Replying To Al_Maguire: "I think Jim has almost the opposite problem than in 2011
Then he had big players who could defend and a couple of savage forwards.
Now he has a team that can attack but only a couple of out and out defenders
That's fine in one sense but it means Gallen and mcBrearty have to do a lot of tracking back to help defend.
Galway didn't need to do that with their shooters. They had a big defensive unit that could handle the runs and out muscle us. They attacked us quicker sucking us backward. And then could use their half back line more efficiently. Whereas we were too slow getting the ball forward with forwards that were more tired.
I'm not sure trying to find another Gallen is the issue. Niall O'Donnell, Conor O'Donnell, Jamie Brennan all played little or no part. And can all find scores in tight spaces.
We need one or two more imposing defenders to give us more balance. And give the forwards more breathers" Maybe a Conor Morrison or Kieran Gillespie?

I know people in here are now focusing on club championship, but i was wondering, are there any realistic players not involved with Donegal that you think should be in the squad next year?
I personally think Ultan Doherty should be involved. He is young, strong, fast and a real proper old school defender, people in here say we need more defenders like that, so maybe we should take a look? Kieran Gallagher is also another big fella who should be in or around county but I think he's abroad?
I would think Luke McGlynn will only get better and bulk up in the off season, he is at a good club in Glenfin to develop and comes from a great footballing family. Hopefully he gets more of a chance next year.
Glenswilly are known to be a big man team, so is there anyone there that could help us out in Midfield or Attack? We have some big men already but I feel we are a little short when it comes to comparison to the other teams in the hunt for Sam. Maybe that young Marley fella they have?
(I have been away from Ireland for 5 years so I am not as up to date with the club scene back home apart from my own club)

Replying To eddieSize5Balls: "Does anyone think Paddy might step away? There were rumors he would before Jim came back He was subbed in most games and didnt start them all and by jesus he looked fairly upset coming off at the weekend He's going to be 31 now in a few weeks, still has plenty to give but i would not be surprised if he calls it a day.
Ryan is around the same age too but I personally think he will stick around at least until Jim is here. So probably 2 more years after this.
Rest of the squad is fairly young but I do think we need a few bigger men in there somewhere and the bench needs improved." What is infatuation with retiring players who are just scraping 30....? Look at the like of Paul Conroy for God's sake....Chrissy McKaigue, Fitzsimons, McCarthy and plenty others in their mid 30's .. Any quality player who still feels they have the desire to play is always welcome in my book . We have lost enough great players too soon.....

Yes and there's also the invaluable experience they can impart to younger panel members as well, the standards that need to be set and maintained etc
I have the utmost respect for Michael Murphy, for everything that he has given, and for his decision to step away...... But......
We were/are so close. Could he be tempted for one last hurrah? Use him sparingly during the league. There's no point in saying save him for Championship, because as he said himself, if he's in he's in. Play him at FF. He may not be the force of old but his presence so close to goal would still spook opposition full back lines and allow the likes of Gallen, O'Donnell and Paddy a wee bit more room to operate in?
People might disagree and say just leave him be. And to be honest I can agree with that viewpoint as well. But when there is a genuine chance of an All Ireland, what a way to cap off an already magnificent Donegal career? If it doesn't work out so be it. But my take on life is, don't die wondering.

I would love to see him back and I see recently he scored 3-06 in a club game. But watching him on GAA go he was very addement that he was not going back. Imagine if Jim went to him and said look Michael I really feel your the difference between a 2 point loss in all ireland semi final to this team going all the way..would he be tempted? I just wonder..

I'm of the same thinking as yourself. Fully respect his decision to step away but couldn't help wonder as I trudged up Philipsburgh Avenue towards the car at 6pm on Sunday evening what differnce he would have made even coming in for the last 15 mins of Sunday's encounter.
I see he notched up 3-6 in a league game last week for the Glen. There's no doubt he still has it. Looking forward to seeing what damage a fully refreshed MM can do in the upcoming club championship.
The over the winter, we can only hope..

But yeah, it may well be the case that he's made peacee with his retirement decision and that's that. Still though - maybe one last ask?!?
I would imagine that if Glenswilly go well in the Chanpionship he'll be at the forefront, so people will inevitably start asking what if... again...

