Replying To Doylerwex:  "The conversation is still about Galway for the most part. We're here because we're playing on Sunday. Won't see us again until the championship then.

Sound for the hospitality all the same"
True Doyler - I am trying to be more generous as a new year's resolution! lol

Replying To Oldtourman:  "Boston Guy, I agree with all you say above, except the bottomless money argument. For the first 120 years of the Association Cork had more hurlers than the next four Hurling Counties in Munster put together and at least five and possibly as many as seven times the Financial Resources of a county like LK. They had county Hurling Finals that never seemed to draw less than 20, 000 people but more often than not drew nearer to 30, 000. In the early seventies there was 31,000 at a Cork County Final and there over 36, 000 in 1976- and several more got in for nothing that day. they also had very substantial attendances at county football finals. If you got 5,000 at a Limerick Hurling Final you would be very lucky and about 2,000 would be about average for a Football Final.. Add to this the fact that they never built a substantial pitch until 1976, whereas Limerick built a new Stadium as far back as 1926 and catered for a 61,000 crowd in 1961. Add to this the fact that Cork Hurlers were guaranteed pretty good jobs in the City, whereas Hurlers were almost seen as second class citizens in relation to rugby players in Limerick.
Essentially if money mattered that much, Cork should have at least twice the number of All Irelands they have."
I didnt say Money was the main reason for Limerick's success, you still have to spend it wisely which Limerick has done and just like everything else ....better than most. But to discount the ability to bring in the best science, nutrition, psychologists, strength and conditioning is also a key component that cannot be overlooked. Now making an excuse that Limerick are so good BECAUSE of the money is stupid and an insult to the current Limerick setup. BUT combine it with all the other things mentioned above they are a massive force.

Very interested to see them in full flight this year as their psychologist has left"
The great thing about this Limerick team is the "Next Man Up" mentality they have done this on the field and also with their backroom team. I dont expect a drop in standards this year

Replying To Viking66:  "Ah yes but Kilkenny have all those things except speed and haven't won an AI since 2015. The bottomless pit of money thing is wearing thin at this stage. All the top Senior Hurling panels want for nothing and have fortunes spent on them."
Its not about the money, you still have to spend it wisely its a contributing factor, just as all of the components I mentioned above. To discount it totally in the modern era is the same as discounting a good S&C or nutrition program. Limerick are successful because they seem to do everything better ATM that everyone else and its not because they are AI champions or have $$$ its because they have won 5 of the last 6 AI's and truth be told but for that deflection of a KK hurl in the semi which should have been a 70, who would have bet against Burns putting that over the bar. Limerick would be going for an unprecedented 7 in a row. A good team can be caught on the hop but a great team has the ability to consistently perform at the highest level over a long period of time.

Replying To munsterchamps:  "everyone is talking about money, psychology, strength .speed, power, skill. but the big difference between limerick and the chasing pack is paul kinnerk. he has made a very good limerick team one of the greatest if not the greatest team of all time. this man is a genius and he has spent the whole winter planning 2024 to stay ahead of the chasing pack . to me his greatest strength is he is able to size up the opposition so quickly . he sits bk nice and calm watching the first 20 mins and is able to change things around to get the better of the opposition he is cool and laid back and then you see the likes of davy fitz jumping around like a kangaroo., and to a lesser extent shefflin roaring at linesmen and refs. how can they evaluate the game and spot things when they are jumping and roaring."
Absolutely no doubt he's a vital cog in the wheel and IS the best strategist in the modern game, but there's more to their winning that PK. He is the conductor of the band no doubt but if you don't have the right band in place dosen't matter how good the conductor is. The Limerick machine is best in class right now until others are able to knock them off or they get old and there are no viable replacements

Eanna Burke's point for Thomas's the last day must be the greatest point ever scored in Croke Park to win an AI. What wrists and artistry to balance the ball and get the shot away while tight on the sideline especially given the weather conditions and what was at stake!

Thanks BG true indeed and points well made. Like every county, at different stages we surely cocked up big times when we were down. UNLIMITED HEARTBREAK could be regarded as a Manual on how a County Board should NOT do its business.

Yes indeed Tommy, probably as good a point as was ever scored under such pressure.

Galway should have a full panel again for the league at the beginning of February. Thomas' players back and Whelan back from Australia

Another goal for Declan McLaughlin in the Fitzgibbon against UCC yesterday in Mary I's win. He has had some start to the year with the hat trick in the Walsh Cup against Laois and was electric against Dublin last week. It will be as good as any inter county game if UL and UG meet in this year's competition. Two class teams.

Certainly wouldn't want to burn yourself out in January, with the real stuff happening in June/July these days.

Good to see Shefflin sticking with loads of experimentation for Sunday. First starts for David Concannon, McGlynn. Greg Thomas in the full forward line and Dan Loftus gets a start after keeping Eoin Cody quiet in the Fitzgibbon. Eoin Lawless at full back and Sean O'Hanlon moves up to wing forward after scoring 1-6 from play midweek for UL. Evan and Cianan probably have enough done now before the league so they are both back to the bench. Linnane and Morrissey making the bench for the first time this year.

Looking at the team I'd say only Eanna and Tom Monaghan would be assured of spots in the team for championship. Kevin Cooney is under pressure with McLoughlin in serious form and Grealish has fallen down the pecking order with too many defenders ahead of him. The rest look more like substitutes come the business end of the year. Will be interesting to see how they go.

Yeah a very different look to this team. I'm happy about it to. Get them out there and see what they got. Galway Abu.

Can't see many supporters making the 5 hour return trip from Galway to Carlow while the footballers play Mayo, live on TG4, in Pearse Stadium.

Think it's a relatively stronger team than ours. Reck is the only lad on our team who has been an automatic starter the last 2 years, and he was injured most of last year. Hopefully some of our lads put their hands up for selection for League teams. And some of the lads that have been on the team or panel for many seasons find some consistency to become automatic championship starters.

Who would you say is ahead of Grealish at right cornerback? Shane Morgan hasn't been proven at this level yet and TJ Brennan is more of a left cornerback or fullback.

Does anyone know if Johnny Glynn is part of the panel? He impressed for Ardrahan in most of their games in the club championship and is still one of the best Galway players to win a high ball and give an astute pass or take his own score.

I thought he was still in New York with the Football Team.

Agree with most of what the lad had to say. Except 2 things in particular. He was complaining about Galway only having 1 home game in the Walsh Cup this year. We only had 1 last year, and I had to travel from South Wexford to Mountrath and Birr for the other 2, both of which are far closer to East and South Galway than they are to here.
Also he said our best players like Dee and Lee are getting on in age, but they are younger than most of Galways best players. And the likes of Damien Reck and Rory O Connor are only in their mid 20s.

Morrissey will start there and then your other five are Daithi, Cianan, Fintan, Shane Cooney and Brennan. Padraic Mannion probably will have to go to midfield. That would leave out Grealish, Morgan, Dan Loftus, McInerney but there is just a lot of competition in that back six. Will get a good look at it in the Limerick league game with the Thomas' lads back in at that stage.
