I see these - ridiculous in my opinion - top 4 and bottom 4 playoffs in Div 1 of the league are starting next week. What genius dreamed these up ? I was talking to a couple of An Tochair people over the past week or so and it seems as if their players' loyalty to playing for the county teams could possibly endanger their Div I status ?? It seems as if they have up to 8 players involved with senior and u20 squads and have been playing teams with little or no county reps. They only had a full complement of players for round 6 of the league. This has obviously had a knock on effect on their other adult teams. How can this encourage guys to join county panels ? Yes agreed not a fan of the Top 4 four, bottom four, then 2 cups given out seem strange. If they want a longer league maybe just paly league home and away. Or my option would be to start the season a bit later as there still a large gap until championship. For clubs like Arklow and Roundwood being down so many players due to county involvement, for me it is a good problem to have. These players are getting exposed to higher level of football and also gives the clubs a chance to find new players come championship. Both clubs should be safe in the league due to points they have gotten minus these players I had not though how this effects second and 3rd teams but clubs with high representation tend to have healthy numbers to fill jersey even if there under strength. The draw for the 2024 Tailteann Cup takes place tomorrow. Wicklow are in pot three alongside Limerick, Wexford and Longford. We'll have three matches (I assume) like last year: one at home, one away and one at a neutral venue. Based upon our two performances in the championship to date - a win over Westmeath and a narrow loss to Kildare, it seems that we can go into the Tailteann cup with some optimism assuming that players don't head over to the States or other destinations working for the summer. We've played six of the top eight seeds this year between o'byrne cup, league and championship. If the team can produce what they showed in the leinster championship then I think we have a chance of progressing to the latter stages of the competition. I think fortune looked rather kindly on us in today's draw ? Fermanagh are beatable and recent competitive games against Laois have been pretty positive - as with Carlow but Carlow are always capable of springing a surprise. We got a good draw. As you pointed out all the counties are beatable and of course there is never much between Wicklow and Carlow most days. I reckon it will be Fermanagh vs Wicklow (away); Wicklow vs Laois (home() and Wicklow vs Carlow (neutral); probably in Portlaois. It will be interesting to see what team comes back after the break in terms of personnel and attitude. The team hit the ground running against Westmeath after a disappointing league. I imagine the players and management were disappointed that they didn't get the win against Kildare as Kildare were there for the taken as proven in the league and against Louth last Sunday. I'd hope that the team can get out of the group and into the knockout stages of the competition but time will tell if they have the consistency to turn in performances and results on a weekly basis. A good start is vital, so the first match is important to build momentum.

If the official Wicklow GAA Fixtures & Results page is to be believed (not that it is any way a foundation of knowledge for anything up to date or newsworthy for Wicklow GAA affairs!) then there is the same old worrying signs emerging on the club scene with numerous walkovers being conceded at all levels from underage right up to Senior. The minors were very disappointing tonight So many chances squandered from play and from frees. The sending off ended the game as a contest with 9 minutes left. Wicklow were competitive throughout but never led. Louth had that bit more of a killer instinct and were far far more direct than the overplaying, continuous field basketball style of Wicklow. Good to read an honest assessment of the game. To me, these are all items that are down to coaching. Hopefully this can be sorted over the next few yrs as these guys progress to u20 and upwards. We are still off the pace needed to win a title - that is a fact. I see on another forum the headline was hard luck. Personally I have long since given up saying hard luck. Good teams make their own luck and this seems to always be beyond us. The best bits to take from this is that individual players will continue to improve with their clubs - and there are some very talented players in this panel. For football followers, it's all down to the Tailteann now.

The Louth tactics played a large part in the "overplaying, continuous field basketball style of Wicklow". If Derry can't break down Donegal when they employ the same approach, it is hard to see a minor team being able to - especially when a minor team has a shorter shooting range. It made for a terrible game. We hit the crossbar in the first half and didn't get enough on the board when we were in charge in the first 10/15 of the second half so it was another what might have been occasion. You won't have to worry about carlow at least. A load of players have left the panel since the wexFord disaster. And who would blame them.

Absolutely putrid stuff from Wicklow minors,I know first hand these chaps are afraid to make mistakes for fear of getting taken off. Too many defenders and not enough scorers and negative coaching are to blame not the boys. Hard luck lads.

I haven't seen the Wicklow minors play so I'll take what you say as you who knows more than me. What you describe is a bit disappointing to hear but this is the way that gaelic football is played now. This is the way gaelic football is coached, not just in Wicklow but most other counties. In fact, I would say that Wicklow clubs and county teams have resisted playing this way for a long time and are only adapting to this style of play in recent years. This negative coaching has destroyed the game of gaelic football, to such an extent that it has resulted in dire viewing and no atmosphere at games. You just have to look at recent semi finals in croke park. Jarlath Burns has setup a task force and their remit is to undo some of the damage that has been done to the game by coaches. This negative style of play needs to be removed from the game either through a change of culture or a change to the rules. I'm not saying Wicklow minors' style of play is to be applauded but supporters (in most clubs and counties) demand results by whatever means and this is why, this type of play is being employed by a number of clubs and counties. They'll tell you that they are in the results business, not the entertain business.

I was a bit unsure whether our display was down to us or a reaction to Louths tactics., from reading the posts. Either way, Louth are in the semis and we are where we usually are - also rans - for whatever reason.

You're reference to 'also-rans' and the reasons is an interesting debate. If you look at the senior roll of honour in hurling and football, you may be surprised at how little counties have won outside the top 2-3 counties in each roll. Even the roll of honour within Wicklow makes for interesting reading over the last 60 years. I believe that there are a bunch of good footballers in every county. I believe that most intercounty players are at a certain level of fitness and conditioning. Where I think the difference between winners and also-rans lies is mentality. Winners know how to manage games, sometimes in the past it was called the dark arts. Winners will do what is necessary to win. Winners have composure in key minutes in a game and will generally make the right choice or will execute a specific skill or get a vital score at the right moment. On the flip side, teams that lose don't produce at the vital moment, for example, Wicklow had a chance at the end of the Kildare game but failed to take it which is in line with our history. Doing the right thing at the right time repeatedly has to give players in counties confidence that they can do it again and again. unfortunately in our case, our players throughout the last 140 years, haven't done it right on enough occasions. Some team might do it somewhere along the line.

The first two fixtures have bee schedule for the Tailteann Cup - Wicklow play Fermanagh next Saturday in Brewster Park, followed by a home game against Laois the following weekend. The teams that are seeded in group 1 have home advantage for the early round which is an advantage. Fermanagh away is not an easy fixture to start with; I'm imagine that the Wicklow team and management will be targeting two wins from their three games in order to progress. It would be great to get a win in our first game but I think our best chance to pick up the two wins are Laois at home and Carlow at a neutral venue. Looking at the weekends results, are Eire Og the top senior footballing team in the county ? They drew with Rathnew earlier in the league. and beat them at the weekend. They really are on a roll.
