i think its 18 for your first team in the championship, 15 starters and 3 subs. if a county player misses the first round then they are automatically named as one of the 18. i'm open for correction but i think that's the general jist.

That would sound about right for our county board

Well if we're not jealous at what the mighty Derry are doing in Croke Park at the moment, we may all as well go home... Square_B (Leitrim) - Posts: 1077 - 16/07/2023 17:23:50 2494833 Link 0 |
The progress Derry have made since 2019 is unbelievable. And we drew with them in 2020 in div 3. Crazy.

yeah but we are not a serious footballing county. We may have smaller population, resources etc but when you cannot get buy in from your best players you are never going to reach potential. Granted we are never going to be getting to AI semis but we could at least compete in Div 3 if we have everyone available and our house in order

Just look at Derry underage All Ireland minor winners and easily at that joeman123 (Leitrim) - Posts: 523 - 17/07/2023 11:41:34 2495055 Link 0 |
yes underage structures come into it too, we seem to be competing up to U16 but then there is a gap at minor and U20 level. it has been debated over and over here the problems with it, what will actually be done about it i do not know.

Just because we got promoted alongside Derry and then drew with them in division 3 is irrelevant. It's like saying because Ireland we're unlucky to lose 1-0 to France that we are not far off them. Ireland still lost to Greece and are very poor. France have players littered all across the top sides and leagues in Europe and are producing top quality players. Our players are bit part players in second division sides. leitrim4sam (Leitrim) - Posts: 674 - 17/07/2023 16:50:04 2495193 Link 1 |
well said. the top club teams in Derry would beat us, even without their county players, same as Dublin and Kerry. Their conditioning would be better than us, never mind ability. invest in underage and aim to cut senior and inter numbers to 8 (eliminates teams/players doing the minimum to stay up and be made earn their status), then after a few years we may see an improvement gaelsboy (Leitrim) - Posts: 589 - 17/07/2023 17:20:52 2495213 Link 3 |
Some sense in that. Who are the people that can make it happen? Answer The Club delegates in Leitrim joeman123 (Leitrim) - Posts: 523 - 17/07/2023 21:28:48 2495253 Link 0 |
I don't disagree with any of this and don't expect us to be within ten minutes of making an all Ireland final but we should be much better than we currently are. Look at the Derry team in 2020 the backbone of that team was playing at the weekend, they will be gutted about not beating kerry in an all Ireland semi final and we have people making excuses for us getting bet by New York in the championship.

That area of South Derry must be the strongest football area in the country. How many top club teams have came from such a small radius. Slaughtneil, Watty Grahams Glen, Ballinderry, Lavey, The Loup, Bellaghy, Dungiven, all have made or won an Ulster Club Final and I'm probably missing one or two. Incredible football pedigree in such a small area. drumalee11 (USA) - Posts: 331 - 18/07/2023 09:12:22 2495290 Link 0 |
it is the tip toeing along, happy with the status quo, not wanting to rock the boat etc that has us where we are. We were unlucky with loosing players to emigration/injury but every county has this. There are no excuses for losing to a team of mostly mercenaries over for a few bucks in NY gaelsboy (Leitrim) - Posts: 589 - 18/07/2023 10:59:27 2495345 Link 0 |
I agree that senior should be 8 teams, intermediate should be 8 teams and junior A should be 7 teams. All first teams no second strings allowed. Only three first teams currently in the junior championship is ridiculous. What an improvement this would bring about. leitrim4sam (Leitrim) - Posts: 674 - 18/07/2023 11:02:16 2495346 Link 0 |
