Replying To D.Hyde:  "IF this is true then where do supporters draw the line? If we can't even play league games at home something needs to happen and serious questions need to be asked of this county board. A division one team with no home ground, no training facilities? How long ago now since they were told about the work that's needed to bring our county ground to standard?? How long are we promised a new training centre for our County teams? And how much money have us supporters put into them through fundraising draws, Club Rossie membership etc?? If these rumours are true and I can't bring my children to watch my flagship team in their own ground against the country's best, then I won't be putting another Euro their way."
Its well beyond time that we got businessmen in to run the CB. Its obvious this is not a job for Public Servants.

Who are the "we"?
Any member of the GAA can run for the Officerships which are unpaid voluntary positions.
How many "businessmen" are queueing up so that "we can get them in"???

I am well aware of the rules regarding membership. The point I am making is that Roscommon CB has too long been run by Public Servants who are not business "savy". Its time for change, How long has it been known that a Centre of Excellence is needed?, how long has it been known that Hyde Park is not up to scratch?, how long did it take to appoint a manager? The CB have been going round in circles for the past 10 years and its the same individuals that are going round in the different positions. Nothing is changing and more still nothing is happening.

We had so-called "business savy" people before and it didn't end well.

So what you are saying is that you are happy with the performance of the current CB. That is fair enough. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Personally I think its a bit of a mish mash and may not end well. Time will tell, if what is been said on this forum is true and the Hyde will not be hosting League games come next Spring then once again it will be the Businesses of the town (whom are always asked to support the team) that will lose out on Revenue on these days. It is also becoming obvious that the line up of potential managers for interview were not over prepared when very few of them had their management teams put together. Looks like it is the CB that are dictating who the selectors will be and have forced Eddie Lohan onto the team.

County board has chosen selectors in the past but on this occasion Davy Burke chose Eddie Lohan based on his previous work with club teams and underage county teams in Roscommon.

Gerry McGowan is the latest added to his management team and Gary Flannery continues as the strength and conditioning coach

Actually only on candidate didn't have a back room team assembled and he got the job. Go figure

No, I never said that. There is a simplistic view out there if you have business people running things that that automatically means unblemished success, when there are plenty of examples of business people messing things up as much as anyone else. And being a civil servant is no barrier to being a shrewd business man as Pat McDonagh has shown. In an ideal world you have a nice mix of people from different professional backgrounds, and ages. I don't know the in workings on the county board so I can't really give a fair evaluation. On the outside it does look like issues such as a centre of excellance, Hyde improvements and the manager selection weren't being adequately/promptly dealt with but maybe there are factors such as rising construction costs, difficultly getting contractors and red tape with tenders that have affected the Hyde works and on the manager front, it doesn't seem to have been unique to Roscommon to sort out a manager quickly. The centre of exellence should have been done years ago and is a legacy issue of previous county boards. That should be a prioriy but how do you afford a centre of excellence, refurbishment of the Hyde and run county teams to top standard in this climate? Part of me thinks the centre of excellence should take precedence over the Hyde but then not being able to host league games in the county is far from ideal.

As someone else pointed it out. People have to volunteer a lot of their time and that unfortunately means a lot of people from diffferent professions/backgrounds just don't have the time.

Listened to his interview on Off the Ball. Very postive, very enthusiastic. It's important there was someone from within the county in the backroom team. He said that there might be one other addition but not confirmed yet.

That was a great natural enthusiastic interview with hardly a word of managerspeak or clichés.
Important to have local involvement in backroom with hopefully one more to come.
The local knowledge of players, who's who in GAA circles and local GAA politics is invaluable.

Exactly, nice natural chat and not boring robotic clichés which seems all too common these days. Best of luck to him and the team now.

Very impressive interview alright. Interesting to hear him keen to give young lads a chance - hopefully not too many at once though as division 1 is not the place for too much experimentation. He also mentioned balance issues within the team which I presume means the overly attack minded forwards. I feel he'll have hard working wing forwards and the others will be made fight for the remaining positions which is how the modern game has to be.

On another note, I see that Willie Hegarty had in his column this week that Ultan Harney looks like he is out for 2023. Is this due to injury does anyone know? Big loss if true, he was probably our best player last year.

Ultan has plans to take a year out to go travelling, it was pre planned before any manager was appointed.

Big loss but hopefully we are still a Div 1 team when he returns in 2024.

Huge loss to us for next season. Was my player of the year for last year. Can't begrudge him the chance to go traveling but from a selfish point of view hopefully he is back in 2024 in full health and top condition. I hope there are not going to be too many others to follow him. We'll need the strongest panel possible to maintain division 1 status. Also I'd like to wish Davy Burke and Mark McHugh the best of luck for next year and beyond. I have to admit I knew very little of Davy before his appointment but he comes across very well. We need that positivity within the set up and hopefully he can use it to his advantage going forward. If the rumours are to be believed and John Rogers comes on board the backroom team then that'll only add to the set up. I was very impressed with Strokestown in the county final. Played some lovely football and were very clinical. Boyle were the better team in the first half but tactically they got it all wrong. Strokestown were set up very well by Rogers both defensively and offensively and really you couldn't argue with them winning the game. Best of luck to them in the Connacht championship.

Gerry McGowan is a very good addition to the backroom team. Very highly regarded amongst his peers. Was originally part of Bernard Flynns ticket.

At times against Galway, Harney seemed like your only player. I've seen clips of him since his u-21 days, and really like how he operates. However, his abrasive, hung-Ho style is conducive to injury, of which he seems to have had a few.

So hopefully, if Ultan is to be out for a year, that it's down to traveling and not injury. Perhaps, the uncertainty and taking so long to put a manager in place, influence his and other players decisions, not just in Roscommon but certain other counties too, to take a year out and go traveling.

When the house isn't in order, why hang around?

Hopefully, I get to witness Ultan Harney at his best in the blue and primrose again.
