Replying To SouthOfTheGap:  "I see that Stephen Rochford was part of Bernard Flynns unsuccessful ticket for the Meath job. That more or less confirms that he has no interest in any managerial roles as a front man and is content with coaching roles."
Maybe Jim didn't want him as part of his ticket ; )

Its good to see 99 percent of the posters agree that we have good players, and that with a top management team we can still be a force.
Donegal supporter's have always been knowledgeable about the game and it was no surprise to me they wanted change.
So the next appointment of management is critical, as it will either bring excitement back to Donegal gaa, or continue the downward trend.
No management team in Donegal excites me other than mcguinness and lacey.
I dont know enough about Ward of ballyshannon, but i have always heard good things about him.
Other than him, there are no other real candidates within Donegal.
We haven't to long to wait, 15th of August i believe the door closes for applications.
Maybe rorysgirls can throw a few names out there, so that we all can have a good laugh, keep us entertained until the 15th. The comedian that just keeps on giving, lol.

You have kept us all entertained lad with your love of Jim mc Guinness. Sad really.can you answer me how come Jack o Connor could do nothing with Kildare yet win an all Ireland with Kerry in his first year back, maybe better players might have something to do with it. Lol. Funny how the stay at home supporters are getting excited about our next manager, shudnt matter to you boys even the county players don't respect yous now. Glory hunters. Nice article from eoin ban in todays paper giving bonner high praise,, must annoy you and the certain other posters. Legend in Donegal gaa some trophies collected.

Shane Ward has a fair bit of coaching experience, but i don't believe he's up to that level. He managed Leitrim Seniors, and has been a selector/coach with Derrygonnelly for the last couple of years, reaching the Ulster Club Final which they lost to Kilcoo. Gary Duffy got rid of him the week before Championship a couple of years ago, a really strange move which I don't think was ever discussed properly, and it certainly left a sour taste with many. He could feature as part of a management team, but he certainly couldn't assemble a bid in his own right.

Barry Ward managed Aodh Ruadh Senior's, brought them back up to Senior a couple of years ago, and then took the unusual step of walking away. He's now the County U16 manager, and seems to be doing well. But the step up is certainly too big at this time.

Do any of our Inishowen contributors know, has Paul McGonigle any ambitions of management? He seemed to be close to Jim during his tenure.

Replying To The keeper:  "Yes its nice to be in Div 1 in the league, and its good to try out different players against the top teams in the league.
But mcguinness always had his eye on the championship and what it would take to defeat the top teams.
As all great managers do, there obsessed with perfection and getting every inch of energy out of the team.
The reality is since 2014 we have gone back in fitness and physicality compared to the top teams.
Top managers have every little detail gone through there head, and so has there team prepared for everything.
I remember in all the big games under mcguinness, the third quarter was when we really put the foot on the opposition's throat. Professionals called it the championship quarter because that was when the game was won or lost.

Sadly that is when Donegal lost games this last few years, as they just weren't prepared as a team.

I have seen mcguinness training teams, and he brings them to hell and back, so that there prepared physical and mentally to do whatever it takes to win.
I will have to write sometime now to explain to that other poster that i am using mcguinness as an example of what we should be looking for in a manager. And by no means do i expect mcguinness to take the job. Hopefully he understands, but its wishful thinking.

And some of the names being linked to the Donegal job is depressing to say the least.

Our only hope is to start a petition asking and begging mcguinness to take the job, and maybe if the whole of Donegal signed it, please god he will take it. What do yous think, lol. (The lol was for rorysboys)"
The dilemma for Jim McGuinness is that if he does allow his name to be put forward for it, his soccer dream for which he has put over 9 years work is basically over, and he has put considerable effort and sacrifice into making this happen as have his wife and children. While he would undoubtedly be the man to take this team to the next level, I know it would be a difficult decision for him to make.

Good point. An interview question that is often trotted out is where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
It would be interesting to hear Jim's answer to that. I wonder what level in soccer does he hope to reach in terms of coaching?

Whoever gets it, will be under pressure to deliver with this serious squad we've got. Our supporters will expect nothing less than winning ulsters and getting to croke park on big days.

I'd wager at a minimum he'd be holding out for either the Derry City job whenever it's next available or to potentially succeed Ollie Horgan at Harps. Sligo Rovers probably too far away but hard to know. There's the Irish League too but while I'm willing to admit that it's not my area of expertise, I wouldn't be sure how welcome a former GAA manager would be at a majority of them clubs.

Then again he was telling Tomás Ó Sé that hes found his passion again training youngsters, so it could be as easy as that he might just be happy doing what he's doing.

Getting to Croke Park for knockout games would be great. It's been a while now since we had that experience in quarters and semi finals.. Hopefully whoever manages us has belief in the players unlike your good self.

Why is that such a big deal to you? If Tyrone were on the lookout for a new manager tomorrow I'd imagine that would be the exact criteria they'd be laying out. Why set the bar low? With the size of our county and the popularity of gaelic football we should be targeting the quarter finals each and every year, regardless of whether we win Ulster or not.

I agree, and i personally cant see him throwing away them years training and doing his badges in soccer. It would be giving up on his soccer dream, and he is not the type to change his mind once its made up.

Lots of teams have gone back to managers that gave them success, tipperary went back to liam sheedy, kerry to O'connor. Its not living in the past.
Its merely being hopeful that our last successful manager would hopefully be interested.
If its the case that he is not, then thats fine, we can move on and look forward.
I personally would try someone like ward, even if he did walk out of a previous job as a selector, to me that just means he is strong willed and was not willing to bend on his way of playing or opinions.
A lot of the candidates mentioned already doesn't fill me with excitement, but hopefully i am proved wrong.
As i am a Donegal man, and would love to see the days we were in croke park regularly competing and holding our own against teams like, kerry, dublin and the rest.

Ward didn't leave on his own accord he was pushed. Candidates very scarce which everybody knew. Can u not ring Mc Guinness and tell him you'll not go to another game unless he comes back to manage us.. you who counts Mc Guinness as a close friend.

No big deal lad just stating the obvious.. we have a great squad just lacking a manager now to take us on the road to get Sam back..

Lads pay no attention.

When he called for Mc Daid to be given the senior job he lost whatever tiny bit of credibility he was clinging on to.

I wouldn't worry about that poster, he is still sore that his mate got a no confidence vote by the supporter's not turning up at the last game, which meant the management had to go.
I agree we should be aiming for a semi final or quarter final every year, but as we have falling behind the last few years under the previous management.
I believe a new man has a lot of work to do the first year to just make up ground.
In all areas i believe we have fallen slightly behind, mentality wise, fitness wise and just getting confidence back in the team.
Do you remember all the pundits tipping Donegal to be a force a few years ago, and Thomas o'shea raving about langan and mcgee and other players.
That from a legend of the great kerry side.
So it just shows you that the talent is there.
It just needs the right man to lead them.

I agree that he could be a candidate to replace Ollie Horgan at Finn Harps at the end of this season.
If Jim McGuinness is to succeed in soccer and climb the ladder, he needs to showcase what he can do in that sport, bigger clubs need to see something before they will put their trust in him to manage a much bigger club. So he needs to take on a small club in a challenging environment and make something of them that demonstrates what he can do.
