Whether it's a bad thing or a good thing the "super clubs" are the way we are headed. We may as well embrace it. I think that the GAA should also change the rules allowing second teams represent county. Maybe have a special competition for junior clubs but promotion to intermediate has to be from an inclusive competition, players representing 2nd/3rd/4th teams deserve meaningful competitions. As an aside 3 of the 4 x B teams in the junior finals are from massive clubs of expanding population. Mountbellew is not in that category being about 50 Km from the city and you only have to look at under age results for the last couple of years to see that.

Quietly confident we will regain the fox. We progressing nicely with a fair few young lads blooded. handpassking (Galway) - Posts: 438 - 17/10/2021 19:30:44 2385954 Link 0 |
Brendans came up from Junior...not Junior A.

Breandans are a youthful outfit full of endeavor but limited. MB are a team in decline . Can't see Brendan's making final they will be exposed in semi v Dunmore. Stripsandbanners (Galway) - Posts: 82 - 17/10/2021 21:57:09 2385982 Link 0 |
I don't think anyone who was in Duggan Park yesterday would describe Brendan's as limited. They've some fine young footballers. The one point margin flattered MB. Also bare in mind Brendan's won the game without Ruairi Cunningham who only played the last 5/10 minutes (I'm presuming due to injury)

Quality of Galway club football is shocking. Is it any wonder our expectations of the county team are in the toilet. Moycullen are very average and stumbling through each game. Killannin are no good. Corofin as we know can't produce an inter county footballer and Mountbellew bottle it on all occasions. Peggy11 (Galway) - Posts: 84 - 18/10/2021 10:40:42 2386016 Link 0 |
Would agree Donald. They have some lovely footballers and if they go senior it would be a spectacular achievement. I would definitely give them more than a fighting chance against Dunmore. northbouind (Galway) - Posts: 305 - 18/10/2021 11:39:24 2386041 Link 0 |
Another example yesterday of the Stars failing to close out games with a lead. FallenStar (Galway) - Posts: 426 - 18/10/2021 11:52:31 2386049 Link 0 |
Your not to far of the mark there peggy. The Brendan's match was of poor standard. Yes they had a few sweet footballers and should have beaten Breatnachs by more even without Cunningham but for me they are limited as a unit. But overall who on that pitch would really be at county standard? Stripsandbanners (Galway) - Posts: 82 - 18/10/2021 11:55:13 2386050 Link 0 |
Have to pull you up on this. Your statement is purely based on opinion. The facts would contradict this. Galway club football has shown itself to be as good as any county in recent years. From 2017 to 2019, Corofin won 3 senior club all Ireland's in a row. Each year their toughest test (by margin) came in Galway. Annagdown, Tuam and Mountbellew all suffered very narrow losses or forced Corofin to replays during this period. In 2020, the 3 time all Ireland champions were beaten by an excellent Mountbellew / Moylough team, who were in turn beaten by a strong Moycullen (who you've described as average). 2019 also saw Oughterard (our 18th best team by ranking) waltz to an all Ireland intermediate final. Keep in mind they had to compete against counties who may only have 8/12/16 senior teams. If the standard was that shocking at club level, surely oughterard would've found adjusting to Senior much easier. Even though they're a good outfit they were lucky to avoid relegation play offs last year with a narrow victory over Monivea. Our expectations are for the county team are "in the toilet" because of the poor quality manager in charge, not because of our club championships. Blaming the poor county team around unfounded negative claims about our club championships (which are great in my opinion) is slightly daft. That's a fairly ridiculous statement. No dispute of where Galway football is at at an inter county level but how can you justify saying that club football is of poor standard. Corofin are all Ireland champions and have won the last three all Irelands. A few teams have shown over the last year that the are at a level close to them ( Mountbellew and Moycullen in particular). And then consider that Moycullen have won 3 of their 4 games this year by 1 point and Mountbellew have drawn 2 of their 4 games you would have to say that there are a number of teams not a million miles away from Corofin.

4 points up after the penalty. They really shouldn't have lost it from there. Especially as they didn't let Moycullen in for a goal. Have some sympathy with them over a couple of the late ref decisions. One in particular looked more like a free for the Stars and the ref somehow gave it to Moycullen. I think Peter Cooke knocked the free over the bar so it was a big score. Super winning point from Cooke with the last kick of the game in fairness.

Moycullen had more quality in fairness and it sets up a great semi to see who will play Corofin in final.. Watched the Tuam game, they looked unfitter and a little disorganized this year compared Cartons first two years in charge.. Belclare (Galway) - Posts: 904 - 18/10/2021 13:49:52 2386077 Link 0 |
A few late calls went the Moycullen way definitely. Most refs would have given Tuam a chance to equalise as the winning point was scored at the very end of the 3 extra minutes, blew up on 3:06. The full forward for Tuam was also very unlucky late on when he didn't take a mark five yards inside the 45. He gave Sean K some roasting.
