Replying To GreenMan94:  "I wouldn't say Jack Gilheany is a game changer myself but he definitely could have done a job at 6. He's based in Dublin but plays a bit of club rugby. Its a serious commitment to go into a county panel so its no surprise some boys can't do it.

Wrynn doesnt have near enough mobility or pace for number 6 in the modern game. I think they may have to look at Cillian McGloin or someone like that in that role unless they are able to get the likes of Chris Guckian or Tom Quinn in which looks unlikely at this stage. Although Mark Plunkett could even be moved back there. He seems to be able to plug holes in every position for both club and county which might not necessarily be helping him on an individual basis.

Cant see many division four teams having forwards on the level of Ryan O'Rourke, Keith Beirne, Darragh Rooney, Jordan Reynolds and Mark Plunkett (if he is played there.) Pearce Dolan is also arguably the best midfielder in Div 3/4. So shoring up our defense is the biggest task. Casey and Diffley are guaranteed starters. Outside of that you could argue there are 4 spots up for grabs.

Looking forward to see what impact Paul Keaney can make and what position they see him in. A worry is that he lacks a yard of pace."
If we get a good defensive structure in place we have the midfielders and forwards to trouble anyone in Div 4. Casey, Bruen, Diffely, possibly mark plunkett at 6, paddy Maguire, prob the best 5 with about 5 others of similar ability for the other position.

Bruen is gone travelling for the year. Which makes the decision to give him captaincy last year even more baffling.
Casey looks like he has the potential to be a full back for 10 years if he keeps improving.
Paddy Maguire should be rated as one of our all time best players but he's not getting any younger.
There's been a lot of chat about Fergal McTague over the past few years and at times he looks made for county level but injury and an immaturity in decision making seems to have stalled him abit. He has all the physical characteristics we need if he can be coached.

This is why I feel we're quite short at the back. Diffley and Casey are the only 2 definite starters in my eyes.

Sure how were they to know Bruen would go travelling

Pierce Dolan would be the only fella from Aughawillian I'd have on the team saw them vs Mohill and Manorhamilton and McTeague and the Plunketts did nothing of note,

I'd agree with a lot there. I still think Maguire is in our top 6 backs. The fact that I can only name 3 I believe should start everyday of the week tells its own story. Casey diffley and Maguire. Breun is an awful loss he'd be the standout player

Martin Mchugh has finally retired. What a great servant to gaa club and county. Battling his own health problems twice, he is a great example to players out there to give fighting. But I'm sure he will be on the side lines some where out there helping out.

Yeah, Maguire has been immense but I thought he was struggling all of last year and then he was near MOM against Sligo so its hard to know what he'll be like another year on. The more I think about it the more Plunkett might have to be moved back from 6 and surround him with pace. He is arguably the best footpasser in the county so he would give us a good outlet with that and obviously he will be then another option for whatever new keeper we decide to use.

Cillian McGloin is a riddle that needs to be figured out. Has all the attributes to be a top quality Inter-county footballer - Power, Pace, Skill. but he hasn't nailed down one position yet. Could he be a modern day 6? or a partner to Dolan at Midfield? The game can sometimes pass him by at Wing forward or wingback but we havent produced many players with his talents in this county we can't let them go to waste.

Your right about Mcgloin great player with real talent. But he had a really poor campaign with melvin gaels. Got a red card first day against gortletteragh two yellows for stupid off the ball stuff after only being subbed on 5 minutes. Melvin Gaels were on there way to a comeback at the time but he ended those chances.

Maybe Jack heslin could be an option at wing back he has pace to burn and is better running directly at the opposition than getting the ball with his back to goal. Would there be a possibility that there is a transition in Donegal and maybe Paul Brennan could be persuaded Back to leitrim that would be centre back sorted. He seems to only be on the fringes of the Donegal team and age is catching up on him to be a top Div 1 footballer but what an addition he'd be back to leitrim.

Brennan broke his ankle two months to ago so bit of returning
Doubt he will ever play for Leitrim again but rumours of a return to Melvin is on the cards
From a good source alot of behind the be scenes work happening with Melvin gales.liam
Gilmartin returning as manager so God love all in intermediate championship after he drills them for 6 months.will become different animals could see Rooney and mulligan yet

i would say he would rather be on fringes of a Donegal team that starting for leitrim.
By time he is past it for Donegal he will likely be past it for Leitrim too.
Agree the Intermediate championship will be another impossible one to call, will depend who has who available for the year and who wants it more, melvins quite poor all year but they went down before and came back up straight away to win Senior the following year. However, it is a different ball game now and they would not have the resources to take on and beat any of the big town teams

Leitrim finally given four home games in the League in 2023.

