Completely agree on the point re lack of speed especially in the FF line. OBoyle was a great ball winner from last year's team which complemented Marren very well. Marren is obviously very skillful but has struggled so far to make the same impact. Josh Flynn would be a big help if he was fit. Anyone any clue as to when / if we should expect to see him? Donlon may be better moved to CHB as he takes on lots of shots but misses quite a lot of them which only keeps the opposition in games. I felt Management got it wrong subbing Niland yesterday, thought he was growing into the game nicely before being whipped off. Pressing Kickouts need be worked on a lot this week, as time and again we allowed Galway easy possession in 2nd half which when you're chasing a game is a killer. Lastly I'll say we seem determined to handpass the ball the length of the pitch before we'll take on shot. This type of gamelan can look slick at times when we get it right and move it at pace but it also means we have to work very hard for our scores. I'd love to see us kick it more into the FF line early to mix it up a bit more.

The strength of the Sligo U20 team last year was defensively and holding teams to low scores. Roscommon was held to 1-8,Mayo 1-9, Galway 0-12 and Kerry 1-8. Now last night might have been a once off but 2-16 was far too much to concede last night and rot started with a truly awful goal to conceded when leading 1-4 to 0-5.

That's my point about speed. Mickey Harte says that your best defender's should be your no 13 and 15. Last year we had pace with Flynn, Henry, O Boyle and you can put in Doherty as he was wing forward. Those 4 are gone (Doherty is midfield) from the forwards and we are not nearly as mobile. Last year we funnelled back quickly and broke at pace. The best example of that was Dillion Walsh punching the winner after a quick counter attack to win the Connacht final. This is a completely different team even though there's up to a dozen from last year still available. It's a big reality check to some of the morons that were spouting **** here 2 weeks ago about how great this team was going to be and favourites for Connacht. Our seniors should beat Leitrim. It won't be easy, the weather isn't promised to be kind, a heavy pitch, a vocal home support and we have injuries. It's hard to comment on the team that's named because it's unlikely that it's the one that will start eoinog (Sligo) - Posts: 1996 - 05/04/2024 12:30:19 2535803 Link 0 |
Looking at the seniors, Mullen is named at 6, he man-marked Beirne last year and did a good job so looks like a similar role on O Rourke. I'd expect a few changes all right and positional switches to the team. A formality but great to see Alan McLoughlin make his senior championship debut. All the the best on Sunday. Canice Mulligan, lee Duignan and Eoghan Smith making debut as well if team as selected...... should remove those green and white glasses there Sligoian!!

Won't be surprised if Sligo win on Sunday more comfortably than expected. Its a Sligo side who only recently beat Westmeath by 6 points and Westmeath won the Div 3 title and will be aiming to reach the Leinster final. Drax_the_destroyer (UK) - Posts: 282 - 05/04/2024 20:48:00 2535925 Link 0 |
Very strange under 20 Connacht Championship so far. letsgetgoing (Roscommon) - Posts: 644 - 06/04/2024 14:30:56 2536023 Link 0 |

Going by the conditions and the new surface in Seán Mac,tomorrow could end becoming a scrappy enough game. Surprised by the numbers dismissing Leitrim. Recent head to head says it'll be tough won. 2011 is in the back of my mind too, can't see past a 1 or 2 score game. Hopefully we have too much and the few former u20 boys get battle hardened. It is the old surface I'm afraid.Work on the new one awaits. Galway's annihilation of London who were competitive in the League, makes one wonder about the prize from a Leitrim perspective. We are way off Galway, even with a full hand.I know Sligo wouldn't see it that way. joeman123 (Leitrim) - Posts: 523 - 06/04/2024 20:54:20 2536098 Link 0 |
Ah right I see, thanks for clearing that up. Yeah, either Leitrim or ourselves have next to no chance against Galway but the rare days can happen. Leitrim usually always show up against Sligo though, regardless of form or starting 15, so I'm not buying the Leitrim supporters playing things down. Besides ye should be buzzing, momentum is going well and Andy should have ye revving. Tirerrill (Sligo) - Posts: 8 - 06/04/2024 22:02:53 2536113 Link 0 |
Momentum? We lost a game last weekend by 14 points and 2 of our players won't be playing because of the ridiculous rule around under 20s that totally screws over the weaker counties.

Have to agree. Its a stupid rule. And it does penalise smaller counties more. GAA should be trying to help rather than further hinder counties with smaller player numbers. But sure there's nothing new in that , Dublin have got preferential treatment for years.

Momentum yeah, getting over the line for promotion and getting quality u20 performancs and results. Sure ye beat Laois as well a few weeks back, so take it in measure. The u20 rule is ridiculous, especially when Leitrim has them integrated with the seniors like that. The 2 boys missing will take away much needed pace, but the bad wind and sticky ground will slow the game down in any case. Tirerrill (Sligo) - Posts: 8 - 07/04/2024 14:04:53 2536192 Link 0 |
Good win. Leitrim were very poor but they had a horrendous run into the game with must win games every week lately. I wouldn't be getting carried away, job done, move on. Galway in 13 days eoinog (Sligo) - Posts: 1996 - 07/04/2024 19:55:52 2536335 Link 0 |
You have to be happy with any comfortable win in Carrick, but it was a very poor Leitrim performance. Clearly playing back to back weeks, missing their full back plus other injuries, Beirnes absence, u20s mcnulty and foley unavailable (because of that stupid rule) showed they don't have the depth. I wouldn't be getting carried away. A lot saying Leitrim tactics 2nd half were very poor too. Sligonian (Sligo) - Posts: 1742 - 07/04/2024 20:00:48 2536338 Link 0 |
Sligo at home to Galway I presume on sat week. Hopefully a big crowd in the park. Expecting to run them abit closer than recent meetings. SuperSligo (Sligo) - Posts: 54 - 07/04/2024 21:08:12 2536365 Link 0 |
Salthill…the last time we played in 2019 it was Markievicz. Connacht final doesn't count.

Sligo gave Galway a walkover in 2020, does that fixture count for home/away? Hard to still know where we are, Leitrim looked a tried team, depleted by injuries but we look far ahead of them physically. Westmeath also who had a tough few weeks and weren't able to recover against Wicklow so either Croke Park needs to give a break to league finalists or teams will field only weakened teams in the finals. Despite a lot of negativity on here towards McEntee, another impressive win and he gave 4 lads championship debuts, so much for all those who says that he only stays with the tried and tested. muscles (Sligo) - Posts: 466 - 08/04/2024 11:49:46 2536528 Link 0 |
McEntee comments after the game was odd in regards to the current Sligo U20s. Drax_the_destroyer (UK) - Posts: 282 - 08/04/2024 12:27:17 2536543 Link 0 |
