Everyone knows they've probably had the most talented footballers in the county for a long time but mentality held them back. They have no baggage in Leinster that has always followed them around in Wicklow. I hope they do well. There won't be a weight lifted in Blessington for a week! Now that the championship has come and gone, have we come across any talent to add to our senior county team? Unfortunately, some of our senior teams appeared to take a step back this year. A number of younger players across the board, especially from An Tochar have certainly put their name forward for consideration in my opinion. Goes to show the form lines of our U20 team last year is strong as a number of them performed well in their respective championships. For the first time in a number of years I saw a number of club matches in Wicklow. I saw most of the teams at senior level and those that I didn't see, I got report on the others from some reliable sources. My own conclusion and those of the sources I spoke with all say that the standard of club football in this championship was poor overall. There was no standout team. Blessington were the best team that I saw playing this year and it will be interesting to see how they fare in the Leinster club championship. They have a tough draw in the first round and thereafter. I didn't see An Tochar or any games below the senior championship so I can't comment. Of the teams I saw in the senior, I was alarmed at the lack of intensity especially in tackling the opposition. I would also point to a lack of conditioning of some of the players. I didn't think they were physically well conditioned. I agree that some of the talent from the u20 team did perform best and there is hope that these players can now setup forward onto the Wicklow senior panel and continue to develop. This is our best hope. Also, it proves that the way forward is to bring through players from underage teams and keep them on a pathway to senior intercounty fare. Bless of luck to Blessington tomorrow. Hope they can put up a better show than Barndarrig and An Tochar did today. Is anyone in Wicklow worried about Wicklow clubs inability to compete in the respective club competitions? Thirty year ago the clubs were competing for provincial honours, now it is a case of trying to put up a decent performance and maybe winning the first round - huge decline over those thirty years. Kilcock were overwhelming favourites in my opinion to win today. In relation to the Junior A it is anybodys game on the day. I think both clubs will be extremely happy with their season todate and hats off to them. Once county finals are over some people are happy with their lot and the focus and attitudes change. However it is not the county board's fault when clubs are not performing well. There seems to be a clear lack of ambition and know how at club level. This year's club championship was extremely poor across the board. If as a county, clubs are not functioning properly then results in provincial competition and at county level will highlight this and this is what has happened this weekend. One poster suggests that some clubs are happy to win the county title and celebrate, forget about the provincal. I think for a while now posters on here were agreed that Blesso were slumbering giants, really only short on self belief. Well, they certainly are awake and firing now. An Tochair - a very young team who will learn a lot from yesterday and according to enquiries they are putting in superhuman efforts at all levels at coaching and preparing teams. In fairness, many clubs are investing time, effort and money in their juveniles, not least Blessington. Barndarrig have that extra handicap, if you will, of being a dual club but they too have an exciting underage set up. I believe the clubs are, in the main, putting the efforts in. We're all quick enough to jump on the bad results in the club championship for Wicklow sides. Blessington's result was some going when you look at the odds the bookies had for that game. Probably as good a result a Wicklow club have had in Leinster since Rathnew beat Vincents? Hopefully the people of West Wicklow can get out to Newbridge and get behind them in a couple of weeks time. At full strength they can give Naas a rattle but I don't think they have the quality to win although I think Naas needed a fortune goal to beat Tullamore in the end. I read the match report and it did seem puzzling. However that takes nothing away from Blesso. Congrats to them and the best of luck in the next round. Wicklow champions have been in the doldrums for too long now. Hopefully 2021 is the start of the Wicklow champions getting back where they were - one of the teams that nobody would wish to get in a first round. For me, it should be easier to put proper structures, administration, coaching etc in relation to football. Once the county is up to scratch on the football front replicate the blueprint in relation to hurling. Currently we are mediocre in relation to football and horrendous on the hurling front.
