Lads, Barry McHugh couldn't track back against Roscommon in 2018 but 8 years later after a break from the panel he's become Ja Fallon the second. Can we move on please, he's not on the panel and won't be featuring

One thing I'd love PJ to do for the next game is tell the players to go man on man on kickouts. The zonel marking was absolutely shocking today if they made Ros Common go long Galway would've had a great chance of getting some ball front rossies kickouts

Ah well lads not to be, 9 minutes to play and 6 points ahead most myself included thought Galway was heading for five Connacht titles in a row. Credit to the rossies some seriously good scores to win it out.

A really good high quality final and the positives is Comer and Walsh fit and looking good for the All-Ireland series, head up for All-Ireland series should beat Kildare and then one win away from reaching the last 8.

Replying To Marooned:  "The Ryan Roche selection was bizarre. He played a bit during then league but was usually subbed off. Then starts a Connacht final out of nowhere. Bar the early catch he had he was completely anonymous. Not having a go at the lad as he's young but I don't think management did him any favours today."
Fair comment, he was absolutely gasping for air at one point chasing a Roscommon lad for a short kickout, they targeted him for these, and then management let him play another 6 minutes of second half before subbing him.......

Replying To Marooned:  "Twice they hoofed frees down the field. And lost possession. Instead of trying to find a loose man. Daly did it once but I think there was another. Maybe a sign that there was nobody moving looking for the ball."
Yeah, not blaming Daly at all, don't think he had much options except hoof it

Very disappointing result for us yesterday
Shane Walsh was a joy to watch yesterday , Kelly was great offensively but sometimes forgets he's meant to be a defender
Comer excellent when he came on but his carry on near the sideline cost us , that free they scored put them a point up
Finnerty also showing his experience , consistently always performs
Our half backline was non existent , these guys that are " strong runners " cannot defend or tackle , Dylan Mchugh gets away with a lot
Questions need to be asked of Joyce's team selection
Ryan Roche & Daniel o Flaherty , Kieran Molloy - Don't think the decision to start these was justified at all
We got tore apart for the goals , what were our defenders doing ?
Massive gap right down the centre
Wrong call dropping Daly , lost a bit of pace, knee injuries have caught up with him the last year but quick upstairs with a football brain that you can't teach comparing to some of them lads running headless around , a natural no6 who orgainises the defence & can dictate the build up play.

On reflection galways big men from 3-4 years ago played their hearts out. Scored 28 points in 60min. With wides could have and needed 32-34pts to put away roscommon. Ran out of steam. Credit truly lies with rossies. Very good side

Replying To ColmFlaherty:  "What was the free against Comer for for Roscommon to take the lead?"
The free was against Hernon first. Moved forward against Comer for the two pointer because he supposedly delayed Roscommon taking the free.
The thing is, he definitely thought it was a Galway line ball, so it was pretty harsh. The free was also soft originally, but Hernon could have been smarter. Roscommon lad was going nowhere and was about to be turned over if he shadowed him.
Kickouts are still the biggest issues. Roscommon got a load of short ones away against the wind. Carroll had a handy option free so many times. They targeted Ryan Roche's lack of quickness being able to cover his man, who got free regularly.
Contrast it with the second half, where Flaherty didn't once have an option to go short. We had to go long almost every time, and when you're doing that it's basically a lottery. Think we won only one kickout after Comer's goal and obviously got no score in that time, while Roscommon scored 8 points.
We were also wide open down the middle of the defence in the first half. Roscommon looked like they had a goal on almost every time they ran at us. The lack of ability to get proper contact on the runners was very poor.
Roscommon very deserving winners and fair play to them. We have a lot to think about the before the Kildare game.

That was a cracking game yesterday, the first half wide count cost us dearly in the end combined with some missed goal opportunities in the second. The Rossies have great shooters from distance and got the key scores down the stretch, can't begrudge them winning. All about the all Ireland series now and building a head of steam with Kildare coming to town in 2 weeks.

One baffling aspect of that game which we surely have to tweak is our inability (or maybe unwillingness) to go man on man on opposition kickouts when we have a strong wind in our favour. Carroll is a very good keeper but we never really put the squeeze on their short ones in the first half compared to how they forced us long in the second. Teams are targeting our kickouts and unless we can start winning more primary possession and breaks we'll be hard pressed to go far.

Any news on the McDaid injury, looked in a lot of pain when he went down but at least he was able to walk off himself.

Hard luck yesterday lads. It was a great game of football which ebbed and flowed throughout.
I thought maybe ye didn't press aggressively enough in the first half. Roscommon targetted your young corner forward who seemed to be a wee bit off the pace. The wides in the first half were a killer for ye as well.

In fairness to Roscommon though they have some power and legs in their team. It will be very interesting to see how they go if/when they reach Croke Park.

For yourselves, will young Thompson be involved at any stage? I see he has suffered an injury Stateside - not ideal.

Yesterday has got me thinking of what could have been if we had Matthew Thompson and Peter Cooke

Who is the Galway player standing right in front of Heneghan on the 55 yard line, before the Ros player proceeds to streak past him up the middle, play a one two before netting with ease for Ros's 2nd goal in the first half? The same Galway player managed to jog to the 40 in 'pursuit' of Heneghan, and was probably 20yards behind the Ros player when he struck the goal.

It's not the type of defending that'll win big football matches. You'd imagine that item 1a on Tyrone's gameplan will be not to let Heneghan streak up the middle of their defence 4 times to setup 4 goal chances yielding 3-1.

I think it was a head injury? Looked unsteady when he got up and went straight down the tunnel into the dressing room.

It's always remarkable how players who are not around jump to Providence when a game is lost. In the lead up to the game most posted on this site agreed it was the strongest Galway panel in years.

PJ on the radio said he got a bang on the head and hoped he'd be ok. I was afraid it was his leg at first after he landed after tackling the Roscommon player. Huge loss after he went off. He dragged Galway back into the game during that 2nd half.

such rubbish. cooke has had many chances with galway and never did it simple as that.

we had a so called great bench before the game. daly hernon tierney had no impact when introduced

comer got some great scores but also cost us at the end when not letting go of the ros common player.

we go with the players we have.

The injury to Cillian McDaid was major, we got no forward ball after he went off, he was an awful loss. The game was lost following this injury. He was breaking lines and was disruptive to their attacking play.

Think it was O'Flaherty. He had a bad day tracking runners. And he isn't slow. Just didn't seem fully engaged or tuned in. Another selection that didn't work.

Roche another strange selection. Did well for the early goal but Roscommon soon twigged his lack of pace and targeted his man on short kickouts. He couldn't cover the ground quickly enough.

Sideline stuck looking at these problems for far too long before doing anything.

Its true, its our strongest panel in years, on paper.

But we still rely on the old reliables when available. Comer, Walsh, Conroy, Kelly.

Harsh to leave out Maher in that conversation because he is usually exceptional but yesterday just wasnt his day.
Shane McGrath and Oisin McDonagh (is he injured?) were finds of the league but didnt get much time yesterday.
Roche's involvement for the goal was excellent but surely McGrath and McDonagh have a lot to offer here.

When will Rob click when Damo and Shane are on the pitch too? Having all three firing would be a joy to watch.

Its fine margins, and if we win that game yesterday maybe these conversations dont happen, but its a tough pill to swallow considering we were in the driving seat and let momentum switch in the last few mins.
