Agree with you. That's 2 very weak minor teams we have had in a row. We need to stop the rot or we will erode all the progress that was made over the last few years

No sign of round two yet. This is two weeks after round 1 was released meaning that players now have one week less to organise time off etc.

An absolute disgrace, never mind that it's the 17th of May and the league hasn't even started. The amount of concessions in the spring league show what clubs think of it. There needs to be a major shake up in sligo football but no one will listen. Likes of Dublin are halfway through their league and Mayo have 2 rounds played. Why are we so different that we can't even tell lads when they will be playing?

Our league should be well underway at this stage. Clubs have zero interest in the warm up leagues. They might have if they were played in March/early April. Club football is now reduced to 4/5 months depending on how you get on in the championship. I can see why there's no day or time for Round 2 of the league. The CCCC have to wait for the Sligo v Antrim game to be fixed first.

They could just fix all the games for the Friday evening, avoiding any clash and also let players enjoy the bank holiday

And when will your hurling games be played

They are normally played on the bank holiday Monday? I would fix them for Monday, no intercounty games fixed for Monday so guaranteed not to clash and gives dual players time from football on the Friday

Master Calendar issued months ago. To be fair to the CCC on this occasion I think the fact Croke Park can't even tell them what day the next round of Tailteann Cup action is means that the can't fix a day for the four divisions and from a CP standpoint, is really poor. You could plan around it once you know the day. I'm presuming I'm right in saying they haven't told county boards what day they will be played? Regards the Spring League, a quick scan through the different groups will tell you all you need to know. It's been embarrassing and I'd imagine a change will be made to calendar next year. johncreilly (Sligo) - Posts: 134 - 20/05/2024 10:50:09 2545790 Link 0 |
We had plenty of much weaker minor teams.

I see round 2 of the league is fixed for Friday evening. Looks as if the delay in fixing the county fixture has forced the fixture makers to go for a Friday in an attempt not cause a fixture clash! 11 days notice but possibly not a Sligo CCCC issue here. I'm not sure I agree with this post , I think Mayo changed things up for the Leitrim game and brought players back for the Sligo game , I understand one mayo lad was missing due to injury I love the line where teams empty the bench or changed it up at HT, I understand Sligo also made changes and indeed finished with 14 after having an injury and having already "emptied the bench" Northwestballer (Sligo) - Posts: 2 - 21/05/2024 09:00:35 2546043 Link 0 |
"Stop the rot " eoinog, Last year two players ( Rooney and Kenny ) left the panel late to play with Rovers, removing fire power from the team which could not be replaced, this year the team has been competitive but lacked fire power , while we would all like to see them win connaught titles every year that is not always possible and the prep looks to have been good as results have improved Northwestballer (Sligo) - Posts: 2 - 21/05/2024 09:03:41 2546045 Link 0 |
Exactly, stop the rot We went 53 years (I think) without winning a minor title and we had never won a title at U.20 or the old U.21 age group until 2022. We don't want to go back to those days. For the last 2 years at minor level we basically played Leitrim for the wooden spoon. I'm not casting aspersions on any of the teams or the management I know 2 lads left and went off trying other sports. That will always happen. Thankfully one has returned. We just have to try and upp our game again. eoinog (Sligo) - Posts: 1998 - 21/05/2024 11:38:09 2546110 Link 0 |
I think you're both right in a sense. We need to maintain the good work being done over the last number of years and not fall off, but at the same time, realise that a county of our size will not be able to compete for Connacht titles each and every year. We need a little bit of luck to compete with Mayos and Galways of this world. The big thing for me is to be matching them in terms of our Strength and Conditioning so to avoid the return to the days of 15-20 point trimmings. Stay in the ring.

I was at one Sligo hurling game this year and the attendance was as bad as most club games we'll see over the next number of weeks. I don't say that flippantly or disrespect these lads, but it was shocking the level of support. I've hardly missed the footballers in the past ten years but the drop off there too is unbelievable. What strikes me most, is the lack of children at games around the country. Once upon a time, it felt as if a quarter of the attendance was children from 10 to 16. Is the interest just not there? johncreilly (Sligo) - Posts: 134 - 21/05/2024 14:44:45 2546173 Link 0 |
