Nice to be talking about football on this forum rather than bickering with each other. Jim has brought so much positivity already, got the fans and the whole county behind the team. Green_Gold (Donegal) - Posts: 1903 - 04/01/2024 17:35:30 2518375 Link 0 |
These comps are challenge games, nothing more.

I don't think it applies if player is 18 within calendar year of competition as he is overrage for u17 in 2024.....but I'll stand corrected!

I'd be fairly sure the decision was made to play the u20s in the McKenna Cup and the Dublin challenge game was irrespective of that.

Well I suppose Armagh were within the rules doing what they did and that's the way it is, probably not wanting to meet us before the league I'd say. Good run out anyway and plenty of shooting practice, just great to have Jim back, there's a smile on peoples faces again and hope for the future, Jim will have us well drilled and fit and tactically aware for whoever we face after that it's up to the lads to give it their best. Tyrone should be a decent test at the weekend, looking forward to that now. Tirchonaill1 (Donegal) - Posts: 3001 - 04/01/2024 19:08:01 2518387 Link 0 |
No rule was broken. He turned 17 last year so he wasn't eligible to play senior football last year. A player has to be 17 to play senior but can't play in the year they turn 17.

We played an Under 21 team ourselves in the mc kenna cup not so long ago.

U18s are ineligible at senior inter county level. Leitrim got a wrap on the knuckles for playing an u18 in an FBD league game a few years ago. I presume Donegal will be sanctioned. Dan_Toal (Leitrim) - Posts: 244 - 05/01/2024 11:47:39 2518462 Link 0 |
As it only mentions Championship year..... does it only apply to SFC ?

Yeah didn't field a U21 side in 2013 as the seniors went on holiday?

It happened with Cavan also,Caoimhin McGovern came on against Kildare in 2020. Very slack that countries aren't aware of the rules. They be brought in the rules a few years to prevent burnout FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2822 - 05/01/2024 12:10:53 2518466 Link 0 |
Yeah despite it being young Armagh side (Still a physical side though), it was still a useful warm-up game and a good opportunity to give players a run out. All of the new faces were impressive, as were most of the established players. Tactically I was impressed, not only with the high pressing, but the attacking patterns, could be very effective later in the year. We will certainly be less predictable this year I think. I agree about Dublin and Kerry, Tyrone really should be in that bracket too with the amount of talent they have, but they just seem to have lost momentum since winning the 2021 All Ireland and a lot of players have dropped off the panel etc, they are patchy and inconsistent recently and have fallen below Derry and Armagh in the Ulster pecking order. Galway, Derry, Mayo are next, possibly with Armagh next, then Monaghan and Donegal. It's too early to know where Donegal will be this year, definitely positive signs since the return of Jim McGuinness in how they are performing, but we won't really know until we player Derry. Derry are back to back Ulster Champions and have All Ireland title ambitions, so that will be a true reflection of where we are, as they are a beast of a side. The National League Division 2 campaign will definitely provide early indications and winning promotion to Division 1 is the primary goal. I think we will see Donegal start to rise again from this season, just have to wait and see I suppose. Commodore (Donegal) - Posts: 1193 - 05/01/2024 13:31:13 2518485 Link 0 |
I suspect the pre-season comps are treated slightly differently and the same rules don't apply because Donegal used 11 subs during the game !

My understanding is with the return of club minor championship to the U18 age grade, that from the 1st January, what they termed as "decoupling" was gone, meaning it reverted to the old rules where 17 year olds were allowed play Senior football. And it didn't have a distinction between club and county. SouthOfTheGap (Donegal) - Posts: 699 - 05/01/2024 14:32:34 2518495 Link 1 |
Rule was changed at special Congress in November, motion 11 apparently.

Seen on twitter that Ulster GAA are meant to be investigating Finbarr's eligibility. Don't see why he couldn't play senior football as he's overage for u17, unless he's meant to not play a year of football because he was born 6 days too late NPadraigAbu (Donegal) - Posts: 82 - 05/01/2024 21:52:54 2518559 Link 0 |
