I think thats slightly harsh. They beat both Kinvara and Ballindereen with a few points to spare over the last few years and pushed what turned out to be a good Oranmore team all the way also - and playing much of the game with 13 men. Only for Niall Burke they could have nearly won with 13 as well. They're a strong team and I'd have them as favourites against Moycullen.

Kinvara and Ballinderreen have subsequently been relegated from Senior B since as well. Toreen are a decent side but they'd probably float between Intermediate and Senior B too. There's about 4/5 intermediate standard teams in Senior B and there wouldn't be much difference between them and say top 2/3 in intermediate. Too many teams in Senior in Galway as was the case in Tipp, glad to see both have to cut down to 16

They will take Moycullen with ease IF they get over London champs

Ahascragh had to play the day after the county final as well and won the replay 2-20 to 13 points. It's more to do with the fact that any good team in Galway is now a senior club. The standard of intermediate is akin to junior A 10 years ago. Senior championship is swelled with so many average Senior teams. Restructuring will actually produce a good intermediate championship again.

Does anyone know anything about the london team or the standard there, when i posted about Toreen winning Connacht i discounted the londoners. I agree 100% the fact that second team's have won the last few junior a finals and are very competitive at intermediate say it all

A lot of it will depend on how seriously Moycullen take it. They will have to take it seriously to win but the big prize has been won already and motivation might not be what it could be. I doubt there would be many broken hearts in Moycullen if they were to lose to Tooreen or Robert Emmetts tbf Stool Pigeon (Galway) - Posts: 822 - 03/12/2021 19:25:41 2391580 Link 0 |
If they are to reduce the Senior teams why not let the 4 divisional teams enter the Senior Championship at the Preliminary Quarter Final Stage. The Divisional teams would be made up of Intermediate and Junior Clubs in their region. katser (Galway) - Posts: 2188 - 04/12/2021 08:52:04 2391594 Link 1 |

That East Galway team would absolutely walk a Senior Championship.

I think Clarinbridge have a great chance today in the county final. The fact that they won 2 of their recent championship games in atrocious weather conditions suggests to me that they have found that grit and "dog" in them that they seemed to lack in recent years. They are an outfit brimming with talent but seem to have matured this year into a really good team. I will be not at all surprised if they win it. I agree with you. Though St Thomas's deserve the right to be favorites, Clarenbridge will surely bring it today.

I was quite disappointed with Clarinbridge today. They didnt have the "dog" or the grit in them that I hoped they had developed. They were physically dominated and lost every "scrum" to St. Thomas's and lost far too many of their own puckouts., which led sometimes to some easy scores. But they are a young team and coming from Senior B meant they'd have had to raise their level of performance today a few notches more than they are used to doing. They have time on their side and maybe can put the learnings from today to good use next year. Great congratulations to St Thomas's on their brilliant achievement. For such a small club with limited resources to win 4 in a row is something else. PoolSturgeon (Galway) - Posts: 1898 - 05/12/2021 20:17:09 2391786 Link 1 |
A massive achievement for St Thomas. They've had a golden generation of players over the past 10 years, but more importantly they've capitalised on it. 6 wins from 6 finals is great going. Even though I'd generally support an underdog, St Thomas being a small club, you couldn't begrudge them any title. Clarinbridge are a coming force, if their underage success is anything to go by. They have a young team and should gain valuable experience from today. I wouldn't blame them for losing out in the physical stakes today. They're a much lighter and younger team than St Thomas. On a December pitch, it was always going to be a more physical contest. The best of luck to St Thomas for the rest of their campaign.
