Is Power any better on kickouts or commanding the area. That's our 2 big problems and every team are going to hone in on these.

In fairness, on kickouts, if teams push up, there isn't a lot you can do except go long. Bringing Comer out for them will help that. I'm surprised Tierney doesn't win more, also lost some just on breaking ball, it's a bit of a lottery but need to have men there.

Re the high ball, Gleeson looks like an accident waiting to happen but in fairness did reasonably well against Mayo, tapped one over and batted 2 away fairly solidly.

Maybe we should be looking for someone who plays outfield to play there, a big lad who's a good footballer, confident on the ball.

I was there and not sure its it showed on TV but there was a bad dose of rain towards end of first half and both pitch and ball looked very slick/slippy. Your prob right but just saying, conditions had a part to play

Considering he trained with them for at most 2 weeks he did quite well. He will improve a lot

Joyce and management clearly see Gleeson as first choice and if Power gets some game time during this league campaign he'll have to excel to claim a championship starting spot.

Pretty sure Sweeney was trying to kick it to a Galway player but he overhit it straight to O'Donoghue. Had he just leathered it 60 yards down the pitch it probably would have been game over.

Thought O'Flaherty did very well for a young lad on debut. You can see he's got great athleticism and speed. Just hasn't got the match experience yet but all the tools are there.

It was suggested when Paul Conroy got the bad injury. He played in goal for Ireland in underage soccer. It's more about pace, I think Cluxton was 4 seconds from ball going dead to having it on the tee. I actually think Power has a very good and varied kick out, not convinced by the rest of his game TBH

Exactly. Thought Gleeson was alright all things considered. No-one would have stopped the goal and looked fine under the dropping ball in the square. Got good direction into his punched clearances. Lost a good few long kickouts but that was as much the fault of the receivers who should have the skill to field them or the nous to break them to a teammate. Flaherty didn't get too many matches last year if you remember and his kickouts were also inconsistent.

Gleeson would not be my choice as he gives me kittens under a high ball or when out soloing slowly however Galway could have Cluxton in goal and he would look bad as we appear to have no discernible kickout strategy or lads breaking for a driven pass around the 45s like most teams have. Either the opposition give us a short one to a cornerback or we try and overload a side and bomb it out. Do not understand why a man like Cian O Neill so clearly driven by detail hasn't sorted this to at least make us middle of the pack at it.

I'm surprised he has never taken a look at the Goldrick fella from Claregalway. Saw him against my own club Caherlistrane last year. He seems to be good talent. Management have a lot of loyalty to the inconsistent Matthew Tierney. The Moycullen corner backs did well and i'd say they will be kept around. Should be beating Roscommon at home in the league. They are never able to put 2 performances back to back.

Faherty was having a mare on kickouts in the league final last year against rossies before he went down injured. Of the lads involved, Power is the best but I'd be trying to get Lavelle back in, was the most solid keeper Galway have had in years and has the best kickouts in Galway club scene along with Power Breathnach and O'Malley.

Be interested to see Maher get some game time in midfield, looks very good for club, reminds me of Ciaran Duggan.
What are people's opinion on Niall Daly as midfielder? Know he can score points but is he a good fielder? Or similar to what's there already?

Conor Flaherty had a severe tear of his quad in that game.He was lucky to be able to kick the ball at all. That is why he was out for 12 weeks after the league final. He still managed pull off a few good saves.

Flaherty was injured during league final last year with a severe injury and was out for 12 weeks and that was why he didnt get games in championship. He also played Sigerson and Fitzgibbon so was given breaks by management in goals when his playing load was too much.Gleeson has had several years in goals.Looks like you want a goalkeeper who is fully formed at 21 years of age.Beggan,Cluxton and all good goalkeepers who allade mistakes at the start if their careers but were given time to develop.

Why doesn't Gleeson be busting himself to put the ball on the tee... drives me mad.. I think he is the best of a bad bunch at the moment outside of levalle who Joyce doesn't fancy.

He doesn't seem to pick up on height mismatches.. I thought he could have dropped a few more on top of Cooke the last evening as was the case in the all Ireland and dropped more on top of Kelly who had the height on Gavin White.

Interesting to see what happens with Tierney and Conroy in the coming matches..

Niall Daly scored 5 points v Ross in league last year from midfield, he never played midfield after that he played centre forward didn't make much sense to me ,, If management' don't think he good enough he should not be there , Tierney should be out there he not doing it as a forward on borrowed time i think ,, I'm sure Joyce will find a few more Moycullen lads to play next day ,, ,

There is an awful lot of nonsense being spouted here about the goalkeeper position, going back for God's sake as far as the Martin MacNamara era. It is a totally different role now. One time ago the goalkeeper just kicked the ball out as far as he could to the midfield area and it was a lottery who won it. That's how great midfielders such as Mick O'Connell made their names. Now the goalie is blamed if his own player doesn't get possession when he has to hit it long on account of the opposition hard press. While the goalie must try to optimise his team's chances of gaining possession, his teammates in midfield have a greater responsibility. The goalkeeper is saddled with blame for lost kick-outs. Those of his teammates who should be gaining possession are almost absolved from blame. So ease up on all this condemnation of our goalie Gleeson. He is as good as any keeper in the country. There is 10 times more responsibility placed on the goalie now compared to when Galway last won All Irelands in 1998 and 2001. A keeper was "great" back then if he could make a few saves. Failure to find a man from his kickouts was not part of the assessment. So give Gleeson a chance and stop all this unwarranted negativity. He is a fine goalkeeper and will prove it in time. It is a very onerous place to play in the modern possession game.

Same auld story and has been for the last number of years ie blame the goalie. Every goalkeeper we have for the last few years have got lots of criticism on here and on other forums with the exception of Flaherty. He played a few games last year and I did not see anything special but I will be delighted to be proven wrong. But this talk of begging him to come back all I can say is Jesus wept. Gleeson did ok the last night and I will judge him on each game played and not on what might happen. My own opinion is that Lavelle is the best goalie but I will back whoever is chosen.
Whats bugging most people with Gleeson is his kick outs and we have to address that. Someone reported the stats here that we won all of the short ones but that we only won about three out of nine of his long ones. We have to get used to the fact that all top teams will push up aggressivly and that most kick outs against top teams will have to go long. To my mind we have no ball winning mid fielder and hav'nt had for about ten years. This in turn has led to a short tenure for a number of goalkeepers. Unless we find one midfielder we'll win nothing with this team. Between Niall Daly, John Maher, Matthew Barrett and Ger Davoren ( who has forced himself into the reckoning after the Glen game) I hope there is one to stake a claim. I dont think that Peter Cooke is good enough in the air for mid field. It is a bit rich blaming the goalie if we have no one to contest it in midfield and just to finish up if we go with the same mid field pairing next week my expectations for the year will be seriously diminished.

I would have to agree with you that he is probably the best of a bad bunch.

Regarding kickouts, I would imagine he is following instructions from management on a game plan or kick out strategy.
