Replying To Dermot_Desmond_96:  "Well, last weekend and last years league games to my mind. And lets call a spade a spade, Cork should have won in Thurles last summer so......"
We should have won in '86 & '90 but didn't, fat lot of good that notion is. Last summer was revenge a little for these, and, don't forget, Cork weren't good enough to lead us at any stage during that match. (Like KK in the AI final v. Limerick.)

Replying To tommy k:  "On a more positive note Martin McManus was Galway's MOTM with 1-3 and did very well in his first competitive start outside of the Walsh Cup. Kevin Cooney did well in parts but needs to be stronger and more controlled when in possession. Liam Collins is very talented and with a bit more S&C to break tackles etc will be very effective going forward."
Caught some ball, used it well, assisted Cooney's goal and also nearly played him in for another.

Early days but a great debut.

I always have a little smile when I start reading the thread after a couple of league matches. I hope most people that follow the thread know that the league is used to try a few new players and game time for regular players who are coming from weaker club teams. The league will not get interesting until the later end but will be a long way off championship pace. Just think back to Pearse Stadium last year when Galway beat Kilkenny(Kilkenny were shocking on the day). Galway supporters thought the All Ireland was theirs(lol). Galway have plenty of choice from number 1 to 7 but from 8-15 to many players tried and tested and unfortunately not up to it on the BIG day. Honestly.. will be lucky to reach an All Ireland semi final this year. Look forward to the replies.

I didn't meet any supporter last year who thought the All-Ireland was ours. No idea what you're talking about. As supporters, we'd rarely be confident in general given our history.
Limerick were the hot favourites for the All-Ireland last year and beating Kilkenny wasn't going to prove much either way regarding our ability to test Limerick.
As it happens we gave Limerick a very good challenge in the semi-final (better than I expected) and could have snuck the result only for some wasteful shooting.
We'll see where we're at this year once the championship throws in.

On the contrary, I'd say Galway have more choice from no. 8 upwards. Need to bed in a new no. 6 unless Joe Cooney is going to be placed there.

10 minutes into the semi final last year, I thought we would run away with it. Gillane especially was on fire and scoring for fun..

On the 70th minute I could barely watch. Galway were excellent for much of the match and could have won it but for some terrible shooting.

In the end Our bench won it for us.
Lynch coming on brought a bit of panic to Galway, he was double marked leaving space for Reidy who is very accurate from open play. That was the difference between us in the end..

If Galway play to the same standard as you showed that day, with a bit more accuracy then you'll be very close.
No one in Limerick would discount your chances or begrudge you if you beat us..

Great win for University Galway last night over UCC in extra time to get to the Fitzgibbon final. Niland scored some monster frees but I thought Tiernan Killeen was outstanding. His first touch and use of the ball is lovely and there just has to be a spot for him in the county half back line. Sets them up for another go at UL on Saturday who will be tough to beat.

UCG are a fantastic team and with Galway RTC also did very well in the Fitz Cup this year.........both 3rd level Collages are riddled with young Galway talent which is great for the future.

Just a small correction - they are now called UG. It was UCG in my time there in the 80''s, then in the 90's they changed it to NUIG and now UG. Hopefully that will be the last change of name for a while as I can't keep up with it! lol

I know they have changed both Collages names over and over, but I just acknowledge them as UCG and Galway RTC..... sounds nicer with "Galway " in the name, after all Galway is where these Collages have always been located.
Best of luck to UCG in the Final hope they hammer "that crowd"!!

I never got over UCG. I still call them that and get corrected by friends of mine that went there all the time.

Yes and they are a much bigger, more physical team than UCG (just for katser there!) so lets hope its not a case of " a good big one always beats a good little one"!

My hope was in vain I'm afraid - easily beaten but of course UL have the pick of a lot of counties e.g. Galway, Limerick, Tipp, KK, Cork, Clare and Waterford whereas UG were all Galway apart from one from Clare in the starting 15. In my time UCG had a much wider spread of players from other counties and NIHE Limerick (as they were known) were not taken very seriously as Fitzgibbon Cup challengers by the likes of UCC and UCD anyway. How times have changed.

Sure UG have fellas from Roscommon, Sligo, Leitrim, Mayo and even down from Donegal attending, so you can't really claim that UL has more counties to pick from!

Anyway, fine display by UL and Mikey Kiely for a fine biteen of a tressing for Galway +1. Long may Limerick success continue!

More Galway players played for UL today than Limerick lads.
Fair play to all involved with UL. They're a mighty team. Mikey Kiely showed a great eye for goal in last year's competition and he continued it this year. He was ruthless from the start and the game was over as a contest early on.

Indeed, and Galway have always had a healthy representation on UL teams, so it's kind of surprising that some folk on here see UL as being anti-Galway and love to see them being bate! Same in the Sigerson, more Galway players on the UL team than Limerick players (one only).

Since when did the counties you mentioned produce top class senior intercounty hurlers? I am talking about hurling counties and as someone mentioned earlier there were more Galway players on the UL team than Limerick had!
