to Wexford. Yesterday was a combination of being complacent, taking Meath for granted and playing as individuals. Hopefully the minors learn something from that but I know their management team of Corrigan, Kennedy and Dooley won't let that happen, they never eased off the gas last week vs Wicklow no matter how far ahead they were which was a good sign early doors.

There's no one burying the boot but you're talking about Meath's quality and whether we can beat Derry, these are tier 3-4 counties, the expectation with this group based on last year and the quality of panellists is that we'd be in contention for a Leinster semi final place and challenging the likes of Dublin, Offaly, Wexford etc. On yesterday's display we're nowhere near that level, maybe we were complacent

No one is putting the boot into anyone. The reality is we were nine points up, were outfought, outplayed for the next forty minutes by a team we should be beating comfortably if we have any ambitions beyond a quarterfinal.I was in Navan and lets get real on this display that is not going to happen. It was very disappointing but let us hope that like the footballers v Sligo and Down we improve.

Meath didn't have the quality we had on the ball, you could see that but they definitely outfought us and the home crowd got behind them. The ref denied us some obvious frees towards the end which Williams would have slotted and we'd probably have won by a point or two but it wouldn't have done anything for us. Better that we drew and serves us as a warning not to be complacent going forward. I feel management got it wrong with positions, Rhian Holding had a super game in midfield but I would have had him at centre back. Peter Clarke should have been at midfield. McCormack at full forward. We looked very unbalanced yesterday. I presume Josh Murtagh is injured, I'd have him at full back behind Rhian Holding at centre.

Maybe I was watching a different game but rhian holding was playing centre back with Brian McCabe at midfield?
I thought daire smyth was excellent in the first half. I agree Peter Clarke should be out at midfield. Conor gaffney didn't have as much of an impact as I would have thought, full back line was very Shakey and I think this may be a place teams can get at.
What role was Peter Murphy playing?
Conor heffernan was very quiet but then again the 6 forwards as a unit didn't function well together

I thought he was around the middle of the field a lot but your probably right, either way he needs to be centre back all the time. I actually think Fortune should play him wing back instead of Craig in the Joe Mcdonagh, big strong powerful player and excellent under the high ball.

agree 100%.Gaffney must play in the full back line from now on with Peter Clarke midfield. The team lacks balance. We have too many chiefs in the forward line not enough soldiers.Maybe bring someone like OReilly or Darragh Mccormack to centre back.

Holding was at 6, not midfield and played well. Gaffney seems to be a better corner back but it's only 1 game. Meath fought like dogs in the 2nd half, that was the main difference. Players need to adapt when the game plan isn't working, there's only so much can be done from the line. And the senior lads are with the u-20s more than what another poster said, not just 3 times, poor misinformation. I thought the corner backs were only middling, and management needs to look at the stats and see where the scores and frees came from. We done just enough to win it, we got screwed in the end.

Yeah we definitely got screwed towards the end and should have won by a couple of points despite the poor performance.
Your right to highlight the corner back positions, we conceded a lot of frees from there. Josh Murtagh will hopefully be back the next day and he should be at full back, then play Jack Murtagh and Conor Gaffney in the corners. It would tighten things up a lot. We blew them out of the water in the first 15-20 minutes and the silly frees we conceded allowed Meath to grow in confidence and once it turned into a dogfight in the second half we didn't want to know about it. A lot of lessons learned. Surely won't be as complacent after this.

Has anyone been to any of the club league games yesterday, very hard to find results

Several of the posts here give the impression that Meath are supposed to put up a decent performance and then concede gracefully to our neighbours so it's great to give them a bit of a jolt now and again. Thankfully the boys grew into the game and deserved their draw at least.

I wouldn't quite say that. There's a general feeling on the west-side that Meath always put in their best performance when up against the Maroon. I would never be complacent against any Meath side, local derby and all...
Definitely some great hurlers over in Meath.

Lets be fair Westmeath were hot favourites and we expected to win so clearly we are disappointed by our display.Nobody could have nothing but admiration for Meaths character and play and I agree Meath deserved a draw.

There's over 20 hurling clubs in Meath so they are underachieving.

If the teams play again I'm quiet sure it'd be a very different result. Our lads went into rest mode after going 9 points up in the first 15-20 minutes and thought the rest of the game would take care of itself. pure and utter complacency. I'd rather see it in the first game, so they can learn from it quickly and they will. Meath played the game of their lives in the second half whereas we weren't at the races at all and it still ended a draw away from home.

We have 15 hurling clubs, all hurling clubs only. Meath have 22 clubs playing hurling, 7 are hurling clubs only. Meath are a bit like ourselves in that the traditional hurling clubs are in small geographical areas although Trim is a thriving commuter town now and only in recent years Ratoath are starting to move . Navan is one of the largest towns in Ireland with a population bigger than Athlone or Mullingar but only one club are playing hurling in the town. We do well what we have but how can we do more to develop hurling in the urban areas ?

Well done to the minors, another comprehensive win beating Meath in Navan by 28 points, following up on the big win the first day out. They showed the u20s how its done, didn't take Meath for granted and put the foot down when they went a few points ahead.
Well done to all involved.
