Any new players on the plane to Abu Dhabi? ThroughTheGap (Donegal) - Posts: 56 - 05/12/2024 21:45:03 2582562 Link 0 |
Is it a team holiday or training camp or a mixture of both?

Its a full on training camp as far as I know

I wondered that myself. I'd say it's a wee bit of both. But, I'd say with the Revenue now starting to take an interest in County Boards, a holiday could be seen as a benefit that the players theoretically could have to pay tax on, whereas a training camp could be argued isn't a benefit, but a chore.

You are spot on.

Can imagine it's more training camp than holiday with Jim!

The Revenue issue is a very interesting one. The lads driving round in cars are now liable for BIK. ThroughTheGap (Donegal) - Posts: 56 - 07/12/2024 19:23:02 2582729 Link 0 |
The payment of coaches is a whole can of worms that the the GAA will be forced to deal with in the years to come. In Donegal alone the vast majority of clubs are paying outside coaches. Teams even at the at the bottom of Division 3 and struggling in the Junior Championship are paying outside coaches. You could count on the fingers of one hand the number of clubs that aren't paying outside coaches.

Just because a coach of a club is a member of that club don't be fooled into thinking they aren't doing it in a voluntary capacity. The vast majority are charging now. And the vast majority of those haven't a clue. Lets be frank about this, in our own county especially, club football is now get as many men behind the ball and break at speed. It's basically rugby league and the best that these "highly qualified" coaches can offer. They have been complicit in the game offering some turdid affairs. You'll see a lot of them being found out now with the new rules. peiledoir20 (Donegal) - Posts: 1066 - 08/12/2024 12:03:47 2582761 Link 0 |
I wouldn't disagree with you, a whole other issue might be how these new rules are applied. In many league games in Donegal there's a referee only with spectators or club officials taking on linesmen and umpire duties. Will a local man inform the ref that his own team has infringed the 3 up rule while play is at the other end of the pitch? for example.

I think an urgent review of the Irish Revenue gestapo is needed, possibly a revisit of their powers and what tax should or should not apply to. Ireland in recent years is being turned into the Soviet Union control the people mentality, with needing to provide reasons for taking cash out of your bank acc or Credit Union, last week we were asked for why we wanted $200 USD cash in Letterkenny. When asking why, "Monitoring for money laundering" was the generic answer. We have to pay property tax on a house we buy, and allow the government agencies to trace all money we earn and have already paid income tax on. Next we will need "papers" to travel by bus or train to the next town in the name of State security. Commodore (Donegal) - Posts: 1212 - 09/12/2024 09:09:07 2582851 Link 1 |
Why was this story in the National news? Are the Donegal the only county with players travelling abroad for warm weather training? It annoys me that a blind eye is turned to the likes of Dublin, Kerry and Mayo GAA, yet if any other County dares try to reach those levels, they get scrutinized and ridiculed in National media and basically singled out. Take the story about the privacy fence at the Center of Excellence, another example of a non-story becoming national news. How is this stuff reaching National News journalists? Wondering if anyone has a good story about coming home from Australia or somewhere else for the 2012 All Ireland final? Hoping to compile some good 'epic journey' stories for a documentary pitch. Thanks in advance, catherine SpaghettiCat (Galway) - Posts: 3 - 09/12/2024 10:21:57 2582863 Link 0 |
This a comment we have seen so much in the last 10 years. The Donegal champions have been beat consistently by either the finalists or champions and in some cases the All Ireland champions.

Just wait until they get their claws into the Club Lottos, the primary source of the wages for all the outside coaches. Now that would sort out the problem of a good few of the charlatans.

Some local based journalists regularly provide stories to national papers. You'll see their name online on stories in the irish independent or Sunday world on Facebook.

Maybe not news to some, but Finbarr Roarty, Eoghan McGettigan, Odhran McFadden-Ferry & Eoin McHugh are the other names alongside Michael Murphy who will be on the 2025 panel. Lockjaw (Donegal) - Posts: 9527 - 10/12/2024 10:18:16 2582981 Link 0 |
Any word on new additions? Finbarr certainly has potential, but the other lads are a known quantity and not as if they bring Croke Park experience. You shouldn't need to play through development squads to break into squad and team. They've identified that in soccer over the water. For most players, ability at 16-21 is not a particularly accurate indicator of ability at peak, but work ethic at that age is a marker for work ethic later. Plenty lads between 21 and 30 in the county with no county experience have consistently up-staged their inter-county team mates and opponents in club championship this year.
