Wonder who it is since its an an AI winning club has to be any of Castlegar, Kiltormer, Sarsfields, Athenry, Clairenbridge , Portumna or St Thomas

St Thomas are too smart for this stuff, Castlegar, Kiltormer, Portumna and Athenry too far back off the field. That leaves two cant see a country club like Sars doing this so my guess this "The Bridge""
Assuming it's not a hoax, but it's a sad state of affairs that we don't actually know if it is or is not from it's content. What I don't get is the, now not unusual, Irish thing of being ashamed of being yourself. Like alot of Europeans I've met blame us for many of the more nanny statish European rules and laws enacted over the last 20 odd years. And Irish people would tell themselves they don't like too many rules in life.
No professional sports have the same attitude to alcohol as some sections of the GAA. Agreed during the season lads shouldn't be binge drinking for days but there's no medical grounds, in terms of performance, for absolutely no alcohol. Why do lads that seem quick to impose drinking bans not ban smoking, which does actually have an impact on athletic performance? The no holidays thing? I mean WTAF?
The worst about it is the training targets etc, which are good things, are then made to look bad because of all the other **** added on to "the chain gang regime".
Then they wonder why more and more lads aren't sticking with the GAA when they become adults or aren't committing to intercounty.

Why does anyone care about all of this? It only affects the players on the panel. The outrage seems a bit over the top.

A lad making a living in Dublin is expected to come home for training every single week from January to whenever they get knocked out of the championship.
Whoever wrote these is not living in the real world!

If that charter is genuine then it's ridiculous. Management need to sit down with the players as a group and arrive at a charter together. I'm not a fan of charters because players are not employees and charters are quasi contracts. Players have to be given room to breathe and to live their lives.

If this charter is for real it will be interesting to see how many remain with the panel..are inter county players exempt or are they signing to?how can any manager force j1 students to sign up to this?am I right in saying a limerick man involved with management.

I have to say I agree with the outrage about this, I think if this nonsense that club players have to put up with is not called out as ridiculous then it will become the status quo. There's no doubt that the club game has become more serious over the last 10/15 years but these managers that write up these charters are on a power trip. Most probably have no experience of playing hurling/football themselves. Fair play to the whistleblower for leaking, most players wouldn't risk it in case they are suspended from the club.

Because its not just the players, it impacts more people like family, girlfriends and partners, education, friends (holidays, weddings, golf outings etc).
I'm all for getting the best out of your (amateur) players, but show me the scientific proof that these items improve performance or guarantee a championship rather than some wannabe manager pretending to bring in "tough love". Oh and no pressure on the players to raise the 15K needed to pay the manager and his staff their dues
NOTHING here about the mental state of players, how these "rules" impact their social integrations, friendships and mental well being, they are not robots, they are not paid, they are amateur sportsmen and women. When players get to a certain level of physical fitness, there is not much more you can do, increasing levels further is negligible and actually may have the opposite effect with injury. its time then to look at other areas like mental and social state, leadership, physical well being, visual and data analysis, tactical challenges, competitive edges versus teams, climate and diet, rather than focusing on a player having a glass of wine with their pasta. I'm sure there's some wanna be manager somewhere looking at this and saying this charter is a great idea and that's what we need to do to win.

I thought everyone knew that you can't win anything if you play golf after June.

Apart from a golf competition, I suppose.

That was the weirdest part of it all, for me.

When you have professional sportspeople able to go for a drink on their downtime/days off, if they wish, what the hell gives the management of an amateur team the right to impose 'drinking bans' anyway? Imagine if your employer tried to do that, trying to control what you do in your own time, you'd be out of that workplace rapidly.

It's insane. Surely alcohol is something you have to trust the individual with, as they are going to drink if they want to anyway, but why should they be shamed for it and/or have to do it in secret?

I'm willing to bet the majority of players drink very little during the season anyway, but that should be a choice they get to make for themselves. By all means discourage it, but 'banning' it just forces it underground and is counterproductive.

100% agree and believe me you will know if a person binge drinks for up to 4-5 days after the event as it takes a while for the body to rehydrate and rejuvenate especially if you are not used to drinking excessively. Nothing here on mental state and preparedness which to me is equally as important.

In response to Pope Benedict, i didnt blame mmgt for not making changes. What was happening on field wasn't working. Daithi laid on winning goal against Loughrea a few years ago. He was brought down when he went up the field. Fergal M scored a goal last year if I am not mistaken. Yes Turlough are short of forwards but to try something different would have been worth a shot. Best of luck to St Thomas's in the all Ireland club semi.

Because it highlights what unrealistic expectations are being put on young people who want to play GAA at a high level for their club not even county.Young people being excluded from playing at the highest level for their club because they want to go abroad to experience something different for a few weeks during the Summer is just ridiculous. These lads and girls normally find a club to train with when they are gone anyway.Ok you can say you will be a sub on panel for while when you get back but to exclude them entirely???

Doesn't appear to be an issue in Corofin -they had at least 3 lads who went to America and one of them is starting and two are subs on their current senior team. As a club they appear to take the view fight for your place when you come back but if you've looked after your self while away and preform in training /matches/intermediate matches when you come back then you are in the reckoning to be part of the senior panel and possbily play.

Good points. Hard to imagine anyone BINGE DRINKING and being able to keep up with all the very fit lads in the GAA in any code. It would be very obvious in a short time on the pitch.

Seniors playing Cork in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Saturday. Will be the first look at some of the new lads looking to get into the squad for Walsh Cup and league campaigns.

Thomas" way too big at 9/2 to beat Ballygunner. Ballygunner were playing against nothing in the Munster final, this game will at least be a fair step up from that game surely.

Ballygunners in house games would be as good as prep as anything, with their intermediate team essentially a senior team. Same as Kilcormac Killoughley, what an incredible luxury to have in prep for championship games.

I think you might also be forgetting the long layoff St Thomas' have had since the Co Final, and their history in All Ireland semi finals.

Wishing them the best of luck as Galway representatives but 9/2 is a fair price if you ask me.

Ballygunner OLG final for me. The individual battles in that one would be worthy of an all ireland final date.

Thomas' will do well to keep it within 10 points. No knock on them, but Ballygunner are an excellent side

It waa probably the lowest quality Galway county final in years though so Thomas's would want to step up a lot on that performance themselves if they are to make a game of it against Ballygunner.