I said that on another thread here a while ago, Michael owes us nothing but I think he stepped away too soon, but at the same time I don't blame him, he carried us for years through shambolic management I suppose he had just had enough of the bs. If we had him there the last day to come on for the 2nd half even I think we'd be in another final, throw him in at FF, the long ball option would have gave us a better chance to vary the attack, that free Gallen kicked wide, massive pressure on the lad I know but I think Murph would kick that over with his eyes closed, anyway we all know this stuff. I know if it was me I'd keep going till I was told I was no use to the team anymore, time enough to be sitting in a chair talking about the game, but we have to respect his decision though it's still hard to understand. The influence he'd have on younger panel members would be immense, he'd lift the level up another bit and maybe enough to get us the Sam Maguire again, what a chance we had this year. These chances don't come around often as we know, don't die wondering is right Lockjaw.

A bit early yet to be predicting anything with any degree of certainty but how do we see the various championships shaping up?
In the senior, until anyone proves otherwise, Naomh Conaill are the team to beat. Looks like Ethan O'Donnell and Eunan Doherty will be back and they just have serious know-how when it comes to winning Championship matches. The likes of Gaoth Dobhair, Kilcar and Eunans will also feel that with a good run and a bit of momentum they could topple the champions. Easier said than done though. It would be great to see teams like Glenswilly, MacCumhaills and perhaps an emerging Four Masters have a good cut as well.
The Intermediate will be a dogfight as usual. Buncrana look to be in good shape, but the likes of Termon, Malin and Milford will fancy their chances too.
In the junior, I think it will be either Muff or Convoy. If Conor O'Donnell was guaranteed to be fit, then Carndonagh may also be a threat.

I totally concur with what you're saying. Murphy is definitely the one that prompts the "what ifs" most. ...oh well... In general though, that experience and know how especially in tight games is invaluable. Think back to 2020 Ulster final, what we could have done with the like of Frank and Leo coming off the bench to settle things. I know Neil McGee's last year or 2 were curtailed by injuries but McCole without doubt benefitted from learning from him.

I think the Michael Murphy ship has sailed unfortunately, he is a powerhouse who can drive a team on and would definitely add value to Donegal in 2025 if he could be tempted out of retirement.
Otherwise we need a new inside forward, someone powerful who can play in front of goal and cause genuine panic in opposition defense. At the moment we don't seem to have many options around the County.
I think we need Eoghan Ban Gallagher playing at wing back in 2025 instead of corner back, but currently lack decent man markers at corner back to assist Brendan McCole. Stephen McMenamin would be ideal, but injuries have hampered his pace in recent years. Conor Morrison would be another, but like McMenamin, I think injuries in recent years probably limit his ability to play at Intercounty level. Ciaran Moore has serious gears, not sure if wing back or wing forward is his best position, but he definitely has earned a place in the team.

I think if we Murphy this year we would have won it. He would have been the difference and created more space for others as people have said.
I can't see him back next year saying that, a pity as he would offer us a kicking option. Ironically we have some lovely kick passers in the team but don't use it much.

I initially thought that when Jim came back Murphy would follow especially when rumours were going around he was up and around Convoy but it seems that was because he was involved with the under 15's development squad. After watching the recording of the game on the BBC you could see how visibly disappointed he was after the game so the passion hasn't diminished. He could definitely do a job but I don't see it happening. He seems to have a lot of fingers in different pies between working with both the BBC and GAA go. Plus his work in LYIT and a bit of coaching as well as club duty. Jim will require full on commitment and it might not be straightforward for Michael to take a sabbatical from the media stuff. Whether he's back or not we won't be far away like I said previously. Sunday will show everyone involved they're very very close. Good to read Ethan O'Donnell is back in the county as I imagine he'll get a call up. I was surprised Keelan Dunleavy wasn't involved this year so he's one to watch. We'll have a decent under 20 team who'll be well drilled if SPB remains. Of course Ulster is like a mini AI given the quality in the province but they shouldn't be far away and there might be a couple to step up.
