Primarily agree with that assessment after looking at the game again on TV. The Kerry conversion rate was about 86% (18/21) while Roscommons was only about 52% (12/23). Last year the conversion rate by Roscommon players was one of our main strengths. Unlike ourselves, Kerry players took very few pot shots from distance and their scores included at least 3 hand passes from close distance. The main problem was the slow transition out of defence giving the opposition lots of time to track back. Another interlinked problem was that we often had no/very-limited players up the field after turnovers. One of the few times we turned over ball (R. Fallon) we scored from a long ball to D. Cregg. I would like to see us leaving at least one or two players up the field at all times. It also means that players can interchange and recharge the batteries a little bit. The down side of that strategy is that you open up more space for the opposition to exploit when attacking. I did see some impovement from previous performances. No lack of effort from the players, but not sure if all the players have the same speed/stamina as last year YET. Hopefully it will peak later in the year and that the shot selection and accuracy will also improve. The best of luck to the team in Derry next week. Safe driving to all who travel. letsgetgoing (Roscommon) - Posts: 644 - 18/03/2024 23:07:22 2532025 Link 0 |

If Kerry are drawn against any of the Northern teams in the qualifiers (neutral venue) you might get your chance?

D Murtagh played a great kick pass for one of those quick counters, he actually may have done it twice. Great to see more of that. But as you say, there were times when there wasn't enough or any player ahead of the ball. I remember at one stage in the second half Kerry turned us over around the middle of the field and they must have had about 5 players absolutely bursting a gut forward on the counter. That is positive we had 23 chances, although some of those shots were from wild locations but we also missed some scorable one's as well. Also need to be winning more of those 50-50 situations. Think it was in the second half Kerry had the ball near the middle of the field and close to the touchline, 3-4 Ros lads did very well to bottle play up but just couldn't force the turnover and Kerry got away and up the field for a scoring chance. That is the small margins in Div 1 where you get punished if you can't get that turnover. It's the sort of thing Mayo, Dublin, Tyrone do so well. Was TOR ok coming off? Or just a case of still finding fitness? Hopefully Husseys hand injury isn't too bad. MachaireConnacht (Roscommon) - Posts: 1000 - 19/03/2024 10:42:06 2532072 Link 0 |
Cathal Heneghan, hang your head in shame. Ban incoming and rightly so. The_Fridge (Tyrone) - Posts: 2093 - 19/03/2024 12:57:29 2532118 Link 0 |
I see Senan Lambe named on the U20 team for tomorrow v Mayo. Does that mean he won't be able to play in the championship for the seniors. What's the word on this year's U20 team. How are they rated.? endgame (Roscommon) - Posts: 2308 - 19/03/2024 13:23:23 2532129 Link 0 |

Not clear cut intentional from my viewing.

It's not clear cut, and then you have Ryan O'Donoghue who was clearly spotted stamping on the back of Sean Kelly's ankle before throw in last summer yet no action was taken by CCCC so remains to be seen will any action will be taken here.

What about the Tyrone player who got sent off for throwing punches against us and ye had the neck to appeal it. Same lad was throwing punches against Galway too.

It wasn't a Tyrone man. Ryan O'Donoghue got away with a whole level of worse foul on Sean Kelly last year. There's a precedent. Heneghan contact looked more clumsy than intentional just looking down to see if he had accidentally injured his opponent. Would be very harsh to get any ban.

100% clear cut and 100% intentional.

It's hard to know what to make of things at the minute. Davy Burke is very charismatic, even his interview after the Kerry game somehow left me feeling good about things. I don't think he's lost the dressing room. Diarmuid spoke highly of him before the match on TG4. To the Derry man who said they'll be relegating us this weekend, I'm afraid you're wrong. We're well capable of relegating ourselves, thanks. Positives are things like the amount of players that have been transitioned from the u20s team that played the AI final a few years back. There must be 8 if not 9 now in most matchday panels, with some gems of players at that. But it's true that these last few games we have been rudderless bar the odd burst. Let's see. Ultan Harney and Ronan Daly brought great energy and physicality back to the team last week. Cathal Heneghan is a serious talent, a future marquee forward for Roscommon alongside Ben. No wonder all the outsiders have descended on the forum looking for his scalp. SpanishRossie (Roscommon) - Posts: 31 - 19/03/2024 16:59:59 2532201 Link 1 |
Colm Neary is a big loss. Roscommon beat Mayo at U17 three years ago in a high scoring match on a hot July evening in Hyde Park. Best of luck to the team and management tomorrow.

I don't think it was intentional and certainly not clear cut

When you look at the incident in slow motion it doesn't look good. He didn't have to put his foot on Foley's ankle. He could easily have avoided it. I'm not saying he will get suspended over it because the rules in GAA are off the radar. As a matter of interest did you see the umpire waving Clifford's point wide from the penalty but then change his mind.. if you can't trust a man standing by a post when a forward takes a shot unopposed from a penalty then you really don't know what to expect with the other tackle eoinog (Sligo) - Posts: 1998 - 19/03/2024 18:21:42 2532217 Link 0 |
Doesn't look good in slow mo but then most physical contacts don't. I'd like to see it from a different angle, it's hard to even tell if he was even looking at where his foot was. On the penalty, a crazy call. I'd say the ref couldn't believe he had to get involved to over turn it. MachaireConnacht (Roscommon) - Posts: 1000 - 19/03/2024 19:17:07 2532227 Link 0 |
I'd imagine if it was a tyrone man you wouldn't be telling him to hang his head in shame, in fact you'd probably be defending him to the hilt.

That tackle on Sean Kelly really soured me on Ryan O Donoghue who loves to get stuck in when he doesnt need to as Mayo's best attacking player. I wouldn't be surprised if one of his moments costs Mayo dear this year.
