Yes. I was thinking back to when the Bertie Allen cup was for the team who topped the league. League matches had county players and there was certainly a bit of bite to the games. Wouldn't be unusual to see well over 1000 people at a match in Cullyfad, Clonee, Farneyhogan or Monaduff. Hard to keep track of the cup change in names. Why do the County Board need to change the names for competitions or swap cups around. It only ends up degrading the cup and the memory of a great gaelic man like Bertie Allen who gave so much to Longford football. Not as hard as you might imagine to keep track. A google search and voila... link.

Congratulations to the Hurlers' team & management on qualifying today for the Lory Meagher Final, particularly after losing in the 1st round against Leitrim. Hopefully they will be well supported & can get over the line against Louth next weekend in Croke Park. keeper7 (Longford) - Posts: 4088 - 14/05/2022 16:32:20 2417043 Link 0 |
Cheers for that, that's a new one for me. I'll have a read through.

Bertie Allen Cup was originally for the team who topped Div 1. When Martin Skelly was Chairman of the County Board they brought in competitions for each Division without County players. The Bertie Allen was then changed to that competition for Div 1 teams and Martin Skelly brought in the Skelly Cup for the Div 1 winners. Why not just have the Skelly Cup for the winners of the new competition?? No need to look too much into that!!!! The Bertie Allen is now downgraded to a Reserve Cup or something like that. By right the Div 1 winners should be playing for the Allen Cup and not the Skelly Cup.

Good draw, home advantage a big help. Probably the best draw we could have gotten except maybe for Down given how terribly things are going there. liosbreac6265 (Longford) - Posts: 255 - 17/05/2022 18:52:29 2418238 Link 0 |
Tailteann Cup against Fermanagh is confirmed as Saturday 28th May at 6:30pm in Pearse Park. I think we have only ever played Fermanagh twice before in Championship... back in 1996 in the All Ireland B Championship final which we lost after a replay (in Carrick I think). Played them 4 times in league in last 10 years with 1 win, 1 draw and 2 losses. Should be a competitive enough game. LongfordgaaAbú (Longford) - Posts: 586 - 18/05/2022 18:27:44 2418520 Link 0 |
Maybe London might also have been more favourable draw. Just on the timing off it, 6.30pm on same day as Champions League Final and Heineken Cup final,GAA really arent giving it much of a chance, will do well to get 500 there id say if league match between two was anything to go by. Be interesting to see the prices of tailteann cup games macca999 (Fermanagh) - Posts: 1150 - 18/05/2022 20:28:13 2418539 Link 0 |
Game is at 5.30 and regardless of the champions league final you wouldn't get 500 at it. Longford are very poorly supported. Be lucky if you had 150 longford supporters at it

Traveling support heading to Longford for the Tailteann Cup at 6:30pm will miss the European Champions Cup Final (starts 4:45pm) and the Champions League Final (starts 8pm). Great timing GAA!!!!!! LongfordgaaAbú (Longford) - Posts: 586 - 19/05/2022 13:57:46 2418710 Link 0 |

And the lads at the rugby and soccer won't see the Longford game either. Jesus, you just can't win around here on the 40 (Longford) - Posts: 156 - 19/05/2022 15:06:18 2418736 Link 1 |
The game is at half 5, over at 7 plenty of time for away support to get near home for most off the liverpool match and plenty of places to pull in along the way it its necessary. Gaa cant cater to everything have to get on with our own games. clashing with rugby wont effect crowds

What's the story with the club championship this year? It better not be 5 group gams again. Completely ruins the championship. BABBAN (Longford) - Posts: 5 - 20/05/2022 09:34:29 2418840 Link 0 |
Yeah, had to do it the hard way after narrowly losing the league final against Fermanagh & then disastrously against Leitrim in the Lory Meagher 1st round the following week. Subsequently had to win 4 games on the trot to qualify for the final…which they did! Tomorrow I think is their 9th competitive match in 10 weeks!!!

Dont see the problem gives clubs plenty of games especially after being without county players so long. Should only be 10 teams but there working to that I believe