Great start at home in round one but 8 points (7 at least) will be a necessity before the final three games.

Home v Waterford
Away v London
Away v Wexford
Home v Carlow
Away v Wicklow
Home v Laois
Home v Sligo

Think your bank on about Brennan but at intermediate level Melvin wouldn't be meeting any major power houses
Allen Gaels town team but also in decline.not sure who else in it.

Division 4 fixtures for next year released:

Round 1: Waterford at home
Round 2: London away
Round 3: Wexford away
Round 4: Carlow at home
Round 5: Wicklow away
Round 6: Laois at home
Round 7: Sligo at home

Four at home and three away for a welcome change. Wexford, Wicklow and London are the three away games. Two home games to finish against the two strongest in the division along with ourselves. If promotion is in the mix it'll be a great way to finish. Looking forward to it already

Melvin Gaels have the third biggest pick in Leitrim. With exception of Carrick no other town in Leitrim are a big town.

Thoughts on Roscommon going for a divisional championship for 2023 similar to Kerry? Meath also conducted an end of season regional tournament as trials for the county team. Possibly something we in Leitrim could look into.

Probably will happen in most rural counties eventually due to smaller clubs struggling with numbers. Could be an idea to replace the spring league with a divisional league. Would be a good chance for junior/intermediate players to get a chance at being noticed.

Think it would be a great idea. I also think an 8 team senior championship would improve overall standard. Of senior inter and junior. Giving us a better chance to compete in Connacht

I suggested this on here years ago and everyone shot it down and said it wouldn't work. But once Roscommon start doing it ….

Below is how I'd like to see the championship restructured. I believe it will give more game time to players and expose junior and intermediate footballers to a higher level of football. In Leitrim's last competitive game only one player got game time who was below senior grade at club level. That was Conor Reynolds of Annaduff. If 2023 follows the same fixture plan as 2022 the most competitive games a senior club can possibly play is 15. This is ignoring the spring league which is only a mickey mouse competition if we are being serious. The league will run from 27th of May until the 5th Aug and championship from 12th Aug until 14th of Oct. 15 weekends of football with 6 breaks.

Restructure:

1. I would exclude all clubs second teams from competing against first teams.

2. The 24 clubs would be split between 3 division's for league and championship. Each division having 8 teams. Division 3 and Junior would have 7 that is expecting St Osnit's won't enter a team.

3. League. The league would run on a round robin basis all teams playing each other once and the top two competing in the league final as usual. It would begin a week earlier on the 20th of May and conclude on the 22nd of July. Maximum of 8 games with 2 weekends without games.

4. Club championships. The club championships would be reduced to the three competitions senior, intermediate and junior (second team competitions would be separate). reduced from 10 to 8 teams per division. Two groups of four will be drawn with each team playing each other once. Top two in each group progress to Semi finals and bottom two compete in relegation playoffs with one team being relegated. Winners of intermediate to be promoted to senior and vice versa for junior. Championship reduced from maximum 7 games to maximum 5 games. the 5 games played from 29th July to 9th Sept with two weekends of breaks.

5. Regional/Divisonal Competition.
All Leitrim clubs broken into 4 regions North, South, East and West.

North region South region East region West region
Manorhamilton Mohill Ballinamore St Marys
Melvin Gaels Gortletteragh Fenagh Leitrim Gaels
Dromahair Eslin Aughawillan Allen Gaels
Drumkeerin Cloone Aughnasheelin Annaduff
St Osnits? Aughavas Kiltubrid Bornacoola
Glenfarne/Kilty Carrigallen Drumreilly
Ballinaglera

Competition will consist of 12 teams, the 8 senior clubs and 4 regional teams.

St Marys
Mohill
Leitrim Gaels
Fenagh
Ballinamore
Aughawillan
Manorhamilton
Gortletteragh
North Region (Melvin, Dromahair, Drumkeerin, St Osnits, Glenfarne)

East Region (Aughnasheelin, Kiltubrid, Drumreilly, Ballinaglera)
West Region ( Allen Gaels, Bornacoola, Annaduff)

*Manor and Gort down as senior club as they won senior relegation semi finals 2022

Team relegated from senior in 2023 to join there respective divisional team and winners of intermediate to compete on there own in regional competition for the following season. Winners of senior, intermediate and junior championships to still represent Leitrim in Connacht club championships. The 12 teams are split into 4 groups of 3. Top two teams in each group progress to quarter finals. Bottom team in each group progress to Shield competition. Winner receives Packy McGarty Cup. Competition would begin on 23rd of Sept and conclude on 22nd of Oct. each team getting a minimum of three games and maximum of 5.
